Mason Henson stood next to the closet door and frowned. From inside, he could hear deep sobs. For a second, Henson felt a bit of remorse for the child behind the door. After all, he was just a six-year old kid. He rubbed his chin where the boy had clipped him with his sneaker. ‘A feisty kid at that!’ Henson glanced at his watch, then back at the closet door. ‘Let Conley take care of his own dirty work,’ the thug sneered. ‘The kid’ll probably die in that closet before anyone finds him.’ The man left in the brown sedan he’d rented when he came to town; glad that Conley decided to walk the short distance to meet Hardy. He glanced once at the secluded bungalow in his rearview mirror before driving away. * * * Fenton Hardy parked his car in the small lot just off highway 19. As he exited his vehicle, he couldn’t help but wonder about the location. He made his way to the picnic area at the park. ‘David Conley doesn’t know Bayport,’ Fenton speculated, ‘so how did he know about this obscure little park?’ Other than moonlight, the place was dark and covered in shadows. ‘Is that why you picked it, Conley?’ the detective pondered. ‘No,’ Fenton shook his head. ‘He’s close by; I can feel it!’ He glanced around at the surrounding trees, but saw no sign of his partner, his father or the police. “I hope you guys are picking up my voice loud and clear,” the young detective whispered. He was wearing a hidden microphone under his shirt. “I think Conley has Joe stashed somewhere close by. It’s the only way he could know about this isolated park.” Sam Radley was behind a cluster of evergreen bushes and saw Fenton enter the park. Seconds later, Sam was joined by Officer Wesley Greene. “Mr. Radley? The Chief said to tell you that Mr. Hardy thinks his boy might be hidden nearby,” Greene informed the young detective. Sam smiled, “That’s why Mr. Hardy is going to be a great detective someday, Greene – the man is always thinking!” * * * Frank Hardy didn’t really want to disobey his Uncle Sam, but he couldn’t help Joe if he was stuck in the car. The seven-year-old slipped out of the vehicle as soon as he was sure Sam Radley was gone. Frank moved into the woods where he’d seen Sam heading moments earlier. When he saw Sam, Frank crawled silently within a few feet of his father’s partner. He stayed out of sight, but kept his eyes and ears open. When he heard the police officer tell Sam that Joe was probably nearby, Frank smiled and snuck away as silently as he had come. “I’ll check every house on this road,” Frank stated, boldly. “The bad guys must have Joe in one of them.” He decided that as soon as he found the right place, he could run back to the park and get Uncle Sam and the police. * * * After calling Conner Bailey and George Wayne to confirm his story, Officer Con Riley finally believed that Jack Wayne had nothing to do with Joe’s kidnapping. “Exactly where did your dog find the backpack, Jack?” Con questioned. “Along highway 19,” the teenager answered. “There are several places you can pull over and have picnics up there. “Scout and I were near ‘Tucker’s Trail’ when Scout found Joe’s bag.” Gertrude Hardy had been listening from the doorway, and suddenly frowned. “Isn’t the rendezvous with the kidnapper supposed to take place near there?” Officer Riley’s eyes grew wide as realization dawned on him. “You’re right, Miss Hardy! ‘Tucker’s Trail’ is just up the road from ‘Cliff Side Park’. “I’m going to radio the Chief!” * * * Esther Hardy wearily made her way up the stairs of her son’s house. She was grateful that Fenton and Laura had the big house now. Her little house was a single story – no more stairs to climb! She made her way down the hall to the room of her grandson. Laura was understandably preoccupied, so she decided to check on Frankie. Esther opened the door and peered into the room. Unlike Joe, Frank never needed a night light, so the room was very dark. She made her way to the edge of the bed and frowned. The comforter and sheets were rumpled and pushed back. Frank had obviously been in bed at some point, but where was he now? The woman looked at the closed door that led to the bathroom between the boys’ rooms. She knocked softly before turning the knob. For Joe’s sake, a night light kept the small bathroom fairly bright, and it was easy to see that Frank was not there. ‘Joey’s room,’ Esther decided. ‘Frankie’s missing his brother. He’s probably snuggled up in Joey’s bed.’ She went through the bathroom to the door that led into Joe’s room. As she looked at Joe’s empty bed, Esther was beginning to worry. Where in the world could Frankie be? * * * David Conley was confident as he made his way through the pine woods toward ‘Cliff Side Park’. He knew it was a risk meeting Hardy so close to where his kid was stashed, but he had neither the time nor the desire to search out a better location. Conley proceeded toward the rendezvous point with extreme caution.
