Franklin Hardy picked up his speed at the sound of a child’s terrified cry. He knew in his heart it was his little grandson. ‘I’m coming Joey!’ the elder Hardy thought as he raced toward the house he saw ahead. * * * David Conley grinned as he saw the two small boys in front of him. When the blond child looked at him and screamed, Conley pulled a small gun out from his belt and pointed it at the children. “Get inside,” he said coldly, enjoying the fear he saw in their eyes. The dark-haired child, obviously Hardy’s older kid, put his arm around the smaller boy and led the way into the house. After he had the boys in the house, he had them sit at the table. Conley called for Henson. When there was no response, he realized Henson had taken off early. Conley sat near the door, watching the boys carefully. The little one bore bruises on his face and kept cradling his left arm. The older one kept talking in soft whispers to his brother, often stroking the younger child’s hair or patting his knee. ‘As long as I have the little blond kid, the dark-haired kid will do whatever I want,’ Conley surmised. ‘This could all turn out okay, yet!’ * * * Fenton Hardy and Sam Radley had gone almost a mile when they saw the small road that turned into the pine woods towards the cliffs. “Keep going or check out the lane?” Sam asked, slowing the car. “It can’t be very long,” Fenton stated. “Let’s check it out quickly.” Sam turned onto the little road with two police cruisers not far behind him. * * * Officer Sherman Cobb received a radio call from Con Riley about Frank Hardy missing. The young officer immediately called Chief Ezra Collig’s radio with the information. He also informed the chief about Captain Franklin Hardy’s absence. “Great,” Collig muttered to himself as he turned his patrol car onto a small road behind Sam Radley’s sedan. “Now I’ve got two missing kids, a rouge officer and a runaway crook. What’s next?” * * * Captain Franklin Hardy raced around the corner of the old house just as David Conley ushered Franklin’s two grandsons inside at gunpoint. ‘Frankie? How in the world did Conley get Frankie, too?’ Franklin pondered, gritting his teeth in anger toward the kidnapper. Gripping tightly to his police issued revolver, the veteran officer silently made his way back to the front of the house. He started up the front steps. Franklin turned at the sound of tires on the gravel road. A blue sedan pulled to a stop. He watched as his son Fenton, and Sam Radley immerged from the vehicle. Franklin waved for both of the young men to stop and he quickly joined them. He’d no sooner reached Fenton and Sam, when two police cruisers pulled up behind Sam’s car. “Get those cars outta sight!” Franklin commanded, glancing back at the dark house. “If he sees them, he might hurt the kids!” Chief Ezra Collig got out of his car and sent it back down the road with Officer Greene. Collig joined Sam and the two Hardy men. Franklin quickly filled them in on the present situation. Fenton Hardy sighed in frustration. Now Conley had both his children captive. He glanced at Sam, knowing his partner was feeling guilty about leaving Frank in the car alone. Sam felt sick. He should have taken little Frank home as soon as he was discovered. ‘Stupid, Radley.’ He silently admonished himself. “At least we know where Frank is, now,” Collig said, breaking Sam’s train of thought. “Riley called from the house. They know Frank is missing.” “We can’t tell them where Frank is right now,” Fenton added instantly. “Agreed,” Franklin nodded. “Then let’s get those kids away from Conley and home where they belong!” Ezra stated. “Let me get my boys in position around the house,” the police chief ordered. “You three stay put, but keep your eyes on that house.” Collig had barely moved down the road when David Conley opened the front door of the old bungalow. “Fenton Hardy!” the smuggling kidnapper called out, “I’ve got your two brats here!” A child’s scream came from just beyond the door as Conley pulled Joe in front of him, putting his gun to the child’s head. Fenton clenched his fists in fury. ‘I’ll kill him with my bare hands for what he’s putting my boys through,’ the young detective silently vowed. Franklin sensed Fenton’s rage and put a restraining hand on the younger man’s arm. “If you go charging at him,” Franklin whispered, “he’ll kill Joey for sure.” Fenton barely nodded. He stepped out in front of the car and faced Conley. “Let the children go and I can still get you that money and a flight out of the country.” Conley laughed, “Do you think I’m stupid? The airport will be crawling with cops by now! “I call all the shots from this point, Hardy!” the large man shouted, still gripping Joe tightly. “See, I figure, as long as I got a hostage, I’ll get away quite easily. “Problem is,” Conley continued, “now I got one hostage too many.” He looked down at the sobbing child in front of him. “This one’s been way too noisy, anyhow.” Conley gazed in Fenton’s direction and smiled, his teeth glowing brightly in the moonlight. Fenton heard the click of the gun as Conley cocked the hammer.
