Frank Hardy couldn’t help but smile as he slipped his wrist free from the tape that Conley had secured him with minutes earlier.   He looked up at Conley as the man peeked out the door.  Frank was angry that the man had taped up Joe, too.

Joe sat sobbing softly beside Frank.  The bad man had pulled his arms behind him and the pain in his shoulder had almost made him pass out.

“Its gonna be okay, Joe,” Frank whispered softly.  “I got my hands loose.  I’ll get you loose, too.  We’ll sneak out the back while he’s yelling at Daddy.”

Before Frank could utter another word, Conley reached down and grabbed Joe, pulling the smaller boy to his feet.

“No! Leave him…” Frank started to rise but fell unconscious as Conley’s shoe made contact with the boy’s left temple.

After calming Fenton, Franklin slipped into the dark shadows away from his son and Sam.  He didn’t trust Conley and he was afraid that Fenton’s natural impulsiveness would over-ride his common sense if someone didn’t act fast.

Franklin suspected that Chief Collig had his fellow officers moving in toward the back of the house, but he doubted they would reach Joey in time if Conley decided to shoot that gun he was holding against the boy’s head.

He also knew that Frankie was probably right inside the door as well.  He could be injured or killed if guns started going off inside or around the house.

Franklin stayed beyond David Conley’s peripheral vision and moved up close to the house.  He saw Officer Wesley Greene and Officer Gary Coffey follow his lead.

Meanwhile, Chief Collig and Officer Donnie Wheeler had made their way into the kitchen of the old house.  They could hear Conley’s threatening voice coming from the front room.

“Must have the Hardy boys in there with him,” Collig whispered.  Wheeler nodded, understanding what Chief Collig wasn’t saying; those two little boys were in serious jeopardy if Conley saw or heard them approaching.

Seconds later, all caution was thrown to the wind and total pandemonium broke out inside and around the little bungalow on the cliffs above Barmet Bay.

* * *

Frank Hardy’s head hurt as he opened his dark brown eyes.  He could see Conley’s back and he could see his baby brother standing in front of the man.  Frank forced himself up into a sitting position.

Tugging on his arm, he pulled both loosened wrists free.  He was sore and tired, but he was angry at this man for hurting Joe.  With a silent growl, Frank Hardy leaped at David Conley’s back.

* * *

Franklin perceived the slight movement inside the house behind Conley.  The timing would have to be perfect or Joey would die.  Taking a deep breath, Franklin Hardy sprang from his hiding place beside the porch and launched himself at Conley.

* * *

Fenton Hardy and Sam Radley watched in shocked silence as Franklin dove at Conley.  They heard the gun explode and both men knew that the little tow-headed boy, the precious youngest member of the Hardy family, was probably dead.  Both ran toward the porch, silently praying that they were wrong.

Frank hung onto Conley's neck like a tiger; his small arms wrapped around the kidnapper’s throat, choking the man.  Conley stumbled forward, grabbing at the vise around his throat. Suddenly, he was falling through the rusted porch rail and carrying Frank with him to the ground.

“Frank!” Sam called, drawing his semi-automatic pistol and pointing it at Conley’s chest.  “Frank!  Let go, honey.  I’ve got the bad guy now.”

Frank looked at Sam, tears running down his face.  “He hurt Joe.”

“Not anymore,” Sam replied, nearly choking on his own words.

Ezra Collig came up behind Conley and gently pulled Frank away while Wheeler cuffed the man and read him his rights.

Sam scooped Frank into his arms and the dark-haired child hugged his neck.

Fenton stared at the two still forms on the porch.  His father was lying on his side, gently cradling Joe in his arms.  Fenton’s heart beat rapidly as he approached the pair.

His entire body was flooded with relief as he heard Joe’s soft sobbing and his father’s soothing voice comforting the child.

Fenton knelt beside his father.  “You have no right to ever call me the impulsive one,” he chuckled, patting his father’s shoulder.  “That was one of the stupidest, hair-brained, idiotic…sigh…bravest things I’ve ever seen.”

“Help…your…boy,” Franklin said, his voice laced with pain.  Fenton froze.  He gently turned his father onto his back.

“Dad?”

“Get…Joey,” Franklin repeated, and then he slipped into unconsciousness.

Laura Hardy sat up, her eyes wide with fear.  Ethel Radley quickly moved to the sofa where her friend had been sleeping just moments before.

As soon as Laura found out Frank was missing, she had panicked.  Gertrude gave her sister-in-law a sleeping pill and had her lie down on the living room sofa.  Ethel stayed with Laura as she slept.

“Laura, honey?” Ethel gently took her friend’s hand.  “What is it?  What’s wrong?”

Laura’s blue eyes locked onto Ethel’s hazel ones.  “I want my babies, Eth.  They need me, I can feel it.”

Ethel pulled Laura into a comforting embrace.  Ethel had once told Laura that she had always wished she’d had an older sister.  Ever since then, Laura had made an extra effort to be a “big” sister to her friend, offering advice, comfort and companionship.  ‘Now,’ Ethel thought, ‘I can pay her back for all that kindness; at least, I can try.’
