Epilogue: …“I can’t give this to Joe.” Jack’s face fell and he sighed, feeling foolish. He shouldn’t have come. It was a stupid idea. Fenton reached out and put a hand on the teenager’s shoulder. “Jack, I want you to meet Joe and give it to him.” Jack looked up and his face broke into a wide grin. Fenton and Franklin chuckled and led the young man into the house. THE END
Well, I’m glad that’s done. What’da you think? Can I get an “A”? Now all I have to do is turn it in and hope for the best. But it is spring and, like Nana always said, ‘With spring, comes hope.’ My family stayed in touch with Uncle Owen after that and we see them a couple times a year. Monica is in college now near Albany, New York. That’s only a few hours away from us, so she’s come down to visit a few times. My Pap went back to work on the police force about nine months after this story took place. Nana won the first round with her battle against cancer. Unfortunately, it came back with a vengeance three years later. She died two weeks after my tenth birthday. Pap worked a lot of hours after that, just trying to stay busy, but he changed. Oh, we still had a few good times with him, but he kept more and more to himself. Pap had a heart-attack and died when I was eleven. I remember Dad saying that Pap died of a broken heart. That’s probably true. I think he just missed Nana too much; he quit living so he could be with her again. Sam Radley still works with Dad, and he and Ethel are great friends of ours, though I stopped calling them “aunt” and “uncle” a long time ago! They never had kids of their own so, I guess they’ve sort of ‘adopted’ Frank and me. They buy us birthday and Christmas gifts, stuff like that. Jack Wayne has remained a true friend of the family, too. He helped Dad get his pilot’s license, and then later, he taught Frank to fly. He’s tried to teach me, and while I could probably fly a plane in a real emergency, I don’t really like flying in small planes and have yet to get my license. That ‘Batman’ backpack Jack bought me? I kept it ‘til it literally fell apart. What? You want to know about Jack being born in his father’s plane? Well, it’s true, that I know; but you’ll have to ask Jack about that story. He loves to tell it! -Joe Hardy
