Frank and Joe didn’t understand what was happening.  All of a sudden, the grown-ups seemed upset.  Pap Pap was pacing the floor while their dad talked to him.  Their mom and Aunt Gertrude were sitting in the living room with Nana, and they were all crying.

The boys were scared.  They sensed that something was wrong.  They also knew they were hungry and it didn’t look like they were going to get anything to eat anytime soon.

Tentatively, Frank tugged on his father’s pant leg.  Fenton stared down into his seven-year-old’s face.  His heart broke as he saw the concern in the child’s eyes.  He quickly glanced behind Frank.  Joe was standing near the door, chewing nervously on the end of his thumb.  His blue eyes were brimming with tears.

Fenton knelt onto one knee. “Come here, boys.”  Frank and Joe both raced into their father’s secure arms.

“Its okay, guys,” Fenton said softly, kissing the tops of both their heads. “Let’s go for a little ride.”  Not understanding, but fully trusting their dad, the boys put on their jackets and went out to the car.

“I’ll be right there,” the thirty-six year old man called after his sons.  He looked at his father and explained that he needed to have a talk with the two children.

Fenton stopped on his way out to give the women a brief explanation as well. He then joined his boys in the station wagon.

“A-a-are we in t-t-trouble?” Joe asked from his booster seat as Fenton entered the car.  Frank sucked on his lower lip and looked anxiously at his father, too.

Fenton turned in his seat so he was facing the boys.  “No, baby.  You two are not in trouble at all.”  He saw both boys visibly relax.  Fenton smiled and turned back around.

“You don’t know your Uncle Owen at all, but he’s my little brother,” Fenton began, backing the car out of the driveway.

“L-like I’m F-Frank’s little brother?” Joe questioned.

“Yup,” replied Mr. Hardy, “just like you and Frank.  Only, Owen is a grown-up now, just like Daddy.  He has a wife and a little girl named Monica. She’s a few years older than Frank.”

Frank’s brow wrinkled in concentration. “That makes her our cousin, right?”

“That’s right Frank,” Fenton smiled proudly.  “That was Uncle Owen that called Pap Pap just a while ago.  He told him some sad news.  That’s why Pap Pap and Nana are so upset.”

Fenton pulled the car into the parking lot of a fast food restaurant.  He got out and helped the boys out of the car.  The trio entered the building and quickly placed their orders.  Soon they were sitting in a booth munching on burgers and French fries.

Fenton debated about how much to tell the boys, but he believed in being honest, even with the children.  He waited until they were both about finished before he told them about Monica.

“Frank, do you remember a couple years ago when we first moved to Bayport, a bad man took Joe away from us for a few days?*” Fenton gently asked.

“I remember Joe was gone and I missed him. Mommy was really sad and the police were at our house a lot,” Frank replied.

Fenton looked carefully at his younger son.  He knew Joe didn’t remember being kidnapped when he was four.  The youngster sat still, his blue eyes wide.  Fenton called Joe’s name and patted his own leg.  Joe grinned and quickly climbed on his father’s lap.

“A lot of people helped us get Joe home, and the bad man can’t hurt anyone again,” Mr. Hardy continued. “Uncle Owen told Pap Pap that bad men took Monica away.”

“Are you and Pap Pap going to go and help find her?” Frank asked.

“Yes, son,” Fenton replied, “I think we are.”

“Then everything will be okay ‘cause you and Pap Pap are the bestest bad guy busters in the world,” Frank smiled.

“Yeah!” Joe joined in, looking up into his father’s handsome face, “Bad guy busters!”

Fenton smiled at their enthusiasm and unwavering faith.  Yet he knew his brother’s daughter was in a very serious situation.

What he hadn’t told his sons was why Monica was missing.  Owen had borrowed money from the wrong people, and now they wanted paid back - in full.

* * *

Owen Hardy had only called his father out of pure desperation.  He stayed in touch with his family as little as possible.

He had spent most of his rebellious teenage years knowing he was a great disappointment to his family.  How could the son of a cop be such a despicable person? He hung out with the wrong crowd and developed a reputation as the ‘bad Hardy kid.’ He didn’t deserve his family and at the first opportunity, he left home for good.

He’d moved to Canada and got a job with the Dubois Packaging Company.  He met Camille Le Brié the second day on the job.  She was working as a secretary for the company.

Owen was immediately attracted to the dark-haired beauty and soon they began dating.  Two years later, they were married and living in a tiny apartment in Perry Shore, Ontario.

Things started out fine and they were happy.  When Monica was born, Owen was thrilled, but suddenly money was short.  Bills began piling up.

Frustrated at his inability to make ends meet, Owen started drinking and gambling.  To supplement his income, he started doing under-the-table deliveries.  He knew the packages he delivered probably contained drugs, but he’d convinced himself that it was all for Camille and Monica.
