PAST...

Laura Hardy drove the car to the gas station. She knew that Sam Radley and several other police officers were nearby, and that Fenton was in his car listening by radio, several blocks away, but she was still nervous. She pulled up at the edge of the gas station, near the corner.

The telephone in the public phone booth rang and Laura jumped. Should she answer it? Thinking it was the kidnapper, she jumped out of her car and picked up the phone.

"Hello?" Mrs. Hardy said.

"Do you want your son to die?" hissed a muffled voice into her ear.

"No! Oh God Please!" Laura begged the disguised voice.

"I told you, no police!" the voice growled, "You disobeyed! There are police all over! Didn’t you think I’d recognize your husband’s partner?"

"I’m sorry! Please don’t hurt Joey!" Laura cried, gripping the mouthpiece, "I’m begging you! Please let me have my baby!"

"Listen carefully," the voice whispered, "Go into the service station. There is a back exit. Go out that door and get into the back seat of the blue Chevy that’s parked there. Keep low so your police friends won’t see you." The line clicked dead. Laura walked up to her own car and spoke loudly enough for the watching police to hear through the radio transmitter that was hidden in her car.

"He knows you guys are out there. He won’t release Joey," Laura tried to remain calm, "I’m going inside to use the ladies room, then we’ll go back to the house and wait for him to contact us again." With resolve, Laura walked into the station. She quickly found the exit door to the back. When Mrs. Hardy stepped outside, someone grabbed her from behind.

"It’s okay, it’s only me," Adam said into her ear.

"Why are you here?" Laura said, worried that he would blow her chance to find Joey.

"I think I know where your son is," Adam grinned, "Come on, I’ll take you there." He took Laura’s hand and pulled her away from the Chevy and into his own maroon Buick.

~ ~ ~ PRESENT...

By evening, Joe Hardy’s shoulder pain had dulled to a steady throbbing. Red had vanished again, shortly after he wrapped Joe’s shoulder with gauze.

Joe couldn’t make any sense of what was going on. How was his mother involved? What did Red mean when he said Joe had ‘been so little then’? When?

The door of the room opened and Joe watched Red walk in with another shopping bag. Joe felt his stomach muscles tighten, wondering what kind of surprises Red had hidden inside the bag.

The man moved to the side of the bed and carefully checked Joe’s shoulder. "You’re probably getting a little stiff being in the same position for so long," Red stated, noting that the bleeding had stopped. "I’ll put a fresh dressing on this shoulder, then I’ll untie your arms."

Joe gritted his teeth as Red re-bandaged the wound. When he untied Joe; the muscles in Joe’s back, arms and shoulders screamed in protest. Joe slowly moved about on the bed, trying to work out some of the stiffness without hurting his wounded shoulder.

Red Reed watched the youth with amused interest. The kid had spunk and Red knew if given a chance, Joe would try to escape in an instant. However, keeping him tied to the bed wasn’t feasible either. He’d have to come up with a better arrangement. Maybe he should take Joe to the cave.

"You hungry, Joe?" Red asked, reaching for the bag he’d brought in with him. "I figured you would be by now." He glanced at the boy, expecting a response.

"Cat got your tongue?" Red grinned.

"When are you going to tell me what this is all about?" Joe asked, his voice still hoarse from his earlier yelling.

"This is about revenge. It’s about broken hearts. It’s about a woman who was careless with someone else’s feelings," the man replied.

"I don’t understand, Red," Joe said, shaking his head, "Is the woman you’re talking about my mother?" He didn’t answer. Instead, Red just smiled and handed Joe a fast-food burger.

"I think you should know," Red said after a long pause, "Yes, the woman in question is your mother, Laura Daniels Hardy. You should also know I’m not Walter Reed at all."

Red walked up to Joe and looked him in the eyes. "My name is really Andrew. Andrew Whiteside. Your mother killed my baby brother, Adam."
