–PAST...
"Adam, how could you know where Joey is?" Laura Hardy asked, afraid that she may have just lost her one chance to save her son. "When I left your place," Adam Whiteside replied with a smile, "I decided to look around out here by that gas station. I saw a guy moving around the back of the station that didn’t look like he belonged there." "He was driving that blue Chevy," Adam continued, "So I followed him. He went into a little cave not far from here on Shore Road, but then he went back and parked the car behind the gas station. I have a hunch that your son might be in that cave." "Adam! We should have told the police and Fenton!" Laura exclaimed. "I thought finding Joey was the most important thing here!" Adam replied, suddenly angry, "but no! We have to tell Fenton! We have to tell Fenton!" Laura was both shocked and frightened by Adam’s sudden change in attitude. She suddenly had a horrible thought that somehow Adam was involved in Joey’s disappearance. * * * "What do you mean, ‘you lost her’?" Fenton Hardy screamed at the officers and Sam Radley. "Fent," Sam said calmly, "The station attendant saw her leave in a maroon sedan. If we hustle, we might still catch them." Fenton looked at Sam with frantic eyes and saw that Sam was right. He feebly nodded and allowed Sam to lead him to his car. They pulled out in pursuit of the other car, followed by two police cars. ~ ~ ~ PRESENT... "I’m thinking about moving you," Andrew Whiteside said, rubbing his chin, "You’ll get too cramped tied up all the time, but I can’t give you any opportunity of escape, either." Joe Hardy didn’t know if Red, or rather, Andrew was talking to him or to himself. He’d finished eating and his captor had retied him to a chair instead of the bed. "What do you plan to do with me?" Joe asked, his voice still scratchy, "Am I just a lure to get at my mother?" "You’re a lure," Andrew stated, looking over at the blond youth, "and when your mother comes, she’ll suffer the pain of loss that death brings." "You’re going kill me to hurt her," Joe said, not wanting to believe what the man was implying. "Why? I mean, if you’re going to kill me anyway, shouldn’t I know why? My Mom’s no killer. She couldn’t have killed your brother." Andrew stared at Joe for a long time before answering. "Yes, I think you should hear the whole story," Andrew replied, "But I want your mother to tell you." Andrew released Joe from the chair, let him use the bathroom and then bound him again to the bed, keeping his knife within reach so Joe wouldn’t try to escape. He began taping Joe’s mouth again when Joe spoke up. "Why are you taping my mouth if no one’s around? It’s hard to breath with that tape over my mouth," Joe said. Andrew considered this a minute, but then proceeded to tape his mouth anyway. "No one is around, but you never know when someone could wander close," the man smiled, "I can’t take a chance like that." "Be good, Joe," Whiteside grinned, "I’m going to deliver a little present to your mommy. When I come back, we’ll call her again." * * * "We know that Adam Whiteside is dead, so this has to be someone who knew him and knew about Joe being kidnapped when he was four," Collig stated, reviewing the facts. "We need to find out if Adam had any family that might be trying to avenge him," Fenton added, looking at each of the men who sat at his table. Frank, the youngest one present, looked older than his 18 years. Fenton knew he was closer to Joe than most siblings ever dream of being. Joe’s kidnapping was tearing Frank up, but the teenager was trying hard to put up a strong front. Sam Radley and officer Con Riley were both nodding in agreement with the statements made by Fenton and Collig was rubbing his chin as he rose from his chair. "I’ll go back into the old police files and see what kind of info there might be in them referring to Joe’s kidnapping when he was four," Collig stated, "Riley, I want you to stay here until the end of your shift. I’ll send someone to relieve you." "Frank," Collig continued, "In the morning, I want you to come down to the station and work with a sketch artist. We need a picture of Reed and you are the best one to give us a good description. We’ll use it to issue an A.P.B. on the man. Fenton, I’ve got Reed’s place staked out. We’ll catch him." Ezra Collig squeezed Frank and Fenton’s shoulders before leaving.
