Officer Dinah La Goode and Gertrude Hardy
were sitting together in the family room of the Hardy home, waiting for
Ethel to join them. Dinah jumped as her radio crackled to life,
"Report in, La Goode!" came Chief Ezra Collig’s authoritive
voice.
"Yes, Sir!" Officer La Goode responded, "La Goode reporting, Sir!" "What’s going on over there, La Goode?" Collig asked, having been unable to reach Officer Chad Marks in the patrol car. "Everything is fine here, Sir," the young officer responded, apprehension growing in her stomach. She started walking toward the kitchen, looking for Ethel Radley. "La Goode, where are the Hardy women?" Collig asked. "Miss Hardy is here with me, Sir," the woman answered, "And Mrs. Hardy is resting in the living room." "Have there been any calls lately?" the police chief questioned. "Yes, Sir," La Goode answered, having reached the empty kitchen, "Mr. Radley called a few minutes ago. His wife was speaking to him, but I’m not sure where she’s at right now." "Check the phone, now." Ordered the chief. The female officer checked the phone for a dial tone, but found none. "No dial tone, Sir," the officer responded with a shaky voice. Her eyes glanced quickly around the room and stopped on the back door of the kitchen. The door was not closed all the way. "Sir, I believe an intruder may be on the premises as we speak!" "Secure the scene," Collig commanded, "Get the women to safety if necessary, I’ll radio Radley and Riley." * * * Laura Hardy went out the door with Andrew Whiteside, hoping that Officer La Goode and Officer Marks were watching. When they reached the car, Andrew opened the front passenger door. "Get in and move to the driver’s seat," he ordered. Laura got in and crawled over the console between the front seats. "Drive us to the cave, Laura. I’m sure you remember where it’s at, don’t you?" Laura nodded her head. She started the Lumina and pulled away from the curb, heading out of town toward Shore Road. "Is Joe at the cave?" she asked, shuttering as she thought of her son there with the horrid spiders again. "Joe was a naughty boy," Whiteside commented, "He didn’t obey my orders to behave himself and stay put. Foolish child tried to get away. I found it necessary to subdue him." "W-what did y-you do to my son?" Mrs. Hardy asked, tears streaming down her cheeks. Andrew smiled at Laura’s distress. "Let’s just hope Joe survives long enough for our little reunion at the cave." * * * Sam Radley was holding on for dear life as Con Riley raced through downtown Bayport. Sam didn’t mind at all as the reached the Hardy home in record time. Sam was out the door of his car before Riley even shifted into ‘PARK’. Both men ran to the front door with weapons drawn. Sam peered through the glass at the side of the door. His eyes grew wide in horror as he saw his lovely wife tied to a chair in the living room! Sam busted through the glass and reached in to unlock the door. Officer La Goode raced into the hall and trained her weapon on the figure breaking into the house. "Freeze! This is the police!" La Goode cried loudly. "It’s us, La Goode!" Riley called through the broken glass. She assisted the men by opening the door. Sam ran to his wife, Ethel. "Sweets! Are you alright?" he asked, gently pulling the tape from her mouth. "It w-was W-Whiteside, Sam!" Ethel sobbed, "He took Laura at knife point!" * * * In the darkness of the Lumina’s truck, Joe Hardy struggled to wake up. He felt like he was drowning in a sea of thick, black soup. It was stiflingly hot and difficult to breathe. The air was tainted with a foul odor the seeped into Joe’s nostrils with every breath. His head was pounding so badly that opening his eyes was out of the question. The fumes, the darkness and the pain working together pulled Joe back into the depths of unconsciousness. * * * "We need to get to the house at once," Ezra Collig informed Fenton and Frank Hardy. "Whiteside’s been there. He’s taken Laura." Fenton and Frank started for their car as a Chevy Lumina drove past. Frank froze as he watched the dark green car pass the motel. "Dad!" Frank cried out, "He’ll go to the cave! He has both Mom and Joe now!"
