"La Goode, check on Marks," Sam
Radley ordered, "If he tried to stop Whiteside, he may be
hurt."
"Maybe you should go check out Whiteside’s house next door," Ethel suggested, rubbing her wrists. "He took her to the cave," Con Riley said softly, looking up and meeting Sam’s blue eyes. "He’s going to kill Joe there and make Laura watch, finishing what his brother tried 13 years ago." "Let’s go!" Radley said, running for the door, "We haven’t got any time to spare!" * * * "A green Lumina just passed, heading for Shore Road!" Frank Hardy said, dashing for the passenger seat of the Concorde, while his father got behind the wheel. "Jefferson and Jetter," Collig called out to two of his officers, "Come with me now!" The trio jumped into Collig’s squad car and pulled out onto the road with the Hardy’s right behind them. * * * Laura Hardy pulled the car along the shoulder above the grassy slope that led to the rocky shoreline where the cave was located. She silently prayed that someone would get there in time to save Joe, if he was even still alive. "Get out and move to the other side of the guardrail," Andrew Whiteside ordered, "I’m going to get Joe now. If you try anything, I’ll slit his throat open without a second thought." Laura complied and watched as Whiteside moved to the trunk of the car. A sob escaped as she watched him pull Joe’s limp body over his shoulder. She thought for certain that Joe must be dead, but then she heard a soft moan. "Well," Andrew grinned evilly, "Looks like Joe decided to stay alive for the big finale. Get moving down the hill and onto the path to the cave, Laura. Remember that Joe’s life is on the line here." Laura moved carefully down the slope and onto the path that led to the cave. She forced herself to not look over the precipice to the crashing waters of Barmet Bay, twenty feet below. Visions of being on the rocky path with Adam Whiteside came flooding back as she neared the mouth of the cave. "Alright, Laura," Whiteside called, "That’s close enough. Joe wanted to know the whole story. I promised him that he would hear it from you before he died. I’m really not sure he’s up to listening, but a promise is a promise." He laid Joe against a rock, near the mouth of the cave. Laura ran to Joe and knelt beside him. She looked up at Andrew and asked, "May I remove the tape from his mouth?" Andrew nodded his okay. "Joe? Sweetie? Can you hear me?" she implored, holding Joe’s face between her hands. "Joe, please! If you can hear me, just open your eyes." Joe Hardy was struggling once again to rise to the surface of the black mire that kept him prisoner. He realized that he could breathe better now and he felt the cooler air around him. Through the darkness, he heard a voice calling his name. ‘Mom?’ Joe questioned in his foggy haze. He forced himself to focus on one task. Ignoring the pounding pain that encased his head, he opened his eyes. The sun’s glare was instantly blinding, but just as suddenly, a shadow blocked the sun, shielding him. "Mom?" Joe whispered hoarsely, "Is that you?" "I’m here Sweetie," Laura said soothingly, stroking Joe’s hair. Her stomach twisted as she came in contact with the sticky blood that was mingled through his hair on the back of his head. * * * Fenton Hardy pulled his Concorde behind Whiteside’s green Lumina, while Collig pulled his police car in front of the green sedan. "They’re by the cave!" Fenton cried, worried that they wouldn’t get there in time. He started climbing over the guardrail, when Chief Collig grabbed his arm. "If you go busting down there, Fenton," Collig cautioned, "What’s to keep Whiteside from simply pushing them over the edge?" "What do you suggest, Ezra?" Mr. Hardy frantically asked, "That I should stand here and watch that maniac kill Laura and Joe?" "If you don’t calm down, that’s exactly what’s going to happen!" the chief spat out. "Dad," Frank looked imploringly at his father, "We have to out smart him. How about you and I going around the other side of the cave entrance?" "Good idea, Frank," Collig agreed, giving Frank’s shoulder a quick squeeze. "I’ll call to him and identify myself from up here as soon as I think you two are in place. Be careful!" Frank and Fenton set off to take the path around the cave that Collig and Con Riley had taken 13 years earlier. Ezra Collig contemplated his next move. By holding his position at the top of the road, he would lull Andrew Whiteside into a false sense of security, but it meant Fenton and Frank had no assistance along the path if they ran into trouble. He needed someone down on the path, too. Collig glanced at the two officers with him and knew they were both too inexperienced at this kind of situation to be much help. Just when he thought he’d have to do the job himself, Sam Radley and Con Riley pulled up beside Whiteside’s Chevy.
