“I have no idea what you’re talking about!” Jill Shaw’s eyes flashed as she faced Frank and Joe Hardy.  “I’m allowed to meet with whoever I want.  Callie has no right to be spying on me!”

“Look, Jill,” Frank tried to be diplomatic, “The girls overheard the conversation.  Vanessa is sure you and your friend are after Joe.”

“That’s ridiculous!” the 15-year-old exploded.  She sneered in Joe’s direction, “What could I possibly want with him?”

Joe was fighting hard to restrain himself.  Jill was not going to cooperate and he was ready to strangle little miss-purple-hair.  He wished he’d never agreed to let Frank do all the talking.  Frank was way too nice and they were getting nowhere fast.

“I don’t have to answer any more of your stupid questions!  Leave me alone!” Jill shouted.  She turned away from Frank, pulled her leather jacket a little tighter around her and stormed off.

“That went just great!” Joe said with disgust.  “I knew I should have questioned her!”

Frank shook his head, “Yeah, right.  It would have ended with both of you shouting at each other with the same results.”

“So what do we do now, Brain?” Joe asked sarcastically.  “It’s not like she’s ever going to talk to us again.”

“We have five days ‘til Christmas,” Frank replied, ignoring Joe’s attitude. “Let’s follow her.”

Christmas Eve found Frank and Joe very frustrated.  Jill Shaw had led them on several wild-goose chases and dead ends.  They never saw her with the older man Callie and Vanessa described.

“I’m all out of ideas,” Joe sighed, lying on the family room floor beside the Christmas tree.

“Maybe it really was nothing,” Frank theorized.  “I mean, it’s been days since the girls heard that conversation, and nothing’s happened yet.”

“Yeah,” Joe grinned up at his brother, “I suppose you’re right.  Anyway, I’m not going to think about it any more.  I’m just going to enjoy the evening.”

“I hope Callie likes the earrings and necklace I got her,” Frank smiled, picturing the delicate jewelry on his girlfriend.  His revelry was interrupted by the door bell. Frank was at the door before Joe was even off the floor.

“Merry Christmas!” Callie greeted Frank enthusiastically, wrapping her arms around his neck.

“It’s freezing out here!” Vanessa cried from behind her friend.  Callie quickly stepped inside with Vanessa right behind her.

Joe came down the hall and greeted Callie warmly, but he scooped Vanessa up in his arms and carried her all the way to the family room.  He let her down gently in front of the fireplace.

“That was sweet,” Vanessa kissed his cheek.  Joe blushed and helped her remove her coat.

“Anything to warm up my girl,” Joe said softly.  He got to his feet and took Vanessa’s coat to the hall closet as Frank and Callie came into the room. Minutes later, the teens settled down comfortably for a quiet evening of exchanging gifts.

“I couldn’t risk being followed by those over-eager boy scouts,” Jill Shaw hissed into the phone.  “I can meet you tonight.  I know Callie went over to the Hardy’s house.  They won’t be following me, that’s for sure.”

“Good,” Grease said. “I think we can still do this, Jill.  We’ll let them drop their guard a little.  Just give it a couple of weeks.”

“That’ll work,” Jill agreed.  “If they think it was all a joke or something, maybe they’ll forget about it.  So, can I still see you tonight?”

“You bet.”

* * *

The room was painted Marine blue.  A sailboat border hugged the white ceiling and deep red drapes were pulled away from the windows with stout white ropes tied to pewter anchors.

The hardwood floor was white-washed to match the weathered white furnishings.  A braided blue rug lay beside the twin size bed.  The bed itself was covered with a Marine blue comforter.

An entertainment center filled one wall, complete with a television, VCR, computer, and stereo system.  An assortment of tapes, DVD’s and CD’s filled the shelves.

In the large walk-in closet, all new clothing hung neatly along one wall.  Shelves on the opposite wall were home to various pieces of sports equipment.  An assortment of shoes lined a shelf along the back wall of the closet, below several hooks.  The hooks bore a light weight coat, a rain poncho and two lighter weight jackets.

The man walked through the room and smiled.  It looked just as he’d envisioned it.  Now he could set the plan in motion.  Everything was ready.
