CHAPTER 37

Joe Hardy nearly fell out of bed trying to reach his ringing cell phone.  As he picked up the device, he glanced at the alarm clock beside his bed.

“This better be important,” Joe said into the phone through clenched teeth.  “It’s only 6:30 in the morning!”

“But its Christmas morning, my boy!” replied a cheery voice.

“Uncle Robert?” Joe asked in amazement. “What? Where are you?”

“In Haiti, of course,” Robert Daniels replied.  “I was thinking how much I’d love for you to see this place.  Beautiful, really!”

“Ah, about your offer, Uncle Robert,” Joe began, assuming that was what the older man was referring to.

“Forget that, Joe,” Robert said with a laugh, “I was being much too selfish.  I should have thought about a family long ago.  I’ll just have to live with my decision to stay single.”

“It’s not that I wasn’t flattered by your invitation,” Joe offered, feeling relieved, “but I don’t think I could leave my family and friends behind.”

“I called to give you a Christmas gift,” Robert said, abruptly changing the subject.

“A Christmas gift?” Joe questioned.

“I can almost picture your face right now, Joe,” Robert chuckled.  “Yes, a Christmas gift.  It is Christmas Day, after all!”

“Yeah, that’s right,” Joe smiled.

“I want you to come on the yacht with me for a week this summer, all expenses paid,” Robert stated. “The invitation is for you and Frank.  You just have to pick a date and we’ll finalize the plans.”

“That sounds awesome!” Joe enthused. “How will I get hold of you once Frank and I settle on a date? I mean, your cell phone doesn’t work on open water.”

“Call 1-033-943-0987.  That’s my friend in New York ,” Robert instructed.  “I check in with him every week, so I’ll get the message.”  Joe quickly jotted down the number on a scrap of paper.

“Thanks so much, Uncle Robert,” Joe said. “I really thought you would be mad at me…”

“Absolutely not!” interrupted Robert. “Joe, you are a terrific kid.  That brother of yours isn’t so bad either.” Robert chuckled softly.

“I was wrong to make such an offer to you and I hope you’ll forgive me,” Robert added.

“There’s nothing to forgive,” Joe responded. “No one else knows about it and, like you said, we’ll just forget it.”

Joe bid his uncle goodbye just as Frank poked his head into Joe’s bedroom. Joe looked up and gave Frank a big grin.

“Are you delirious or something?” Frank queried.  “What are you doing up so early and who were you talking to?”

Joe enthusiastically told Frank about Robert’s phone call, leaving out any reference to Robert Daniel’s original proposal.

“Sounds great,” Frank smiled.  “I’m sure we can make time for a week of sailing on a yacht in the Caribbean !”

“I’m too keyed up to go back to sleep,” Joe said “Why don’t we surprise Mom and Dad with a Christmas morning breakfast in bed?”

“Sounds like a plan!” Frank agreed.  In minutes the Hardy brothers were racing down the back stairs to their family’s kitchen.

Robert Daniels stared at his cell phone for a long time.  In his mind, he could picture his great nephew very clearly.  He could imagine Joe rushing to tell Frank about the proposed week on the yacht.

‘It’s not what I wanted,’ he thought, tapping his index finger on his chin, ‘but it will still be fine. Yes, things will work out just fine.’

Marvin Walker had joined the ‘Brotherhood of the New Moon’ four years ago.  At that time, he’d been working in the kitchen of a greasy-spoon diner in New York City .  When Captain Lucas met him, he began affectionately calling him ‘Grease’.  When Marvin joined the association, he insisted on using the name given to him by their leader.  His ‘New Moon’ brothers and sisters knew him only as Grease.  He knew them only by their chosen names.

Some, like the girl he was with the previous night, used their real first names.  Others made up names or assumed a name suggested by another member.

He sat in his motel room Christmas morning, drinking black coffee and thinking about Jill.  He knew she was very young; probably too young for him to be interested in.  But she had a lot of potential.  He had decided to help her pass her initiation and get promoted, no matter what it would take.

‘Watch out, Joe Hardy,’ Grease smiled.  ‘I’m comin’ to get you.’
