The rest of Christmas break passed all too quickly for Joe Hardy.  He crawled out of bed on January 2nd, wishing he had a few more days of vacation before going back to school.

As he showered, Joe reflected on the holidays and found himself smiling.  He’d gotten some great stuff including a new snow board from Vanessa that he’d not been able to try out yet, a DVD of his favorite movie from Frank and a sweatshirt from Callie that read, ‘If you think I’m cute, you should see my brother!’

Joe was drawn away from his thoughts by a knock on the bathroom door.  He quickly turned off the water and toweled off.  He opened the door to Frank’s room and peeked inside.

“All yours, big brother,” Joe announced.

“Thanks,” Frank replied, pushing Joe through the bathroom and into his own room.  “There better be some hot water left!”

Roger Davis stopped by the employee entrance of the Weismann Funeral Home.  He tapped tentatively on the door.  Mark Perry pulled the door open and invited the man inside.

“Let me see the casket,” Davis said, as he was led down a set of stairs to the basement.  Perry showed him into a room lined with coffins of various colors, styles and sizes.  Perry led the way to a gray casket lined with white satin.

“It’s the size you specified,” Perry stated.  “I reconstructed the end panels as you requested.  I take it, your ‘corpse’ won’t really be dead.”

“That’s right,” Davis responded.  “I’ll be transporting a teenage boy.”

“What in the world for?” Perry asked.

“I don’t get paid to ask questions,” Davis replied, but then gazed at Perry, “and neither do you.”

“I have the drug and the extra help you asked for all lined up,” Perry nervously said.

“Good,” Davis nodded.  “I’ll call you as soon as I know when we move.”

Jill Shaw slipped out of her aunt and uncle’s house early in the morning.  She knew she would be missed when she didn’t show up for breakfast, but Jill didn’t care.

She walked briskly in the frigid January air as she made her way to a small coffee shop near the library.  Jill smiled as she saw Grease sitting in a corner booth.

“Man, it feels so good to be away from that house!” Jill said as she slid in next to Grease.  “Please tell me this is all going to be over soon.  As soon as we take care of Joe Hardy, we can skip town.”

“Everything’s been arranged,” Grease grinned.  “We just need to pick a time and place.  Hardy will disappear and you’ll get your promotion.”

“Then we can leave?” Jill asked expectantly.

“Oh yeah,” Grease replied. “We disappear, too.”

Callie Shaw hated lying to her mother, but there was no way she would convince Mrs. Shaw that Jill was up to no good.  Callie watched her cousin slip out the door and quickly concocted a story that she was meeting Vanessa for breakfast before school.  Before her mother could respond, Callie was out the door and tailing Jill.

Callie pulled out her cell phone and dialed the Hardy’s number. “Hello, Frank? It’s me.  I’m trailing Jill.”

She quickly explained her approximate location.  Frank told her that he and Joe would be there in a few minutes.

Callie watched Jill go into a small coffee shop.  She strode past the front window, casually glancing inside.  Callie stopped on the other side of the building and dialed Frank’s cell phone.  Joe answered and Callie gave him the location of the shop.

Minutes later, Callie recognized Frank and Joe’s black van as it pulled up half a block away.

“They’re still in there,” Callie told Frank as the brothers walked briskly to the side of the coffee shop.

“Let’s just bust in there and confront them,” Joe suggested.  He was tired of this game Jill Shaw seemed to be playing.  “We’ll find out who this jerk is and what they want with me.”

“I don’t think the John Wayne approach will work, Joe,” Frank stated.  “We already scared Jill off once; let’s try not to do it again.”

“What do you suggest?” Joe queried sarcastically.  “Shall we just go in and sweetly ask them what they want from me?”

Frank shook his head, “Let Callie go in directly.  You and I can be out here on either side of the door.”

“Yeah, Callie flushes them out and we pounce on them!” Joe grinned.

“We confront them, not pounce on them,” Frank corrected.  “They haven’t done anything against the law, Joe.”

Joe and Frank moved into position on either side of the store as Callie went inside.  Chancing a quick glance, Joe saw Jill and the man standing up.  Jill was yelling something at Callie, but then she turned and stormed toward the front door.  Joe crouched low and moved closer to the shop entrance.

Jill Shaw pushed through the door and turned to go down the street.

“Going somewhere?” Joe asked, moving in front of her.

Just then, Callie burst through the door.  “Frank!  The guy saw you and he ran out the back door!”

Frank Hardy took off around the side of the coffee shop toward the alley.  Joe started to follow his brother, but Jill tripped him.

Joe struggled to his feet, and his heart leaped in his throat as he heard his brother cry out from behind the building.
