Joe
Hardy stood in front of the calendar that his mother kept posted on the
family bulletin board beside the back door of their house.
He carefully made a notation on the square for the next Friday
night. “Got
a big date planned for this Friday, little brother?” Frank asked as he
saw Joe writing a note on the January 12th space. “Chet’s
having a get-together,” Joe said, glancing at his brother.
“You and Callie are invited, too.
It’s not for any particular reason, just one of Chet’s
spontaneous party moods.” “Sounds
like fun, but Callie and I have a date,” Frank said with a smile.
“The two of us haven’t been out alone since before
Christmas.” “So
what do you have planned?” Joe queried. Frank
blushed, “Actually, we’re going to be studying together.” “You’re
kidding, right?” “I
know that doesn’t sound like much of a date,” Frank defended, “but
at least we’ll be able to spend time together.” “Maybe,
if you’re real nice to me,” Joe teased, “I’ll bring you home a
piece of Mrs. Morton’s famous Peanut Butter Pie.” “Ha!
I’m always nice to you, brat!” Frank replied, wrinkling his nose in
Joe’s direction. Joe stuck
out his tongue in return, just as their father walked into the kitchen. “What
have we here,” the elder Hardy said with a grin, “an episode of
‘Romper Room’?” “What’s
that?” Joe asked, perplexed. “It
was educational TV for children when I was young,” Fenton replied.
“I need to speak with you both before you leave for school.” “What’s
up, Dad?” Frank asked, hoping their father needed their help on a new
case. “I’ve
got to go out of town for the rest of the week,” Mr. Hardy stated
between sips of coffee. “I’m
a little concerned with this business with Callie’s cousin that you
told me about.” “We’ve
got it covered, Dad,” Frank assured.
“The gang is helping to keep a watch on Joe for a while.
So far, nothing’s happened.” “I
think it’s all just some joke,” Joe inserted.
“It’ll blow over in a day or two.” “I
hope so,” Fenton said, heading for the door.
“I’ve left a number with your mother.
Call if you need me.” The
boys said good-byes and “I love you’s” as they watched their father
leave. Frank and Joe then
climbed into their own vehicle and headed for *

few days later, Jill Shaw walked into the school cafeteria and moved to
the table Callie and Vanessa were saving for their group. “Ah,
could I sit with you today?” the fifteen-year-old asked, almost shyly. Vanessa
glanced at Callie, but shrugged her shoulders.
Even they were beginning to think they’d misunderstood what they
had heard at the mall. “Sure,
Jill,” Callie smiled, “but you know Frank and Joe will be sitting
here, too.” “Yes,”
Jill replied. “That’s why I want to sit with you.
I’ve been thinking, and I really need to apologize to all of
you; especially Joe and Frank.” “What’s
she doing here?” questioned a
voice from behind Vanessa. “Hi
Joe,” his willowy girlfriend greeted.
“Jill was just saying that she owes us an apology.”
Joe Hardy sat down opposite the young girl, but before he could
say any more, the rest of their friends were gathering around the table. Once
the group was settled, Jill spoke up.
“I’ve not been very nice to any of you, and I want to
apologize. “I
didn’t want to move here and I decided ahead of time that I wasn’t
going to make any friends here. I
never gave any of you a chance and really, you were all so kind to me
when I first came.” Jill
continued for several minutes, tears falling from her heavily made-up
eyes. “Frank
and Joe,” Jill continued, “I’m sorry about how I treated you
outside the restaurant the other day.
I should have introduced you both to my friend, Grease.” “What
about the conversation Callie and ‘Nessa heard in the mall?” Joe
asked, not sure whether he was buying her apology or not. “I
honestly don’t know what they heard,” Jill replied.
“I don’t remember even talking about you, except that I
mentioned that Callie was dating Frank.” Callie
watched Jill carefully. Could
she and Vanessa both have heard wrong?
She doubted it, yet Jill seemed so sincere. “I
think life is too short to not forgive and forget,” Callie said
finally. “Let’s just
start fresh from here.” The
others around the table agreed and soon everyone was chatting about
school events. Frank
and Joe exchanged a brief look. They
both realized that neither of them were buying all that Jill said, but
they’d go along for now. Jill
Shaw sipped her cola. She
glanced at Joe Hardy as he bent to whisper something in Vanessa’s ear.
She hid a smile as she thought how stupid Callie and her friends
must be to have believed her sob story. ‘Maybe
I should be an actress,’ Jill thought. ‘Bet I could win an Academy
Award!’
