“Now
we’re stuck waiting until the lab people have some results for us,”
Chief Ezra Collig commented as he stood beside Fenton Hardy outside the
Weisman Funeral Home. “Ezra,
you know Perry’s involved in Joe’s abduction as well as I do!” the
famous detective declared. “Until I can back up what I think, my hands are tied Fenton. You know that,” Collig replied. “I
don’t have to follow all the same rules, Ezra,” Fenton said, running
his hand through his dark hair. “I’m
going to put a tap on Perry’s office and home phones.
I’ll stake out his house tonight and see where that might lead
as well.” “What?
What was that you said, Fenton? Something
must be wrong with my hearing,” the chief cocked an eyebrow and peered
at Mr. Hardy, giving the man a brief wink before climbing into his patrol
car. As
a private investigator, Fenton Hardy had been know to ‘bend’ the law
a bit to collect evidence or bring a perpetrator to justice.
As long as his actions didn’t impede the investigation or hamper
the due process of the law, the local police usually looked the other
way. Fenton knew from
Collig’s comments that he had the chief’s blessings on his plans. *
* * “The
Brotherhood of the New Moon?” Frank Hardy questioned.
“What, exactly do you…ah, do at this church?” Marvin
‘Grease’ Walker and Jill Shaw had told Frank about their association
with the ‘New Moon’ church. “We
believe the cycles of the moon give us different abilities,” Grease
explained. “For example,
we’re strongest as the moon becomes full.
That’s the best time for physical activity.” Frank
and his friends Chet Morton and Luke Martin stared at the pair in
disbelief. ‘No,’ Frank
decided once and for all, ‘they don’t have Joe.
They’re too nut-so to have planned such an elaborate
kidnapping.’ Amidst
protests from both Grease and Jill, Frank called the police.
Jill was still a ‘missing person’ and Frank was obligated to
report it. *
* * “Here,
let’s get him settled in the bed,” Robert Daniels instructed.
Roger Davis and the butler, Saunders lowered the injured teenager. The
men quickly removed Joe Hardy’s shirt, shorts and shoes.
They then began assessing the boy’s injuries.
Joe’s left arm, near the wrist, was swollen and purplish in
color. His left side, from
the ribcage to the top of his briefs was dark red and angry looking.
Joe’s chest, face and legs bore several smaller bruises and
abrasions. Robert
noticed the boy was shivering and pulled up the thick comforter to cover
him. He glanced at the others
and knew they were thinking the same thing.
They did not have the means to treat Joe’s injuries on hand.
They would have to bring medical help to the island. “Roger,
see what we have in the way of painkillers in our supplies downstairs,”
Robert ordered. “Sir,
I believe I can fashion a splint for the boy’s arm,” Saunders
offered. “Yes,
please do,” Robert responded. “We
need to make him as comfortable as possible for the night.
We’ll not be able to get anyone here until morning to look at
him.” *

Hardy telephoned Sam Radley, his long time friend and partner.
Sam had just returned to his home in nearby He
filled Sam in on all the details and Sam, having known both Joe and Frank
since they were babies, agreed to aid his partner any way he could. “I’d
like for you to set up phone taps on both his business and home telephone
lines as soon as possible,” Fenton explained.
“I plan on tailing the guy in hope that he’ll lead me to
Joe.” After
talking to Sam and spending some time reassuring his wife and sister that
they were doing all they could to find Joe, Fenton prepared himself for a
long night ahead. He set the
alarm and took a brief two hour nap.
He then showered and dressed for the night. He couldn’t help but
think of his energetic younger son as he packed a duffle bag with
supplies for the stake out. Joe
hated stake outs and drove both his father and brother crazy when it
became necessary to be a part of one.
Joe just didn’t have the patience to sit and wait. Fenton
was startled out of his revelry by the ringing of the phone.
He quickly picked up the receiver. “Fent,
something interesting here,” Sam Radley started.
“I got the taps in place and the very first call sounds
suspicious.” “Tell
me about it, Sam,” Fenton urgently requested. “He
called a number in the Philippine islands,” Sam answered.
“He talked to a man named Peter.
The guy sounded like a Filipino national because when he answered,
he was speaking Tagalog.” “That
means he’s a native, not a public official,” Fenton commented,
knowing that Tagalog was a
common language among the Philippine villages, while English
or Spanish were most often used
by the government. “Perry
asked to speak with Roger Davis,” Sam continued.
“The guy said he’d have to try the radio.
A few seconds later, Peter tells Perry that “Sam,
can you find…” “Already
