CHAPTER 37

“There’s no trace of Hana or Peter Puta,” Roger Davis said disgusted.  “Their office is empty and there’s no sign of the ‘copter.”

“They didn’t just vanish!” Robert Daniels argued.  “Roger, Joe was injured.  Where would they take him in that condition?”

Roger looked around the small, private airfield just outside Manila in the Philippines .  Their chartered air-taxi helicopter was the only mode of transportation to be seen.  He shook his head.  The Putas and Joe Hardy seemed to have vanished into thin air.

Suddenly, Roger cocked his head as he spied a sheet of paper tacked near the door.  It was too white and clean to have been there for any length of time.  Roger pulled the paper off the wall and read in silence.

“They have him,” Roger said, catching Robert’s attention.  Roger looked up at his old friend.  “The Putas have Joe and they want a hundred and fifty thousand dollars for his return.”

Robert paled.  He could sell his yacht and come up with the cash easy enough, but could the Putas be trusted to return Joe unharmed?  “What should we do, Roger?”

“I don’t like this, Bob,” Roger shook his head. “Look, I agreed to help you kidnap your kid as a favor.  My debts been paid.  I’m outta’ here.”  Roger Davis walked away from the white-haired man, heading for downtown Manila .

Robert watched the lone figure walking down the dirt path that led to the city.  He was alone and he had to find Joe.  Robert walked slowly back to the helicopter.

“Take me into Manila.”

At the Hardy home in Bayport, the excitement was almost a physical presence.  Fenton Hardy and his eldest son, Frank, sat at the kitchen table with Sam Radley and Bayport police officer Con Riley.

Each member of the assembled group came with their own evidence of who had taken Joe and why.  Though all having approached from different angles, they had all reached the same conclusion.  Robert Daniels had kidnapped Joe Hardy.

“Let’s list all we know for sure, than we can deal with our speculations,” Fenton suggested.  The others nodded in agreement.

“We know that Roger Davis was hired by Daniels to take Joe. Davis hired Mark Perry to assist him. Perry, in turn, hired Jackson and another man named Dan Pratt, for added muscle.”

“Perry is the only one in custody at the present, although Dan Pratt shouldn’t be hard to find,” added Riley.  “The chief has cars looking for him now.”

“We also learned that the blue mini-van that the Shaw girl and her boyfriend saw belongs to Perry,” added Sam.  Frank gave him a questioning glance.  “We saw it behind the funeral home and ran the plates.”

“The tap Sam put on Perry’s phone places Davis in the Philippines,” Fenton continued, “and since we know from Perry that Joe was being taken some 18 hours away from New York, it’s a safe bet that Joe is somewhere in the Philippines, also.”

“We also know that Davis and Captain Lucas Davidson are brothers and that Uncle Robert left Davidson’s phone number as a contact number with Joe when he called over Christmas,” Frank stated.

“I’ve got some new info to add to the mix, gentlemen,” Sam smiled.  “I traced Daniels credit cards.  He’s been a busy shopping bee these past several weeks.  He’s purchased everything from furniture, to clothes, to sports equipment as well as enough electronic toys to keep any teenager happy.”

“Where were all these things taken to?  Were they delivered somewhere?” Frank questioned.

Sam grinned, “Bet you can’t guess what well-known archipelago they were shipped to, can you?”

“The Philippines!” Frank answered, his excitement growing as the pieces fell into place.

“Right-o! Give that man a cigar!”  Sam laughed.  “They were all delivered to a place called ‘Puta Air-Taxi Service.’  It’s located just south of Manila .”

“By the way, Sam Peterson called a while ago, Frank,” Fenton glanced at his dark-haired son. “He picked up both your friend ‘Grease’ and Captain Lucas for questioning.

“While he couldn’t find a tie between Davidson and Daniels, that so-called church of Davidson ’s is in a lot of trouble.  He’s keeping both of them under wraps for us on a long list of miscellaneous charges,” Fenton concluded.

“What’s our next move, Dad?”  Frank asked expectantly.

“Well, I think Sam and I are headed for the Philippines in the morning.  You wouldn’t want to join us, would you?” Fenton teased.

“Try and stop me!” Frank grinned.

“Relax, young one,” Peter Puta said to the blond youth that sat dejected on the mat in the mud hut.  “Your Papa will pay the money and you will go back to your island.”

Joe Hardy turned and glared at the man, his anger having over-ridden the pain of his badly bruised ribs and broken wrist.

“That man is not my father,” Joe said evenly.  “I don’t care about him or that island, and I certainly don’t plan on going back there!”

Robert Daniels picked up the phone in the lobby of the hotel.  He inwardly winced when he realized what time it would be in New York .

He dreaded making the call, but he had no where to turn.  He couldn’t contact the police – technically, he was a kidnapper.  He dialed the operator and placed the call.

Thousands of miles away, Fenton Hardy groggily reached for the ringing telephone.
