CHAPTER 37

When Joe Hardy opened his eyes, the small mud hut’s dark interior was invaded by light from the rising sun.  Joe glanced to where the pinkish, yellow glow came from and saw the door open.

He groaned softly as he forced himself into a sitting position on the mat.  Protecting his injured arm, he pushed against the wall until he was standing.

Joe didn’t know if he’d ever felt so bad before.  He was physically exhausted, hurting, hungry and very thirsty.  ‘I’ve probably been in worse shape,’ Joe mused, thinking of all the times he’d been kidnapped or beaten up. ‘Glad I don’t keep a journal.  This is something I definitely don’t want to remember.’

“Ah! You are awake.  This is good,” Peter Puta greeted the youth as he walked into the hut.  “Come.  We must go now.”  Peter helped Joe out the door and into the small courtyard.  Joe glanced at the entrance and saw a battered jeep.

‘This is really going to hurt,’ Joe thought as he eased himself into the seat beside Peter.

Flying through the various time zones was confusing and tiring. Frank Hardy sighed wearily.  He was sitting in the co-pilot seat beside Jack Wayne, while Conner, Sam and his dad slept.

“We’re almost halfway, Frank,” Jack said, sensing Frank’s restlessness.  “We’re doing the best we can.  Conner’s been pushing this buggy to her limit.”

Frank smiled, “I know.”

Jack patted the younger man on the back. “Joe’s a tough kid.  He’ll come through all this with flying colors, you wait and see!”

Frank shook his head and chuckled softly.  It was true.  For as many times as Joe tended to get into some kind of trouble, whether by accident or recklessness, he always seemed to bounce right back.

Frank became serious again.  “I know what you’re saying Jack, and it’s true.  But each time something like this happens, I wonder if it will be the one time he doesn’t make it or it becomes the last straw and pushes Joe over the edge.

“I don’t know if I could endure all he’s been through in his seventeen years and still have my sanity!” Frank finished.

“Roger Davis! This is the police!” Officer Ernie Bishop called loudly, “Freeze!”

Roger had moved inside the apartment complex and had pushed the button for the penthouse floor when he heard the police officer shout.

Cursing his stupidity at not being more careful, Roger raised his hands above his head and froze in place.

Officer Bishop and his partner, Officer Butler quickly subdued Roger.  He was frisked, handcuffed and led to the van the officers had been waiting in minutes before.

Officer Julie Butler read Roger his rights as they waited for their back up to arrive.

“What am I being charged with?” Roger questioned.

“Kidnapping, Mr. Davis,” Bishop answered.  “Why in the world would you kidnap a detective’s son?”

Roger’s mouth dropped open, but he couldn’t form any words.  A detective’s son!  Robert Daniels never mentioned that his relative was a detective!  ‘Watch your back Robert, buddy!  If I ever see you again, you’re a dead man!’

Hours later, back in Bayport, Callie Shaw looked at her alarm clock.  Nine o’clock . She had been awake most of the night, finding it impossible to sleep.  She figured Frank was probably in Manila by now, or very close.

She was concerned about Frank, his dad and the rest of the rescue party, but she was mostly worried about Joe.  While most of their friends thought she and Joe didn’t get along very well, they were mistaken.

When she and Joe argued and teased each other, it wasn’t out of dislike for each other.  ‘Oh,’ she smiled, ‘it may have been originally, but not now.’

Callie would never admit it to Joe, but she really did like him and respect him, once she stopped being jealous of his closeness to Frank.

“Frank, hurry and find your brother, please,” Callie said, closing her eyes and whispering a prayer.

Robert Daniels watched as the small plane descended.  His emotions were mixed with apprehension and relief.  Fenton would do whatever was necessary to get Joe from the Puta brothers, but he also knew Fenton would make him pay dearly for taking Joe in the first place.

“Stupid,” Robert said as he nervously ran a hand through his short, white hair.  “I risked everything just to get Joe, and he didn’t want to be with me anyway.”

“Daniels!”

Robert looked up into Fenton Hardy’s angry eyes.  The younger man was walking hastily toward him.

“Fenton, I know you’re angry,” Robert quickly stated, feebly raising his hands as if they could stop Fenton’s forward momentum, “but right now, we’ve got less than an hour to prepare ourselves for the encounter with Hana and Peter Puta.”

Fenton leaned into Robert’s face, “Once my son is safe, you will fly back to the States with us and turn yourself in to the F.B.I., because if you don’t, I can’t be held responsible for what I might do to you myself!”
