A
month later: Chief
of Police Ezra Collig shook hands with Fenton Hardy as the detective led
the man into the family room of the Hardy home, where Mrs. Hardy, Joe,
Frank and several of their friends were watching an old movie on
television. Joe,
Vanessa Bender, Biff Hooper and Luke Martin were sprawled on the floor.
Frank, Callie Shaw and Chet Morton were sharing the sofa. Laura
Hardy sat in an over-stuffed recliner with Iola Morton’s wheelchair
parked beside it. “Joe,”
Fenton addressed his younger son, “Chief Collig has some good news to
share with you.” The
younger Hardy scrambled to his feet and faced the two men, as the others
all turned to see what was going on. “I
just wanted to tell you that Raphael Jackson has finally been caught,”
the chief stated. “He was
the last loose end. “We
were finally able to trace the drug he used on you.
He was caught bringing more of it into the country.” Joe
thanked the police officer, walking him to the door with his father. “Well,
my boy,” Fenton said, putting his arm around Joe’s broad shoulders as
they walked back to join the rest, “it’s great to have you home
again.” “Great
to be home, too, Dad,” Joe smiled at his father. The blond youth
stopped and looked down at his feet.
He bit his lip and looked back at his father. “I
can’t help thinking this is all my fault,” Joe said sadly.
“If I’d told you about Uncle Robert’s proposal in…” “No,”
Fenton scolded. “True, it might have been wiser to tell us, but that
wouldn’t have kept Robert from trying to take you. “Joe,”
Fenton lifted his son’s chin and gazed intently into his deep blue,
tear-filled eyes, “none of this was your fault.
While Robert’s death was a tragic accident, this whole mess was
his doing, not yours.” Fenton
wrapped his arms around Joe. The
younger man returned the embrace. “I
love you, Dad,” Joe smiled before returning to the family room. Before
Fenton could follow, he turned to look down the hall as the front door
opened. Gertrude Hardy and
her gentleman friend, Tigh Cassidy walked into the house. Fenton
couldn’t help but notice that the couple looked so right together.
He helped them hang up their coats and led them into the family
room with the others. As
soon as they were in the room, Tigh cleared his voice, noticeably loud.
The others in the room all turned toward the sound. “Trudy
and I have something to say to you all,” the distinguished man said
with a sly smile. Fenton
raised his eyebrows questioningly, and perched on the arm of Laura’s
recliner. “We
had planned on making this announcement earlier,” Gertrude began,
“but with all that’s happened in the past month, we waited.” “We
wanted to give Joe a little time to recover from this whole, horrid
ordeal,” Tigh added, giving the younger Hardy a warm smile.
He looked directly at Joe as he continued, “You are an important
part of this, Joe.” Gertrude
looked up at Tigh and nodded encouragingly. “Trudy
and I are getting married,” Tigh announced.
“Fenton, I’d like you to be my Bestman.” “And
Laura,” Gertrude turned to her sister-in-law, “there is no one I’d
rather have as a Matron of Honor than you.” “Congratulations!”
Frank shouted, jumping to his feet and pumping Tigh’s hand.
The others followed suit and joined Frank. “Frank,
Joe,” Tigh called above the excited chatter.
“We want you both to be Groomsmen.
Your aunt will ask Callie and Vanessa to be Bridesmaids, too.” “We’d
be honored,” the Hardy brothers answered in unison. A
few minutes later, Frank and Joe excused themselves to go and get
refreshments for everyone. When
they were alone in the kitchen, Frank peered at his brother carefully. He
knew Joe was upset about Robert’s death and all that he’d been
through prior to it. Maybe
this was the perfect time to add a new member to the family. “You
realize,” Frank began, helping Joe put cheese and crackers on a tray,
“that once they’re married, Tigh will officially be our uncle.” “Oh
no!” Joe cried, his eyes wide. “What?
What’s wrong, Joe?” Frank asked, afraid he’d said the wrong thing.
Then he noticed the mischievous twinkle in his younger brother’s
eyes. Joe
grinned at Frank and replied, “Another relative; Just what we need!” THE
