CHAPTER 37

Robert Daniels shook Frank’s hand as Laura made introductions.  He then grasped Joe’s hand, looking the blond boy over carefully.  Joe felt uncomfortable at the close scrutiny, and as Robert released Joe’s hand he smiled warmly.

“I must apologize to you, young man,” Robert directed to Joe, “Now I can see that you bear your father’s straight nose and firm jaw line, but when you first walked in the room…I was quite startled.”

Joe glanced questioningly at his mother.  “I’ve mentioned before, Joe,” Laura explained, “that you certainly favor my side of the family.  Uncle Robert looks very much like your Grandpa Joe; they were twins.”

Joe smiled with understanding.  Though he didn’t remember his maternal grandparents at all, he had often been told that he looked much like his late grandfather.

“So I guess that means I’ll probably look like you one day,” Joe said to his great uncle.

“Not for a long time, we hope!” Robert quipped with a grin.

During the next few days, Robert Daniels delighted in spending time with Laura’s two boys.  Though he admired Frank’s intellect and maturity, he thoroughly enjoyed Joe’s sense of humor, enthusiasm and zest for life.

He had so enjoyed himself, that at Laura’s insistence, he decided to stay a little longer with the Hardys.

Callie Shaw escorted her long time boyfriend into the spacious living room of their home, festively decorated for the holidays.  Frank had met Callie’s Uncle Ray and Aunt Jessica Shaw before, but he was always nervous about meeting any of Callie’s relatives.

Callie’s parents liked Frank and quickly helped put him at ease as the group discussed some activities the young people had planned for Christmas break, including the Christmas Ball at the Country Club where the Shaws were members.

Jill Shaw had sat silently in the corner of the room.  Her hair was deep purple now and hung limply to her shoulders.  Her eyes and lips were lined heavily in black make-up.  She wore a black t-shirt that exposed her mid-drift, showing off a butterfly tattoo and belly-button ring.

Mrs. Shaw got up as the doorbell chimed and returned a few seconds later with Joe Hardy and Vanessa Bender in tow.  Introductions were made and Joe had to work overtime to keep from staring at Jill.

Finally the teens excused themselves and headed out into the cold winter air to the Hardy’s van.  Jill, grabbing a leather jacket, tagged along reluctantly at her parents insistence and was the last to climb into the vehicle as they headed for ‘Mr. Pizza’ at the mall.

“I’m surprised that Uncle Robert gave you a day off,” Frank said to Joe with a smile, “He seems to really enjoy spending time with you.”

“It’s mutual,” Joe agreed.  “He’s really cool for such an old guy.  You should see him play ‘Daredevil’ at the arcade.  He scores higher than me!”

While Joe continued to talk about the various activities he’d done with his great uncle, Jill Shaw watched the younger Hardy with great interest.

He reeked of wholesomeness with his all-American good looks and exuberant personality.  She suppressed a giggle as she imaged his favorite foods were pizza, hot dogs and apple pie.  Maybe the next several weeks wouldn’t be so boring after all.  Joe Hardy could definitely be a challenge.

Robert Daniels had enjoyed the trip into New York City with Laura and Fenton.  He’d only wished the boys had come along.  He smiled as he thought about the time he’d spent with Joe and Frank.

“Laura,” Robert started on the drive north to Bayport, “Do you think Joe would come and visit me on my yacht sometime; perhaps for a week or two in the summer?”

Laura glanced quickly at her husband to see Fenton’s reaction.  Fenton was still smiling and he glanced in the rearview mirror, catching Robert’s eyes.

“I wouldn’t count on it too much, Robert,” Fenton said, “The boys probably have their summer pretty well planned out already.”

“But it’s only December 13th!” the older gentleman protested.

Fenton chuckled, “Yes, but they’ve started making plans already!  I know both the boys plan to work this summer: Frank has a job working with our friend Jack Wayne.  Frank loves planes and is eager to work around them, maybe even get to do some flying for Jack.  Joe has agreed to work for my sister’s fiancé at his inn.  They hope to open this spring.  Joe gets along quite well with Tigh Cassidy and I know he’ll be a help to the man.”

“Of course, they’ll squeeze in plenty of time for swimming, picnicking, boating…” Laura added.

“I get it,” Robert laughed.

“And of course, there’s always a chance that a new mystery will come along for the boys to help with,” Fenton concluded.

Neither he nor Laura noticed the sudden change in Robert’s attitude.  The very idea of exposing those boys to Fenton’s dangerous line of work made Robert sick to his stomach.
