CHAPTER 37

Saturday, December 16th, had dawned bright and clear as Joe Hardy peered out from under the navy comforter on his bed.  He yawned and stretched, kicking the heavy blanket away and shivering slightly against the cool air.

He made his way to the bathroom that separated his own room from Frank’s.  He glanced at the closed door and wondered if Frank was up yet.  He then looked at his reflection in the mirror.  The dark circles under his eyes gave away the fact that he’d had a difficult time sleeping the previous night.

‘What’d ya expect after that bomb shell Uncle Robert dropped?’ the blond teenager pondered.  His great uncle had told him to think the matter over and they’d talk about it again before he left on Monday.  Joe clearly understood now why Uncle Robert hadn’t invited Frank on the outing.

Joe hadn’t decided if he should tell his parents or Frank about Uncle Robert’s proposition.  Though he had no intention of taking his uncle up on the offer, Joe was flattered that his uncle wanted him.

He didn’t think his parents would be very happy about it, especially his dad.  Although his father had been nice enough to Uncle Robert, Joe could tell that it was a forced kindness.  Joe knew his dad wasn’t terribly crazy about Robert Daniels.

A knock on the door startled Joe and he turned to see Frank peeking in the door.  Joe gave his brother a grin, “I’ll be done in a sec.”

“No hurry,” Frank returned the smile, “I’m already dressed.  Just wanted to know if you and Vanessa want to go to the movies with Callie and me later this afternoon?”

“I’ll give ‘ Ness a call as soon as I’m done,” Joe responded, and then looked his brother in the eye.

“Frank?  Something weird…I, ah…never mind.  It’s probably nothing,” Joe finished and turned to brush his teeth.  Frank shook his head and grinned, “Okay, little brother.  Let me know about the movie, though.”  Joe flashed Frank an ‘okay’ sign as he continued to brush.

When Joe came downstairs a few minutes later, his mother and uncle were at the kitchen table.  Joe gave Robert a smile as he made his way into the kitchen.

“Have any plans for the day, Joe?” Robert asked as he watched Joe pour a cup of coffee into a bright yellow mug.

“Actually,” Joe replied, “I’m going to the park this morning.  We’re going snowboarding with some of the gang.”

“How about later this afternoon?”

“’ Ness and I are going to the movies with Frank and Callie,” Joe responded, peering over the rim of his ‘Smiley Face’ mug.  He could see the disappointment in his relative’s eyes, but Joe wasn’t ready for another conversation like the one he’d had with his uncle the previous afternoon.

“Well, it certainly sounds as if you have a full day planned,” Laura Hardy interjected, gently ruffling her son’s blond waves, then turned her attention toward the older man,  “Guess I’ll have to come up with something for us to do, Uncle Robert.”

Jill Shaw left her aunt and uncle’s home early Saturday morning.  She was glad for the reprieve from the ever-conservative house, no matter how fancy it was decorated.

She wasn’t completely familiar with the town of Bayport yet, but she knew where the city park was and that’s where she was headed.  It took less than twenty minutes to reach the park, and Jill quickly made her way down an icy path to the frozen pond at the center of the grounds.

A lone figure shuffled against the cold on the walkway as Jill approached.  The figure turned and Jill grinned.

“Hi Grease,” the 15-year-old girl greeted.  “You got something for me?”  The figure facing her was smiling.

“Here’s your approval from Captain Lucas to get things in motion,” the man called Grease said.  “Our people are at your disposal.”

“Great,” Jill responded.  “He’ll never know what hit him!”

Callie Shaw peered through the evergreen trees toward the pond.  Who was her cousin talking to?  She’d seen Jill leave the house and followed out of pure curiosity.  Now the pretty honey blond was perplexed.  She only wished she was close enough to hear Jill’s conversation with the stranger.

Pulling her coat tighter against the early morning December air, Callie decided she was going to have to keep a closer eye on her cousin Jill.

Jill Shaw made her way past Callie’s hiding place picturing Joe Hardy in her mind’s eye.  She glanced at the envelope in her hand before tucking it inside her leather coat.  With a little luck, she’d get her promotion before the end of January.

Robert Daniels had declined Laura’s invitation to tour the inn her sister-in-law and future brother-in-law were remodeling.  Now, with Fenton and the boys gone too, he sat brooding in the silence of the empty Hardy house.

There had to be a way to convince Joe to come with him.  People would have no trouble accepting Joe as his son despite his age, because of the strong family resemblance.  He sat in silence for several hours, when he finally stood up.

With a sigh, he went to the guest room and began packing his things.
