“I still can’t believe Robert left without saying good-bye,” Gertrude Hardy commented as she placed a platter of homemade apple waffles on the breakfast table.

“He did say good-bye,” Fenton interjected, putting aside the Sunday newspaper.  “It was in the note he left.”

“He said he was invited to spend Christmas with some friends in Haiti ,” Laura added, putting the syrup on the table.  She had been very disappointed also by Robert’s abrupt departure; still, she wasn’t about to let it show.  She knew the boys, especially Joe, had to be terribly hurt.

Joe Hardy sat uncharacteristically quiet during the breakfast discussion.  He tried to imagine why his great uncle had left a day earlier than planned, and figured it had to do with his proposal.

Even though Joe hadn’t taken the time to talk with Robert again, he had been careful to avoid the man as much as possible since the offer had been made.  Joe assumed that his uncle figured out that Joe wasn’t going to go with him, and he took off early to avoid the disappointment Joe’s refusal would bring.

Inwardly, Joe sighed.  At least he wouldn’t have to ever tell his parents about the offer Robert Daniels had made to him.

* * *

Callie Shaw and Vanessa Bender were best friends, despite their differences.  Callie was more petite with small features, shoulder-length, honey blond hair and warm brown eyes.  Vanessa, in contrast, was tall and willowy. Her ash blond hair cascaded to the middle of her back and her eyes were an unusual blue-gray color.

Their differences didn’t end there.  Callie was more outspoken, yet very feminine and social.  Vanessa was creative, funny and a natural athlete.  Still, the pair got along very well and often spent time together.

“Tell me what you bought for Joe,” Vanessa begged, as the girls walked into the Bayport mall.  “I’ll tell you what I got for Frank.”

“No way!” Callie laughed.  “My Christmas gift for Joe remains a secret until we get together on Christmas Eve to exchange gifts.”  It was a well known fact that Callie and her boyfriend’s brother loved to torment each other.

“I bet you got him some silly gag-gift,” Vanessa continued, ignoring Callie’s response.

Callie was about to say something when she stopped suddenly.  She grabbed Vanessa’s arm and pulled her into the closest store.

“What’s going on?” Vanessa demanded, looking at her friend.

“There, by the coffee shop,” Callie replied, peering through the store window. “That’s my cousin Jill.  Do you know the guy she’s with?”

“No,” Vanessa replied, “but he looks quite a bit older than her.”

“What are you up to, Jill?” Callie questioned out loud.

“Let’s find out!” Vanessa said with a grin.  Callie stared at her incredulously.

“My God!  You’re turning into Joe! You’re becoming as impetuous as him!”

Vanessa giggled and led Callie by the elbow.  They made their way to the coffee shop, keeping behind Jill Shaw’s line of sight.  The two teenagers slid into chairs a few feet from Jill’s table.

“Everything is set,” the man was saying.  “We’ll make sure your friend is taken care of.  He won’t be hurt at all.”

“Mr. All-American is not my friend,” Jill sneered.  “He’s the brother of my cousin’s boyfriend.”

An involuntary gasp escaped Vanessa as she realized that Jill was making some kind of plans that involved Joe!  She glanced at Callie and knew her friend had made the same deduction as well.

Jill suddenly seemed suspicious.  She’d heard a noise and decided to cut the meeting short.  She made arrangements to meet Grease in a few days to finalize plans.  Grease paid the bill and left with Jill following a few minutes later.

“Did you hear that?” Vanessa hissed.  “What did he mean by, ‘We’ll make sure your friend’s taken care of’?  What are they going to do to Joe?”

“I haven’t the slightest idea,” Callie replied calmly, “but I think we need to go find Frank and Joe right now!”
