CHAPTER 37

The Hardy brothers had spent the afternoon carrying boxes of Christmas tree trimmings down from the attic of their century-old house.

Though the rest of the house had been festively decorated for the holidays since Thanksgiving, Laura Hardy preferred putting the trees up closer to Christmas.

Joe and Frank carefully set a blue spruce up in the dirt-filled bucket and carefully braced the tree with the metal tree stand.  The large pine stood 8 feet tall, almost touching the high ceiling of the Hardy’s family room.

“Great job, boys!” Laura said with delight.  “We’ll be all set for the tree-trimming party tomorrow night.”  It was a tradition for the past several years, that only their immediate family decorated the small, artificial tree in the front living room, but the big tree that would shelter the abundance of gifts for family and friends was decorated by the boys and their friends.

The boxes were carefully unpacked and the ornaments and other trimmings were separated into neat piles.  Frank and Joe then carried the empty boxes back to the attic.

Frank had just started down the back stairs when the front door bell sounded.  He quickly made his way down the hall and glanced at the front stairs when he heard Joe’s thundering gallop.

“Thought I heard the door bell,” Joe said, catching Frank’s glance.

“You did,” his dark-haired brother replied, pulling the front door open.

“Well, this is a pleasant surprise,” Frank smiled, seeing Callie and Vanessa standing on the front porch.

“I’ll say!” Joe added, grinning in Vanessa’s direction.  His grin quickly turned to a frown as he saw Vanessa’s worried expression.  Both girls began talking at once as they followed Frank and Joe into the hallway.

“Whoa, ladies!” Joe exclaimed, “Slow down.  I haven’t made out a thing you’re trying to tell us.”

“She’s your creepy cousin,” Vanessa said to Callie, “you start.”

Callie took a deep breath and relayed the conversation they overheard at the mall.  “I suspected she’s been up to something from the peculiar way she’s been acting,” Callie finished.

Frank and Joe exchanged a quick glance, but then turned their attention back to their girlfriends.  It wasn’t the first time one or both of their lives were threatened.  Having followed in the footsteps of their famous detective father, the boys had made their share of enemies.

“Did you recognize the guy she was with?” Frank inquired.

“I don’t know who he is,” Callie answered, “but she’s met with him before; at least twice that I know of.”

“You followed her?” Joe asked, surprised.

“Yes,” Callie replied, wrinkling her nose in Joe’s direction.  “I guess I’m learning from you guys.  Like I said, she was acting suspicious, like she had some big secret to keep.  So one day about a week ago, I followed her.  She met with the same guy we saw today.”

“And she’s done this more than once?” Frank asked.

“Yes,” Callie said, “but maybe even more.  I only followed her twice.”

“Weird,” Joe muttered.

“What?” Vanessa asked, holding tightly to Joe’s hand.

“Ah, I just think this is weird,” Joe answered. “Why would Jill’s friend be after me?  I don’t know him from the description you’ve given us and I certainly don’t know Jill very well.”

“Well, until we can piece this mystery together, you are going to have to be extra careful,” Frank addressed Joe.

“No problem,” Joe grinned, “Careful is my middle name!”

Frank, Callie and Vanessa all groaned, but started laughing.  Everyone knew that being careful wasn’t one of Joe’s greatest attributes.  However, Joe’s comment broke some of the tension the girls had been feeling.

“Invite Jill to the tree-trimming party tomorrow night,” suggested Frank. “I’ll figure out a way to get her alone and question her; see if I can get any leads to who this guy is or what they’re up to.”

“Sounds good,” Callie smiled.  The boys walked the two girls out to Vanessa’s red jeep and bid them good-bye.

“What do you really make of all this?” Joe asked Frank as they returned to the house.

“I haven’t a clue, little brother,” Frank replied, opening the front door.  “Hopefully we’ll get some answers tomorrow night.”

“Could you please sign here, Sir?” the delivery man held out a clip-board.  Quickly, the man at the door of the spacious house scrawled his signature on the invoice.

He watched the man leave then he carried the large box up the stairs.  He walked into the first bedroom and set the box down.

As the sound of a helicopter faded in the distance, the man smiled to himself. He surveyed the contents of the room; everything was just about set.
