CHAPTER 26

The early spring morning dawned cool and clear over Bayport, New York. Gertrude Hardy was an early riser and enjoyed sitting on the front porch of her brother Fenton’s home, sipping her morning coffee.

As Miss Hardy finished her coffee and was glancing over the headlines of the morning paper, a police cruiser and a black sedan pulled up in front of the two-story, corner house.

"Good morning, Miss Hardy," Officer Con Riley greeted, waving his hand. Gertrude stood and opened the front door, calling inside for her sister-in-law. Laura Hardy was dressed and ready to leave for her volunteer work when Gertrude called her.

"Gert, what did you need?" the pretty, petite blond asked, coming out onto the porch. She glanced first at her tall, angular sister-in-law, but her attention was immediately drawn to the two men in dark suits that were following Con Riley up her drive way.

"Morning, Laura," Con smiled. He had become good friends with the Hardy family over the years and behind his smile, Con was concerned about the government people and their presence here. "These gentlemen need to speak with you about the case Fenton is working on now. They are from the CIA."

"Would you all please come in?" Laura’s mouth formed a tight smile as apprehension filled her soul. Uninvited government agents and police at their doorstep always meant trouble. "I have a fresh pot of coffee brewing."

"They’re not in the dorm room and their duffle bags are missing," Sam Radley said as he came back into the courtyard.

"That explains the missing truck," Conner Bailey responded with a frown.

"What truck?" Sam asked.

Conner went on to repeat a conversation he had just had with Tomas’ Du Pree. The doctor had an old pick up truck that was used for bringing supplies from town.

"There is no way Frank and Joe would go off to fight an army by themselves." Sam stated, shaking his head, "Frank’s far too sensible for that!"

"Then where did they go, Radley? Those stupid kids are going to get themselves killed!" Conner bellowed, "I knew I should have put them on a plane home yesterday!"

A small, brown skinned girl made her way silently to Sam Radley’s side. She tugged gently on the sleeve of the man’s shirt. Sam looked down at the tiny girl and smiled, despite his concern for Frank and Joe.

"Da go," the girl spoke, pointing to the gate. "Da go out dare."

"Wait," Sam took hold of the little girl’s hand, "Show me where the truck went!" The child led Sam and Conner to the gate. She then pointed, not into the jungle where they had been the day before, but toward the path that led to Di Heer.

"Why would they head to town?" Conner asked. "That doesn’t make sense."

Sam had a sick feeling in his gut, "Yes, it makes perfect sense to them. Where does Santiago go to get his new recruits?"

"Into the small towns and vill..." Realization dawned on Conner Bailey. "This is all my fault. They’ve decided to infiltrate Santiago’s militia by becoming part of it."

"Let’s go," Sam said, seething with anger toward Conner, "Maybe we can catch them before Santiago does." Sam turned to face Conner, "You better start praying that we do, Bailey, ‘cause if something happens to those boys, I’ll...I..." Sam’s voice trailed off, but his meaning was crystal clear.

"Mrs. Hardy," Agent Drew Lucas began after introductions had been made and coffee had been served, "Have you heard from your husband since he left for South America?"

"Only when he stopped in Guatemala to refuel," Laura stated, "but, he sometimes makes arrangements to contact our sons. Apparently, he didn’t this time because the boys left for a fishing trip with a family friend during their spring break." The two agents glanced at each other briefly.

"How can we contact your sons?" Agent Adam Curtis asked.

"Sam has his cell phone, but if they’re deep in the woods, he may not have coverage," the blue-eyed woman replied. "Why? What’s wrong?"

"Your husband never made contact with our operative in Bolivia at the hotel," Agent Curtis answered. He pulled his hand through his thinning gray hair. "There is also a report from our surveillance people in the area, that a small plane made an emergency landing in the jungle. The Peruvian government reported that no one was aboard the plane by the time their people arrived on the scene."

"Are you saying that Fenton and Jack are missing?" Laura Hardy asked, her eyes wide with fear.

"I’m afraid that is our conclusion at this time," replied Agent Lucas.

"Oh no," Laura Hardy responded, glancing at her sister-in-law with tears in both their eyes, "Then Sam and the boys aren’t fishing. They’ve gone to find Fenton and Jack!"
