Callie Shaw saw her best friend at the end of the hall of Bayport high school. The pretty blond immediately began weaving her way through the throng of students anxiously escaping for home.
"Vanessa!" Callie called out to the tall, ash blond girl who was closing her school locker. Vanessa Bender turned toward Callie’s voice and waved.
"Hi, Cal," Vanessa smiled, "Was Frank in school today?"
"No," Callie answered, "I was just going to ask you the same thing about Joe." Vanessa shook her head. Callie frowned. She had been worried all day. She and Frank Hardy had been dating for several years and he did a pretty good job of keeping her informed of his whereabouts. "What do you suppose is going on? It’s not like them to not call us."
"I think they probably aren’t back yet." Vanessa said with a twinkle in her eye, "After all, they’re fishing with Sam Radley and they probably are having too much fun to think about school." Vanessa had only been dating Joe since the school year began, but she knew him well enough to know he’d much rather be fishing then sitting in Algebra class.
"That’s true for Joe, but not for Frank," Callie replied, unconvinced, "Frank likes school." Frank was definitely the more studious of the two brothers.
"Well," Vanessa began, "We could just stop by their house and see what’s going on. Maybe they just got in really late last night and decided to stay home today."
"Let’s go in my car," Callie suggested, "We can swing by here later and pick up your jeep." Vanessa nodded and threw her backpack into her red jeep, locking it. She climbed into Callie’s blue Neon and the two young women headed for the Hardy’s house.

"Sam!" Frank exclaimed, gazing into the steel-blue eyes of his father’s closest friend. Sam Radley let go of Frank’s wrist and climbed into the truck cab beside the youth. At the same time, Conner Bailey appeared outside the driver’s side window wearing a fierce scowl.
"Look," Frank began, "I know I’ve got a lot of explaining to do, but now is not the time. We’ve got to follow Joe!"
"Where is he?" Sam asked, trying hard to contain his anger and fear.
"Ah...Santiago’s recruiters have him in a truck at the edge of town." Frank replied, expecting Sam and Conner to yell, Frank quickly interjected, "They were ready to pull out, so we’ve got to hurry!"
Conner opened the driver’s door and Frank squeezed over beside Sam. "I don’t like this one bit, Frank," Conner stated, "But since you two have put it in motion, we’re going to go with it."
Frank sat silently between the two angry adults, secretly glad that they had found him before he went after Joe.

Jason Hladley moved about the militia compound on his routine patrol. He purposefully edged closer and closer to the small buildings where prisoners were kept. As he reached the prisoner huts, he made a show of inspecting the locks on all the doors. When he reached the fourth hut, he looked around carefully. Sure that no one was watching, he casually inspected the lock as he slipped a small package through the slat in the door.
Jason jumped as his name was called. His patrol partner, Raphael Batissta waved for him to come. Jason looked beyond Raphael and saw the recruit truck entering the compound. He and Raphael were to help escort the new recruits in to meet with General Santiago.
Jason didn’t particularly like this assignment. Many of the recruits were here against their own will. Some would fight or try to escape. As their escort, it was up to Jason and the others to prevent this from happening, even if it meant shooting a recruit.
This particular group seemed quite passive. Three were South American, probably Bolivian. The other two were of European descent, having fair coloring. Jason looked at them more closely. He hid a smile as he recognized the tall, blond youth. He knew from pictures that the young man was Fenton Hardy’s younger son.

Callie Shaw pulled her blue Neon into the Hardy’s driveway. She and her friend, Vanessa Bender became instantly alarmed as they watched a black sedan and a patrol car pull away from the curb in front of the house. The girls hurriedly exited the car and ran to the front door.
Laura Hardy sat stunned at the kitchen table. Her husband was missing and her sons were probably in South America somewhere looking for their father. Tears fell from her eyes as she suddenly felt a pair of hands on her shoulders.
"Laura," Gertrude Hardy said softly, "They’ll be home before we know it with an exciting tale to tell, I’m sure!" Laura couldn’t help but smile. At times, Gertrude was truly a god-sent.
"Thanks." Mrs. Hardy responded, placing a hand on top of her sister-in-laws hand. Both women jumped at the sound of the doorbell.
"I’ll get that," the older woman offered. Gertrude made her way to the front door. She opened the door and was rushed by Frank and Joe’s girlfriends.
"Where are they? Are the boys hurt? What’s wrong?" came the barrage of questions from the two anxious females.
Laura Hardy made her way to the hallway to see what the commotion was all about. Callie and Vanessa took one look at Mrs. Hardy’s tear stained cheeks and red, swollen eyes, and knew that something was horribly wrong.
