THE CHAPTERS |
Frank Hardy and Sam Radley donned the camo-fatigues of the two militia soldiers that Frank had subdued. The soldiers would be expected to return to the compound and Frank and Sam planned to be there in their place. They joined Conner Bailey outside the church, and the three men headed toward the main entrance of the compound, well under the cover of the jungle.
They positioned themselves where they could see inside the wrought-iron gates, into the courtyard. Frank peered intently at the soldiers milling around inside the compound. He wanted desperately to see his brother, Joe.
Frank grew increasingly frustrated as the day wore on. Around noon, two militia soldiers moved to the gate. They opened the gate and began walking toward town.
"Seems they are missing their buddies and are going to look for them," Conner whispered. "Think we can take them down, gentlemen?"
"No problem," Sam quipped, "We know Frank can handle two of them; should be child’s play for us, Conner." Frank blushed at Sam’s joke.
"Frank," Conner began, "I want you to stay here in case Joe tries to contact you. I think Sam and I can manage these guys. We’ll be back in a few." They took off quickly into the jungle before Frank could protest at all.

Joe Hardy left General Santiago’s office full of apprehension. Santiago had ordered Joe to work the night shift patrol inside the compound. As a newcomer, Joe was suspicious. Surely this was a highly unusual assignment. Why would Santiago be sending him, an inexperienced new recruit, on patrol?
"Joe!" Jason whispered into Joe’s ear as they left the main building, "this couldn’t be better! It’s perfect! With us on patrol, we’ll be able to get your dad and friend Jack out easily!"
"I don’t know, Jason," Joe replied quietly, "This doesn’t feel right. I think it might be a set-up. Santiago is either testing me or he suspects something."
"You’re giving Santiago way too much credit," Jason said with a shake of his head. The boys headed toward the ‘Mess Tent’ for lunch. "I don’t think he’s all that smart. He still believes your dad and Jack are American reporters."
"I don’t know, Jason. I wish Frank was here." Joe was unconvinced, "I think Santiago’s more shrewd than you think. We need help."

Jack Wayne sat on his cot stroking the stubble of the beard that was growing on his chin. He glanced over at the quiet form lying on the opposite cot. He knew that Fenton Hardy had been disturbed at the sight of his youngest son with Santiago’s militia.
"Mr. H?" Jack questioned softly, "You realize that Frank is probably close by, don’t you?"
Fenton looked at Jack’s tan face. "Yes. I’m inclined to believe that Conner, and possibly Sam are with them as well. I guess I just didn’t expect to see Joe in the middle of the enemies camp."
"I wish I could talk to him and see what their plan is," Mr. Hardy pondered, "Joe was with Jason. I’m sure Jason filled him in on all that’s been happening since we arrived here."
"Yeah, we’re kinda in the dark without a campfire here," Jack quietly responded.

Frank tensed as he heard movement in the foliage behind him. He stayed low and swung the M-16 toward the sound.
"Easy, Frank," Sam Radley whispered, approaching the youth.
"You and Conner took care of them?" Frank asked, and then turned to see Conner Bailey moving in beside him.
"Piece of cake," Sam replied, mimicking Frank’s words from earlier that day.
"Good news and bad news, Frank," Conner began, opening the backpack he had been carrying with him. "Our little friends were persuaded to share some information with us about the activities of the camp. One of the new recruits was killed trying to escape last night, but it wasn’t Joe. The boy’s name was Cotter. Also, these guys were upset because Santiago has a new recruit working patrol within the compound tonight. A guy named Daniels will be patrolling with the Senator’s son."
"Way to go Joe!" Frank grinned, proud of his little brother.
"Hold your enthusiasm, Frank." Conner continued, "Why would he be letting a new recruit work a patrol already? Santiago’s suspicious and I think he’ll be watching Joe very closely."
"So Joe may not be able to contact us or help us get inside," Sam reasoned. "What have you got there?" Sam looked at the object in Conner’s hand.
"Plastic explosive," Frank answered, also eyeing the bluish clay in Conner’s hand.
"I’ve got a plan that I think will work, whether Joe is able to contact us or not." Conner smiled. "It will require precise timing, but I think we can..."
Frank Hardy and Sam Radley exchanged smiles of confidence after listening carefully to Conner’s plan.
