CHAPTER 26

Conner Bailey slipped through the gate into the shadows along the compound wall. Already, there was a kink in the plan. Joe Hardy was not in position.

‘Where are you, Little Brother?’ Frank Hardy worried, moving closer to Jason Hladley, along with Sam Radley.

"Where’s Joe?" Sam questioned Jason in a frantic whisper.

"He was on his way just a minute ago!" Jason replied, "Then he vanished!"

"Let’s stick to the plan and let Conner get into the ammo building," Sam advised, "Hopefully, Joe will turn up before Conner is done."

Conner watched as Sam, Frank and Jason began arguing, just loud enough to be noticed. Conner moved along the wall until the ammunition building was directly across from him. He sprinted across the courtyard, glancing in all directions for any prying eyes. He quickly picked the lock on the door of the ammo building and slipped inside.

Conner removed the plastic explosive and set three, small charges. They would blow up the ammunition building, but nothing more. He set the charges to go off in five minutes.

As he moved to exit the building, Conner saw a soldier approaching. At first, he thought it might be the missing Hardy brother. Peering through the dirty, barred window, Conner saw the young man had a darker complexion and black, curly hair. Definitely, not Joe Hardy. Conner looked around the room for a hiding place, but couldn’t find one. ‘If he comes in here,’ the tall cowboy surmised, ‘I’m a dead man.’

Joe Hardy had made his way around the compound and was near the prison cells along the north wall. He was moving to join Jason at the gate as planned, when movement at the forth prisoner’s hut caught his attention.

Joe watched a hand struggling to reach the lock. He knew immediately that it was his father’s hand trying to use the key Jason had provided. Joe saw his dad almost drop the key and Joe knew his father needed some help.

Joe reached out and grasped his father’s wrist, causing the key to drop. He then retrieved the key and opened the padlock. Pulling it free, Joe tugged the metal door open and slipped inside.

Fenton Hardy jumped to his feet as soon as his wrist was released. He moved to the side of the door, ready to pounce on the intruder. Jack Wayne, sensing what Fenton was doing, moved to the opposite side, behind the opening door. They were just too close to escape to let anyone stop them now.

As the figure moved inside the door, Fenton jumped forward, catching the soldier off-guard and bringing him down to the ground. Fenton pinned the struggling youth down, getting a glimpse of his face.

"Joseph?" Mr. Hardy gasped, peering into a familiar pair of sapphire eyes. "What are you doing here?"

"I, ah... thought you could use a hand," Joe replied, giving his father a cocky grin. Fenton got up, pulling Joe to his feet, also. He grabbed his youngest son in a warm embrace.

"Hey, Little Joe," Jack added, reaching up and giving Joe a light slap on the back. "I hate to break up this reunion, but don’t you think we outta get out of here?"

"No!" Joe said, "Just be ready to move. When you hear the explosion, watch the south gate. It’s just about 10 yards from here, to the left of your door. One of us will come get you or signal for you to run."

"We’ll be watching and waiting," Fenton assured his son. Joe nodded and went out the door, fading into the shadows.

Frank Hardy continued to do his part, but he grew increasingly more worried about his missing brother. Had someone seen him and suspected something was going on? Had Joe seen someone and was trying to keep that person from getting too close? Soon they would be out of time. Once the explosion went off, they would get his father and Jack and escape out the south gate. There would be no time to search for Joe. ‘Come on Joe! Get over here!’ Frank silently pleaded.

Lt. Damien Azareel had a bad feeling that something was not right. He noticed the returning patrols arguing with Prvt. Hladley. What was going on and why had Prvt. Daniels disappeared?

Azareel peered into the courtyard. He noticed the sentry from the south wall had entered the courtyard. Had he seen something? Another figure was moving toward the sentry. The lieutenant didn’t hesitate another minute. He picked up his weapon and moved out the door.

"Prvt. Errinson, Prvt. Stokes," Lt. Azareel commanded the two young men posted outside his door, "Come with me now!" The trio headed down the stairs toward the militia courtyard.
