CHAPTER 26

Seconds before the explosion, Sam Radley stepped up close to Frank Hardy and Jason Hladley and whispered, "Think its time to stir things up a bit?"

The three men turned to the courtyard and began firing their weapons. Those few militia soldiers that had come outside began diving for cover.

Moments later, the explosion erupted, sending flames soaring into the night sky. Several secondary explosions kept everyone at bay.

"Go get your dad," Sam ordered Frank. Jason told Frank which hut his father and Jack Wayne were being held. Frank propelled himself toward the forth prison cell.

Conner Bailey and Joe Hardy were running toward the prison cells from the opposite direction. They spotted Fenton Hardy and Jack Wayne already moving out of the cell.

"Run! Run like you never have before!" Conner shouted, sending Fenton and Jack sprinting toward the south gate, with Conner close at their heels and Joe not far behind.

Frank saw them coming and turned to join them, relieved at the sight of not only his dad and Jack, but also Conner and Joe. The five of them ran for all they were worth toward the south entrance.

They were nearing the last of the prison huts when Joe Hardy came to an abrupt halt. The others kept running, not noticing Joe. Joe moved beside the hut and peered through the smoke, across the courtyard. A large black car was pulled up in front of the main building. Mafesto Santiago made his way from the building and climbed into the car.

Joe knew he should forget about Santiago and just get out of there, but he kept seeing Jake Cotter’s body crumble to the floor and he heard Diego Martinez’s screams. Joe watched the car lurch forward. Joe lifted his M-16 and took careful aim. He fired a round at the front tires of the car, blowing them apart. The car careened wildly and crashed into the front of the dormitory.

Conner Bailey heard the machine gun fire directly behind him and glanced back. His heart dropped when he saw Joe aiming into the smoke. Without a second thought, he made an about face and ran to grab Joe.

Satisfied with his handiwork, Joe lowered the weapon and started jogging toward the gate again. He came face to face with a furious Conner Bailey.

"What are you thinking, Joe?" Conner bellowed, "Get it in gear and let’s get out of here!"

"I’m coming!" Joe shouted, taking off.

Lt. Damien Azareel heard noises. People were shouting and running. What was happening? He forced his eyes open. The compound was filled with smoke. He remembered the explosion. He remembered Prvt. Daniels. ‘He knew that building was going to blow up. Daniels tried to kill me.’ With determination, Azareel got to his knees and looked around intently for just one person.

In seconds, he recognized Joe Hardy beside one of the prison huts. His anger burned as he watched Prvt. Daniels shooting at some unseen target. Azareel looked for his weapon, and mustering all his strength, he raised the gun to his shoulder, peering through the scope.

Joe Hardy began running back toward the gate, Conner Bailey close beside him. Neither was aware of the man aiming for the middle of Joe’s back.

Joe felt like fire was tearing through him and realized he wasn’t moving. He felt someone lifting him over their shoulder and he wanted to scream as the pain shot through him like red-hot arrows.

Conner never heard the shot, but saw Joe pitch forward, a crimson stain spreading quickly on the back of Joe’s shirt. Conner turned to see where the shot had come from. He saw Lt. Azareel falling forward in the dust, his eyes glazed over in death.

Not knowing how bad Joe’s injury was, Conner didn’t feel that he had the liberty to investigate. He picked Joe’s still form up and pulled him into a fireman’s carry, running for the gate.

Sam Radley was still posted at the gate, having watched the others run into the jungle for cover. ‘Where are Conner and Joe? Frank said they were right behind them!’

Suddenly, Conner appeared through the smoke with Joe draped over his shoulder. Sam felt sick as he noticed the blood staining Conner’s shirt.

Sam led the way into the jungle where the others had gone minutes before.

Fenton Hardy looked up as he saw Sam crashing through the foliage. He was relieved when he realized that Sam wasn’t alone. Joe and Conner had to be right behind him. Then he saw Joe on Conner’s shoulders. ‘Oh God,’ Mr. Hardy thought, ‘Not now. Please.’

Conner gently laid Joe down near Fenton. "He’s been hit. I don’t know how bad, but out here, even a scratch can be deadly." Conner stated, carefully removing Joe’s shirt.
