THE CHAPTERS |
"Whoa, look at this place!" Joe Hardy’s blue eyes sparkled as he gazed at the mansion. They were driving up the long, circular drive of Senator Richard Hladley’s home in South Carolina. Mr. Hardy’s rented black Concorde came to a stop at the bottom of a set of wide, marble stairs that led to a massive oak door. A man dressed in a white tuxedo came to the Hardy’s car and opened the door for Mrs. Laura Hardy first, then opened the rear door for Frank and Joe.
"Welcome!" came a greeting from the top of the stairs. Senator and Mrs. Hladley and Jason stood smiling as their guests approached. "Mr. and Mrs. Hardy, we are so glad you could make it. Frank and Joe, we’re glad you’re here!" Mr. Hladley said. The Hardys were escorted inside the Hladley home.
Within the hour, the group at the Senator’s house increased. Jack Wayne and Conner Bailey arrived, followed shortly by Sam and Ethel Radley. They had all flown in to Columbia, South Carolina the previous day. The entire assembly gathered in the formal dining room for a succulent feast.
"I can’t begin to thank all of you for rescuing Jason," the senator began. "I never imagined that it would have to involve so many people, and almost cost the life of one." Mr. Hladley fixed his eyes on Joe Hardy, who had been discharged from the hospital the previous week. He was fully recovered from the gun shot wound he sustained escaping from Mafesto Santiago’s compound.
"I’m fine now," Joe stated, blushing at the attention, "and it was my own fault, anyway. If I had kept going, Azareel would never have been able to get a shot at me."
"At any rate," the senator continued, "I’m glad you’re all back in the states, safe and sound."
"Do you know the out come of the raid on the compound?" Mr. Hardy asked. "We had to get Joe to the mission as quick as possible. We missed the actual invasion."
"The good news is that Santiago was captured. He was trapped in his car. Apparently, it crashed into one of the buildings and the roof caved in on it. Santiago and his driver had only minor injuries." Senator Hladley said. Conner looked right into Joe Hardy’s deep, blue eyes and rewarded him with a wide grin and a wink. "Unfortunately, there were seven fatalities. Four were young men, and the others were adult officers. It will take months to find out where all the boys belong. The people of Bolivia, Peru and the surrounding areas will sleep much better knowing their children will not be stolen by Santiago’s people."
"Joe, you’ll be glad to know that Diego Martinez is back home in Brazil with his family," Jason Hladley stated, but then added in a softer tone, "Also, Jake Cotter’s body was returned to his family in New Zealand."
Joe closed his eyes for a minute, remembering the tall, sandy haired boy he saw murdered before his eyes in Santiago’s quarters.
"Conner," Mr. Hladley started, quickly changing the subject, "I want to make a financial donation to the ‘Arms of Mercy’ mission. They were very instrumental in this whole operation as well."

As the adults continued talking, Jason motioned for Frank and Joe to follow him. The trio headed out the back doors of the mansion, into the private garden.
"This place is incredible," Joe exclaimed, still awed by the impressive structure and grounds. "I’d need a map to find my way around here!"
Frank Hardy smiled as he watched his younger brother. Joe had recovered quickly from their ordeal in South America and he was glad to see Joe just kicking back and having fun.
"I kinda took this place for granted most of my life," Jason stated, smiling at Joe’s exuberance, "Until...well, being with Santiago for over three months, I’ve come to appreciate everything back home a whole lot more."
"Like my dad, I just don’t know how to thank you guys," Jason continued. "Maybe you can hang out here awhile. We’ve got tennis courts, volleyball, pool tables, Olympic size pool and even a bowling alley." "Sounds great, Jas," Frank smiled, "But we’ll have to take a rain-check. I’ve missed two weeks of school and Joe’s missed over three. We really need to get home."
"Ugh! You had to mention school," Joe wrinkled his handsome nose in mock disgust.
"Well, Joe," Frank added with a devilish grin, "there’s also that tall, pretty blond back in Bayport that misses you, too."
"Oh, yeah," responded the younger Hardy, smiling broadly, "Sweet Vanessa! I can’t wait to see her!"
"Maybe I’ll come up to Bayport one day," Jason commented, "I’d love to meet all your friends."
"You’d be welcome, Jason," Frank answered, "Just don’t bring any machine guns or camo-fatigues!"
"Gotcha!" Jason replied, laughing with his new friends.
