CHAPTER 26

Frank Hardy moved quietly through the jungle shadows. For the first time in his young life, he felt totally alone. Frank just hoped that Joe, Sam and Conner were all safe.

Joe Hardy thought his heart had stopped as the angry voices shouted too closely to his position. They were heading directly for him. Joe didn’t hesitate to take off for cover, deeper into the jungle. His thoughts went to Frank. ‘Frank and Sam are too smart to get caught.’ the youth thought. To be safe, Joe worded a silent prayer, ‘God, keep Frank and Sam safe, please!’

Both Hardy boys moved silently through the dark shadows, neither knowing where his brother was located. The brothers had been searching for each other for several hours when Joe saw movement.

Joe caught a glimpse of motion to his left, behind a row of low trees. ‘Was that Frank’s tan shirt and dark hair?’ Joe wondered. He dropped to the ground and crawled closer to the trees. Joe decided to take a chance and pursed his lips to blow a familiar bird whistle.

Frank froze at the unnatural sounding whistle, his heart hammering in his ears. As he dropped flat to the ground, he picked up a slight movement off to his right, low in the shadows. He squinted, peering into the darkness and recognized a pair of sapphire blue eyes. Frank smiled to himself and returned Joe’s whistle.

Reunited, they began to move again through the South American jungle. Suddenly, they heard a loud click that definitely didn’t belong in the jungle. They turned instinctively and in unison toward the sound. They found themselves looking into the barrels of two powerful machine guns, aimed right at them.

Fenton Hardy and Jack Wayne were startled by the sound of movement outside their prison door. Two young soldiers came into the cell, carrying sub-machine guns. The boy to the right of the door could have been mistaken for Joe Hardy at first glance. He was 6’ with blond hair and blue eyes. The second boy, on the left side of the door, was dark skinned with a shaved head. He was taller and older looking than the blond youth.

"Come," the dark youth ordered, banishing his weapon, "General Santiago wishes to speak with you both."

"Frank! Joe!" hissed Sam Radley through clenched teeth, carefully lowering the weapon that just moments before was aimed at Frank Hardy’s head. Conner Bailey, likewise, lowered the gun he had trained on Joe. The two older men sighed as Frank and Joe sank to the jungle floor, flooded with relief.

"I think I just lost 5 years off my life," Frank whispered, running his fingers through his damp, dark hair.

"Let’s go," Conner smiled, offering the boy a helping hand, "We’ve got a long hike back to the jeep."

"NO!" Joe whispered fiercely, jumping to his feet, "We haven’t found Dad or Jack yet! We can’t leave them here!"

Conner quickly turned from Frank and pulled Joe by his shirt collar until he was two inches from Conner’s face.

"I have every intention of finding my best friend and your father, but we do it my way, Joe!" Conner spoke firmly, but without anger to the younger Hardy boy; staring intently into his deep, blue eyes. "The four of us are no match for an entire army. We need to go back and strategically plan our next move. Do you understand?" Joe knew Conner was right. He looked down, embarrassed to meet Conner’s gaze.

"I’m sorry, Conner," Joe humbly stated as Conner released his grip on the boy’s shirt, "I know you’re right. It’s just that...my Dad...I’m so frustrated..." Joe’s emotions wouldn’t let him continue. Conner patted Joe’s shoulder in understanding as the foursome headed back toward the hidden jeep.

"Mr. Hammer and Mr. Watson. You are American journalists, yes?" Mafesto Santiago inquired of the two men who stood before him. Fenton Hardy and Jack Wayne had been led at gunpoint into a large room in the biggest building of the compound. Fenton wondered whether the question from Santiago was a trap to reveal their true identities. He decided to hold to their cover identities and take the chance.

"General Santiago," Mr. Hardy finally began, "I’m Fredrick Hammer. This is my associate, John Watson. We are freelance writers hoping to do an interview with you. We wanted to do a story on your organization, making your cause known to the American people. However, we had plane trouble and had to make an emergency landing in your jungle."

"My jungle?" Santiago was only 20 years old, but carried such an air of confidence, that even Fenton Hardy felt intimidated by the man. "It is not my jungle, Mr. Hammer. I will grant you an interview." The young man paused, tilting his head slightly as he looked at Fenton, then Jack. "Tomorrow morning. Escort them back to their quarters, but return to them their belongings."

The same two young men escorted Fenton and Jack back to their cell. They were each given a duffle bag, containing their already ransacked belongings. Fenton began to turn away from the locked door, when a small piece of paper fluttered through the slat in the center of the metal door. Mr. Hardy retrieved the paper and read the hand written message scrawled on it.

‘I know who you are. Please help me. I want to go home.’ It was signed by Jason Hladley.
