One week later...

"...so I guess my leaving home was just too much." Billy Hardy said to the group that had gathered to welcome Joe Hardy home from the hospital, "All those years of talking about Frankie and Joey and wishing like crazy that they were my brothers, Dad must have been both jealous and angry."

"Well, Uncle Buck will get the help he needs now," Fenton Hardy said, putting an arm around his younger cousin. "I just wish we had noticed some signs that your dad was this disturbed before he went to this extreme."

"I’m just thankful that it’s over!" sighed Laura Hardy, her sapphire blue eyes coming to rest on the matching pair of her 17-year-old son.

Joe smiled at his mother. He’d gotten out of the hospital that morning, after a week of having his injuries taken care of. He had developed an infection from the multiple lacerations on his body, which were treated with mega-doses of antibiotics. He was also treated for dehydration. Joe was just glad to be home again.

"Dad?" Joe said softly, "What happened to Rita?"

"Rita Conway," Mr. Hardy began, "was released on bond. She won’t see any jail time, son. She wasn’t in on the plot to kidnap you. Buck had lied to her and used her to baby-sit you while he did his dirty work." Just then, the front door bell rang. Frank went to answer the door.

"Hello, Frank," greeted officer Con Riley, "How is Joe?"

"He’s home and he’s as ornery as ever!" Frank replied, "Come on in." Frank stepped aside to let Con in, but Con stood aside to allow a dark haired woman in first, then followed.

"Rita!" Joe’s face lit up as Rita Conway walked in to the Hardy’s living room. He smiled warmly at the woman who had saved his life. Rita returned Joe’s smile with one of her own, and was pleased to see the boy looking much better.

Laura Hardy rose from her chair and walked up to Rita. With tears in her eyes, Laura hugged Rita. "Thank you," Mrs. Hardy whispered.

"You’ve got a pretty spunky kid, Ma’am," Rita replied. She moved across the room and knelt beside the recliner where Joe was seated.

"I came to say goodbye, Sugar," Rita said, taking Joe’s hand in her own, "I’m allowed to go home to Texas, thanks to your statement to the police." She looked into Joe’s eyes and felt tears come to her own. "I’m so sorry for what Buck did to you, Sugar. I should have done more to stop him."

"You saved my life..." Joe began, tears filling his eyes, too.

"You heal up real good, Sugar," Rita said with a wink, "Then you come see me, okay?"

"You bet," Joe replied with a grin, wiping the tears off his cheeks. Rita stood and bent down to place a tender kiss on Joe’s cheek, causing the boy to blush. "Get well, Sugar."

Con escorted Rita to his squad car and headed for the airport.

"Well Baby Brother," said Frank Hardy with a sly grin on his handsome face, "There is one really cool thing that came from all this, you know?" He moved over to perch on the armrest of Joe’s chair.

Joe looked at Frank’s grinning face and knew he would regret it, but he asked anyway, "And what might that be, Big Brother?"

Frank put a high-pitch drawl to his voice and replied, "Why, your new nickname, Sugar!"
