THE CHAPTERS
|
Joe Hardy tried to move by was immediately
seized in a coughing fit, causing a fiery pain in his chest. When the
coughing subsided, he slowly opened his deep, blue eyes. He saw a dark
haired woman of about 30 years old looking at him with a concerned
expression.
"You okay, Sugar?" she gently asked. Joe tried to respond, but his mouth was too dry to talk. The woman realized the problem and quickly left the room. She returned with a foam cup of water. She helped Joe into a sitting position against an oak support pole, and then held the cup to his lips for him to drink. "Easy cowboy," she said with a smile," You’re gonna drown yourself!" "W-where am I?" Joe asked, glancing around the room. He was in a log cabin with one, big front room, a kitchen nook in the back, and two smaller rooms, probably bedrooms, on either side, near the kitchen. "Well, Sugar," the woman said, moving away from Joe and perching on the edge of a tattered, green sofa, "I’m really not sure, but it’s all part of the game. I’m sure Buck knows. He’s gone to leave the first clue for your family." Joe had no idea what kind of game the woman was talking about, but when she mentioned Buck’s name, he began shivering uncontrollably. "Hey, Sugar," she said, noticing the boy’ shivering, "here’s something to keep you warm." She pulled a gray, flannel throw off the back of the sofa. She knelt beside Joe and pulled the soft fabric around his shoulders. "There now," she said with a smile, "that’ll help keep you warm. Think I’ll make us some soup. That’ll warm you up even more!" She rose and went into the kitchen. She began singing softly to herself as she fixed the soup. Joe stared at the woman’s back as she left. ‘How can she act like this is a vacation or something?’ Joe wondered. At the mention of Buck’s name, Joe had instantly remembered what had happened in his family’s kitchen. Buck had been in the kitchen waiting for him. He had a gun pointed at Joe and shot him in the chest. Joe had reached up to where the pain was exploding and felt a thick- shafted dart. He reached behind him to steady himself, putting his hand on the refrigerator door. He fixed his eyes on Buck as everything began to fade. ‘Why is this man that I love and trust doing this?’ Joe thought as his world went black. * * * * * "I’ve asked you all here because I need your help," Frank Hardy’s dark brown eyes moved from one face to the other. Many of Frank and Joe’s trusted friends sat in the Hardy’s family room. Frank filled them in on all that had transpired during the night and throughout the day. The teens all sat momentarily shocked at Frank’s words. "What can we do to help?" asked Biff Hooper, a tall, beefy blond jock, as he elbowed chubby, blond Chet Morton. "Ow – yeah, Frank," Chet asked, giving Biff a hard look, "what can we do?" "Well, I’ve got a plan that involves all of you..." Frank started, but was interrupted by the front door bell. Frank went to open the door and was immediately seized in a big, bear hug.
