Billy Hardy checked out of the Bayport Motel.
He was deeply concerned about what was happening at his cousin Fenton’s
home, and quickly threw his gear in the back of his pick-up truck.
‘I’ll certainly do my part for Joey,’ the cowboy smiled, ‘or my
name isn’t Billy Buck Hardy!’
* * * * * "Come on Nic, we’ve got to get back to Frank with this information!’" cried 18 year-old Tony Prito to Nicky. 17 year-old Nicolas Prito and Joe Hardy had become close friends over the years. "You bet, Tony," Nicky agreed, a grin filling his tanned face. * * * * * Joe Hardy froze. He knew it was useless to try and outrun a bullet. Buck had deliberately missed him by mere inches. Defeated, Joe turned to face Buck. As much as he tried not to, tears filled his eyes as he watched Buck aim the gun at him again. "Come along now, Joseph," Buck gleefully called to the boy, "I really don’t want to kill you, but I will if you make me!" Joe blinked back his tears, determined to not give Buck the satisfaction of seeing him cry. He painfully made his way back to the cabin. * * * * * "Frank!" Nic yelled as he ran toward the black van that had just pulled into the Hardy’s driveway, "We’ve got some information!" Frank had just returned from the police station, where Chief Collig had given him a copy of the lab test results from Joe’s shirt, the bag and the fingerprints lifted from the mailbox. "I’ve got news, too!" Frank said, waving the folder in his hand, "Maybe we can start making some headway on this case!" Upon entering the house, the boys were greeted by blond, blue-eyed Callie Shaw, Frank’s girlfriend since Junior High. She put a finger to her lips, indicating the need for silence. A quick peek in the living room showed Mrs. Hardy and Frank’s Aunt Gertrude sleeping. "They dozed off a while ago," whispered Callie, "Everyone else is in the kitchen." Callie noticed Frank hesitate. "It’s all cleaned up," Callie said, knowing Frank hadn’t wanted to face the grim reminder of Joe’s abduction. "Vanessa and I cleaned it up after we checked with Con to make sure it was alright. ‘Nessa has been incredible, " Callie continued as they made their way toward the kitchen door, "When I first told her, she lost it. She screamed and cried." "Then what happened?" Frank asked, concerned for Joe’s pretty, blond girlfriend. "I asked her about coming over here and helping your mom and aunt," Callie answered, "She pulled herself together and said she would do anything to help out and get Joe home safely." "Frank," Vanessa Bender smiled at Joe’s older brother as he walked into the kitchen, "I’ve made some hot chocolate." Vanessa’s bright gray eyes were rimmed in red as if she had been doing a lot of crying. "Thanks for helping ‘Ness," Frank gave the willowy blond a comforting hug, "We just got some new leads. Don’t worry, we’re going to find Joe." Vanessa began to sob into Frank’s shoulder. Callie felt tears spring to her own eyes. "Come on Vanessa," Callie gently said, "I’ll help serve up that hot chocolate." The teens gathered solemnly around the kitchen table, many glancing at the now clean refrigerator. "Guys," Frank began, "I just got the results from Joe’s t-shirt. It was Joe’s blood, but there was only a small amount and the puncture hole in the shirt was made from a tranquilizer dart, not a bullet." The others let out an audible sigh of relief as Frank continued. "Collig is trying to trace where the dart may have come from and they are running the prints from the mailbox and the plastic bag through the FBI files now." "Frank," Tony Prito began, glancing at Nic, "we found someone who saw the delivery." "What delivery? Who?" Frank cried, looking intently into Tony’s dark eyes, "What did you guys find out?" "Your neighbor, Mike what’s-his-name next door," Tony continued, "said he saw a truck stick something in your mailbox." "He said it was a beat up, red pick-up," added Nicky, "and the driver never got out." Frank could hardly contain himself. He jumped up from his seat and grabbed Nic and Tony from behind in a huge hug. Because of the late hour, a second visit to Mike Anderson next door was out of the question. The group departed, planning to reconvene first thing in the morning. Shortly after the others left, the doorbell rang and Frank raced to open it, but stopped as he saw his mother letting Billy Hardy into the foyer. Billy gave Laura Hardy a warm hug. "Hey Billy," Frank called out. "Mom, why don’t you wake Aunt Gertrude and you both head up to bed? I’m going to talk to Billy awhile, and then he’s going to bunk in Joe’s room tonight. We’ll close up the house." Mrs. Hardy, emotionally spent, nodded in agreement. She woke her sister-in-law and the two women went to bed. Frank told Billy about Joe’s t-shirt. Just before heading to bed, Mr. Hardy arrived and Frank filled him on their activities and discoveries. Fenton told Frank about the leads he found concerning the chloroform containers and valves. Finally, the three men went to bed.
