THE CHAPTERS |
Kendall Preston stretched and yawned as he climbed out from beneath a tangle of sheets. Glancing out the window, a smile creased his handsome face. Today was the first day of their 4-week family vacation and, even though their vacations were always working vacations, Kendall knew he would have plenty of free time to enjoy the small East coast city they were visiting. Kendall followed the smell of frying bacon. As he passed the other bedrooms on his way, he heard the familiar sounds of their morning routines. His younger twin brothers, Denny and Davy were engaged in a pillow fight and his sister Lindsey’s hair dryer was running. The sounds made Kendall smile all the more. Entering the kitchen, he found his pretty mom busy at the stove. "I thought Richie hired someone to cook for us?" he asked as he planted a warm kiss on his mother's cheek. Richie was more than just their manager. Ever since their mother had joined their basement formed band, the Preston Family had practically become a household word. Richard Collins managed the group, getting bookings all over the country, almost every weekend. He was also a great friend and knew the family needed some "down-time" now and then. That's why he had made arrangements for the Preston's to stay in a huge beachfront cottage while they were on tour in New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland. Catherine Preston smiled at her first-born child. She was blond and blue-eyed, just the opposite of her son. At 18, Kendall was the spitting image of his late father. Greg Preston had died unexpectedly in a car accident 5 years ago. "Yes," she replied to Kendall’s question, "Richie did hire help, but she won't be here until 10 this morning. So, I thought I would get breakfast ready today. Do you have any special plans for today?" "Not really," Kendall said. "Lindsey and I might head over to the mall and see what's up. Chet said that he and his friends hang out at a pizza place in the mall. Maybe we'll see him there and he can show us around." "Chet seems very nice." Catherine added as she scooped scrambled eggs into a large bowl. They were both referring to the chubby, blond boy who had been waiting at the cottage for them to arrive. Chet's father, Mr. Morton, had recently bought and refurbished the old cottage for tourists and the Prestons were his first renters. "Chet told me there was going to be a party on the beach tonight," stated a chestnut haired beauty as she strode into the kitchen. Lindsey's hair was tastefully French braided down her back. She was wearing a sleeveless, white, button-down blouse and a denim scooter skirt. Her blue eyes sparkled as she greeted her mother and brother. "Sounds like fun," Kendall said at the news of a party. "It might give us a chance to meet some people our age around here." "Did I hear someone say 'party'?" sounded 11-year-old Denny Preston, his twin brother Davy, at his side. "Not for you squirts!" answered Kendall, causing Denny and Davy to wrinkle their matching freckle-covered noses and sticking out their tongues in Kendall's direction. Across town on the corner of High and Elm, another set of siblings was also going through their morning routine. Frank Hardy quietly opened the door into his brother's bedroom. Joe was enjoying the extra time in bed this morning. He had gotten in late the previous night after dropping off his girlfriend Vanessa Bender and her mom at the airport. Vanessa would be in Europe all summer with her mother, so Joe was feeling pretty low when he got home near 1 a.m. Frank silently moved toward the form buried beneath the comforter on Joe's bed. He knew that Joe was probably feeling down because of missing Vanessa, so he wanted to greet him in a way to get Joe charged. Frank gently lifted the edge of the blanket. He could see Joe's bare foot and with a huge grin on his face, Frank pulled out the feather he had found and began tickling Joe's most ticklish spot. "A-a-ah!" shouted blond, blue-eyed 17-year-old Joe as he rolled off the bed. Frank, a year older and inch taller than his brother, ran toward the bedroom door. He almost made it when Joe's 180 pound's of muscle crashed Frank to the floor. "O.K.," Frank cried, knowing what was coming, "I give up!" Now Joe had the upper hand as he straddled his brother's waist, looking into Frank's warm, brown eyes. A mischievous grin spread across Joe Hardy’s face as he realized how terrified his brother was of the impending punishment he was about to inflict. Soon tears were streaming down the sides of Frank's face as Joe mercilessly tickled his older brother. Joe had little trouble keeping Frank from moving as he had Frank's arms safely pinned beneath his own knees. "Had enough?" Joe smiled. "Get off me you big lug!" Frank cried as Joe eased off his brother. Joe turned back toward the bed. Frank, though leaner than Joe, took advantage of the situation and tackled Joe back to the floor. Before Frank could seek vengeance, their mother called from the bottom of the steps. "You two had better break it up before you both end up crashing through the floor!" called pretty, petite Laura Hardy. Her blond hair and deep blue eyes matched those of her younger son. She looked far too young to be the mother of the robust young men that soon came bounding into the kitchen. "Sorry Mom," apologized Frank, still wiping tears from his eyes. "I guess Joe won this round?" Mrs. Hardy said as she caught Frank's attempt to catch a stray tear. "Only because you saved his sorry hide by calling us!" retorted Frank with a smile. "I was only getting even!" Joe added, "He tickled my foot with a feather!" Mrs. Hardy smiled as she placed heaping plates of steaming bacon and eggs in front of the boys. The boys discussed their plans for the day, which included meeting their father, world-famous private detective Fenton Hardy, at the airport. He would be returning from a case that had him working undercover in Egypt. The boys were excited about the case he had just closed and couldn't wait to hear all the details. Like their father, the Hardy boys had a special ability to solve mysteries and hoped to one day be detectives, too. Meanwhile, they stayed busy helping their dad when they could, as well as taking on several cases of their own. "Let's go hang out at the mall 'til we have to pick up Dad," suggested Joe, as he put his empty plate in the dishwasher. "There's a new video game at the arcade I haven't tried out yet." Frank wrinkled his nose and shook his head, causing a brown lock to fall across his forehead. He ran his fingers through his hair in an attempt to fix it, a habit he was often caught doing. "I’ll go to the mall with you, but I want to pick up a new modem for the computer I'm building for Callie's cousin Candi." Frank stated. He was the more serious of the two brothers, enjoying work on computers, classical music, history and fine art. "I forgot about Callie's cousin coming this summer." Joe reflected, "I wonder what she looks like?" Frank smiled. Unlike himself, Joe was much more outgoing. He was warm and friendly, especially when it involved a girl. Frank was used to girls asking him if his brother was "attached" to anyone special. Joe seemed to attract girls like a magnet. The brothers kissed their mother goodbye and headed out to their van. * * * "Hey Frank! Joe! What's up?" came a shout from inside Mr. Pizza. Frank and Joe made their way in toward a group of familiar faces in the corner. Their pal Chet Morton was waving his hand at the brothers. "Hey gang!" Frank said with a smile, then turned to a pretty blond girl, "Hello Callie!" Callie Shaw, Frank's girlfriend since 9th grade, reached up and pulled Frank into the seat next to her. "How are you, Handsome?" she said with a smile, then squeezed his hand. Frank blushed. Callie greeted Joe with a warm hello. Joe sat next to Biff Hooper, his best friend, next to his brother Frank. Biff, who never used his given name Allen, was 6' 2" and 190 pounds of muscle. Biff and Joe often worked out on the weight room equipment in the Hardy’s basement He, Frank, Joe and Chet all played on Bayport High's football team. Frank would be starting quarterback this fall and with Joe and Biff as his receivers, and Chet working as a defensive end, they were sure they could take the state title this year. The boys also played on the baseball team along with two other friends, Phil Cohen and Tony Prito, who worked at the pizza place they were in. Tony was working and came over to take their orders. After all the greetings were made and pizzas' were ordered, Chet turned to Frank with a mysterious look. "Did you tell him yet?" Chet asked. Joe caught the exchange and frowned. Was Frank keeping a secret from him? "Not yet." replied Frank, "Actually, I thought I'd leave that honor to you, Chet. After all, it was your idea." "What idea? What's going on?" asked Joe, still frowning. He suddenly realized that everyone else at the table was smiling and looking at him. "Well, Joe ol' buddy, ol' pal..." started Chet, "You are going to love me! You are going to want to shine my shoes for the rest of my life! You are going to want to wax 'Queen' every weekend! You are even going to want to do my algebra homework for me..." "Cut it, Chet!" Joe said, glaring at his friend, "Just get to the point and fill me in on what everyone else seems to know already!" Chet was about to continue when a voice interrupted their conversation. "Hi Chet! I was hoping we would find you hanging out here!" greeted Kendall Preston. Joe Hardy didn't even hear Kendall's greeting. His eyes were fixed on the most beautiful girl he had ever seen. He kept reminding his brain to tell his lungs to breathe because he wasn't sure he was breathing anymore. Then, as if it couldn't get worse, she looked at Joe and smiled a dazzling smile. Joe put his hand to his chest to see if his heart was still beating. Meanwhile, Chet was busy making introductions as Kendall and Lindsey sat down. Lindsey's hand brushed Joe's shoulder as she sat and she turned to apologize. Joe, suddenly coming out of a near-heart attack, realized she had spoken and gave her his best smile. For the first time in his life, he couldn't think of anything to say, so he just kept smiling and squeezed Biff over to give Lindsey more room. Frank shook his head as he watched Joe's reaction to Lindsey Preston. She was very pretty and from the way Joe was looking, he would be in love before they left the table. "Lindsey," Frank said, "The comatose, smiling beast beside you is my baby brother, Joe. Joe this is Lindsey and Kendall Preston." Somewhere in the back of Joe's brain, it suddenly clicked. This was Lindsey Preston! THE Lindsey Preston of the Preston Family singers! AND, she was sitting next to HIM!
