CHAPTER 11

"But I don’t have any female relatives!" Laura Hardy cried as she gazed at the picture of Catherine Preston.

With their mother’s words echoing in their heads the next morning, Frank and Joe drove to see Mrs. Preston. Frank rapped lightly on the door. Mrs. Preston came to the door wearing a pink, knit blouse and a white skirt, making her appear far too young to be the mother of teenagers.

"Hello, boys," she greeted Frank and Joe warmly, "You missed the kids. They were getting ‘cabin fever’, so Richie took them to a music museum in Southport."

"That’s O.K.," Frank said, "Actually, Joe and I wanted to talk with you, Mrs. Preston."

Catherine gave the boys a quizzical look, but opened the door and invited them to join her at the table. She served them each a glass of fresh iced tea before sitting down.

"Now gentlemen," she said, "To what do I owe this pleasure?"

Frank and Joe exchanged a quick glance, and Frank knew he was to start. "Mrs. Preston," he began, "It’s obvious that you and your family have recognized a strong resemblance between yourself and Joe. Even more startling, is how much you look like our mother."

With that statement said, Joe pulled out his wallet. He removed a family photo taken at Christmas. "Here is a recent picture of our family," Joe said as he handed the photo to Catherine.

In the foreground of the picture was Joe sitting cross-legged on the floor, with Frank kneeling on one knee beside him. Directly behind Frank was an older version of himself. The older man was standing with his left hand on Frank’s shoulder and his right hand on the shoulder of a woman, seated in a chair behind Joe. The pretty, blond woman was definitely their mother. She and Joe had the same hair, eyes and warm smile.

Catherine’s hand moved to the base of her throat as she gazed at the photo. ‘How can two strangers look so much alike?’ she thought.

"I’m sure that Kendall or Lindsey have told you that our father, Fenton Hardy, is a private detective," Frank said as he watched Mrs. Preston’s reaction to the photo. He continued, "Joe and I have inherited a bit of Dad’s detecting talents..."

"...And with your permission," picked up Joe where Frank left off, "we’d like to do some checking into your background to see if there is any way possible that you and Mom could be related."

"We’ll be investigating our mom’s background as well," added Frank.

"I think that’s a great idea," said Kendall Preston, walking into the back door.

"I do too," added Lindsey, following her brother.

"I do three," quipped Richie Collins as he joined the group in the kitchen, "and I don’t even know what you’re talking about!" He than told Catherine the twins were playing on the beach.

Frank, Joe and Catherine filled the newly arrived threesome in on what they had been discussing. They also passed around the Hardy family photo.

"So, Frank," inquired Kendall, "What’s your plan?"

"Well," Frank began, "It’s going to take both research and leg-work to find any connection between our mothers. We’ll have to start from their births, or even before that, if one of them was adopted. We’ll have to check hospital records, birth records, and..."

"How are you going to cover all that ground?" asked Richie.

"We’ll have to split up into two teams," Frank continued, "I’ll take either Lindsey or Kendall and the other will go with Joe."

"I’m game," said Lindsey, "Maybe we can visit Granddad and Grandma in Alcott, New York. That’s where you were born, right Mom?"

"Yes," replied Catherine, "I can call them and tell them why you’re coming so they can be prepared to answer any questions you might come up with. Maybe Joe should go with Lindsey. If my parents see him, they’ll understand about the resemblance."

"Sounds like the start of a plan!" said Joe excitedly. Nothing got Joe’s adrenaline pumped like a new mystery to solve.

The Hardys and the Prestons decided that Joe and Lindsey would drive the Hardy’s van to Alcott, about 5 hours away. Frank and Kendall would contact the Hardy’s friend, Jack Wayne, a hot-shot, young pilot who often worked for their father. Jack could fly them to Boston where their mother was born and where her two of her brothers, Mark and Mike, still lived.

No one in the group noticed the small figure crouched near the screen door, listening to every word.
