CHAPTER 17

The terrain below the plane was all beginning to look the same. Patches of rock face, some still covered with snow, scrawny pine trees and a few grassy areas. ‘Where could that plane be?’ Frank Hardy questioned for at least the twentieth time.

The sun was low in the sky and Frank knew they would soon lose light and the search would be called off until the morning. Jack Wayne looked at Frank’s worried face and rubbed his chin thoughtfully.

"Frank," Jack said, "Let me take the helm for a bit. You grab the binoc’s and keep your eyes peeled. We’ll criss-cross one more time before calling it a day."

Joe Hardy was completely exhausted. He had eaten the second half of his protein bar earlier, hoping it would give him some energy and strength. It had, but not as much as seeing his dad’s dark brown eyes staring at him. Joe had made pretty good headway after that, but physically, he was now feeling too drained.

Joe came to a stop in the middle of the ravine, trying to calculate the best path up the other side to the cabin. He sat down beside the life raft that held his father. Joe carefully poured some of the melted snow from the canteen into his father’s mouth, and then took a long swallow himself. As he was capping the canteen, Joe heard a loud humming. He glanced up and saw a blue and white striped plane flying directly overhead. Joe tried to get to his feet to flag the plane, but fell hard on his injured thigh. He winced as he saw fresh blood coming from the wound. The plane disappeared. Joe Hardy collapsed against the life raft sobbing.

"Jack! We’ve got to pass over this area again!" Frank Hardy shouted, practically jumping out of his seat to peer through the window in an attempt to look behind them. "I think I saw something!"

"You think you saw something, Buddy or you did see something?" Jack Wayne replied anxiously, "’Cause we’re way low on fuel and I don’t want to risk running on empty if you just think you saw something."

"I saw something back there that didn’t belong on the side of a mountain, okay?" Frank answered, not believing that he had to convince Jack to turn around. "We’ve got to go back there now!"

"Okay, okay," the pilot said as he began banking left to circle around again, "I sure hope you’re right!"

Joe Hardy knew he was running out of daylight and he had already run out of energy. The plane flying over was a devastating blow emotionally. With a sigh, Joe resolved to reach the cabin. He put every ounce of strength he had left into pulling the life raft bearing his unconscious father up the far side of the ravine.

Scooting on his backside, Joe pulled the raft up the snow-covered bank with one arm. He had just reached the crest of the bank with the raft when he heard the plane again. Joe glanced upward, only to realize that the plane couldn’t see him from here among the pine trees. Forgetting his pain and exhaustion, Joe slid back down the bank of the ravine.

He spotted the plane and knew it was the same one that had passed by earlier. He began waving his good arm, wishing he had something to signal with... the pocket flashlight! He pulled out the small flashlight and began an S.O.S. signal, flashing the light on and off.

The plane tipped it’s wing slightly before disappearing beyond Joe’s vision. ‘Did he dip his wing to let me know he saw me?’ Joe wondered hopefully. "Please God," Joe prayed out loud, "Let them find us soon!" Joe slowly and painfully made his way back up the ravine bank.

"There! Jack! Someone’s down there!" Frank cried, wanting the plane to stand still so he could tell if the person was his dad or Joe. Jack Wayne peered out the window and caught a glimpse of a small, barely noticeable light flashing on and off.

"Say hey, Dude," Jack stated, "is that an S.O.S. signal?"

"YES!" Frank replied, counting the dots and dashes the flashes of light represented.

"Radio the tower and give them...Wait! Listen!" Jack shouted. A soft beeping sound was coming from the small radar screen Jack had installed as part of a tracing system for his planes. He had installed the same devices in Mr. Hardy’s plane.

"That’s the tracing system on your dad’s plane!" Jack cried, "Wahoo! We found the plane Frank! Now radio the tower with our position!"

"Yes, Sir," Frank replied in a mock salute, smiling for the first time in days.
