“They’re all right?
You’re sure it’s my boys, right?” Fenton felt a weight lift
off his shoulders. He had been calling the local police every half hour.
“Thank you! Yes,
Officer, we’ll pick them up at Mercy
Hospital.
Thank you, again.”
Mr. Hardy quickly explained to the three
women that Frank and Joe were both fine.
He told them about the Curtis family and that they had taken both
boys to the closest hospital to be checked out.
Fenton, Laura, Vanessa and Callie climbed
into the rented SUV and drove to the hospital, relieved and very grateful.
* * *
Two weeks later, completely recovered from
their ordeal, Frank and Joe drove their van back up to the Adirondack
Mountains
.
They pulled up in front of a small, modest
two-story house. Down in front
of a grassy, sloped yard, a small creek gurgled slowly past.
During their brief stay in the Curtis
home, the very observant Hardy brothers made some mental notes, and after
their recovery, they went shopping.
Frank gave Joe a brief grin as he knocked
on the door. The door swung
open and Grace Curtis grabbed both the boys in a warm hug.
“Thank the Lord!” Grace exclaimed.
“You both look just fine. Yes,
mighty fine.” The Hardys
chuckled and followed Grace into the living room, where they greeted
George and James.
After questioning Frank and Joe about
their recovery, Grace served them all cookies and hot chocolate.
Joe glanced at Frank and raised his eyebrows slightly.
Frank understood and he stood and retrieved a package he’d set
beside the front door as they came in.
“We, ah, Joe and I,” Frank began,
“wanted to thank you again for saving our lives and looking after us
like you did.”
“As a token of our thanks,” Joe picked
up, “we have a little gift for each of you.”
The Hardys passed three wrapped packages around the table.
“Go on,” Joe urged, “open them.”
George and James tore off their wrappings
quickly. Each had received a
new fishing tackle box, complete with a supply of hooks, lures, bobbers
and other essentials.
“Alright!” the Curtis brothers
exclaimed in unison. They
thanked the Hardys and began exploring the contents of each tackle box.
Grace smiled at her sons’ enthusiasm,
and then turned to the two young men in front of her. ‘I do believe
I’ve met two brothers that are just as close to each other as my
boys,’ she thought.
“You didn’t have to do that,” Grace
said. “We weren’t doing
anything to be thanked or rewarded.”
“We wanted to; besides, it was the least
we could do,” Frank said sincerely, locking eyes with the woman.
“You haven’t opened yours, yet,” Joe
smiled at Grace.
She returned his smile and carefully
unwrapped the package before her. She
pulled the small appliance from the box.
“Is this an indoor grill?” she asked,
beaming.
Joe nodded, “We figured, after George
and James catch all those fish, you’d need something to cook them on.
“Anyway,” the younger Hardy continued
with a twinkle in his blue eyes. “They already proved what great
fishermen they are,” he looked mischievously at Frank, “when they
didn’t let this big one get
away!”
