“Well?” Joe prodded. “Aren’t you going to look at it?”

Frank felt the smooth leather underneath his fingertips and looked down at his gift, before returning his gaze to his brother.

“I can’t,” he responded at length. “It’s too dark to see.”

Joe laughed. “Yeah, I guess you have a point there. But maybe the moon will come out and you can look at it then.”

Frank tilted his head up and looked at the sky. “No snow,” He whispered suddenly.

“Hmmm?”

“No snow. The forecasters predicted snow, but the clouds have broken up.”

“The wind’s died down a bit too,” Joe agreed. “Although it’s still frightfully cold.”

“Joe?”

“Hmmm?”

“How is it that you had my gift with you? It doesn’t feel like anything you would normally buy in a store.”

Frank couldn’t be certain, but he thought his brother had suddenly blushed.

“It’s not something you usually find in a store,” the younger boy murmured in agreement.

Frank waited patiently for his brother to continue.

“It’s something I had bound in leather for you. The bookstore arranged for me to have it sent out. It just came in today. I couldn’t let you see it, so I stuck it in my pocket.”

“Good thing, too,” Joe added a minute later.

“What is it?” Frank asked, his curiosity getting the better of him.

“You remember that art class I took with Mr. Porter last year?” Joe queried in turn.

“A little,” Frank answered. “I seem to recall that you enjoyed it, and did pretty well, too.”

“I did enjoy it,” Joe confirmed.

Suddenly Frank began to understand. “You mean you drew something for me?”

“One of our assignments was to create a series of images that held some personal meaning for us.” Joe went on without addressing Frank’s question.

The blond boy continued, “Anyway, this semester, Mr. Porter approached me and asked if he could enter my series in a regional art contest. He thought that they were that good.” Joe’s voice held a trace of amazement that anyone could think that of his work.

“And?” Frank prodded. He had seen some of his brother’s artwork; it didn’t surprise him at all that the teacher would think highly of it.

Joe beamed at his brother. “It won top prize. Mr. Porter told me last month.”

“Joe, that’s wonderful!” Frank exclaimed happily.

“I thought it would make a decent present for you, since it had won an award,” Joe stated shyly. “So I had it bound.”

Just then the moon slipped out from behind a bank of clouds, shedding a feeble light on the frigid earth.

Frank eagerly glanced down at the book in his hand, and opened it, gasping in surprise. Slowly, he turned page after page in amazed silence.

“My series was on brothers,” Joe said quietly. “So I drew or painted pictures of some of my most favorite memories with you.”

“Thank you, Joe,” Frank was finally able to say.

“You’re welcome Frank,” Joe whispered, as he laid his head on top of his brother’s. It was so bitterly cold. “Merry Christmas.”

Frank reached up and ran a finger through his brother’s bright hair, so frightfully cold.

“Merry Christmas, Joe,” he said softly, letting his hand drop back into the warm cocoon he was in. Clutching his gift tight to his chest, he snuggled closer to his brother. Maybe Joe was right, he mused sleepily. Maybe this was a merry Christmas after all.

Soon the exhausted and chilled brothers fell asleep, blanketed by the cold.
