Eighteen-year old Frank Hardy strode down the hallway to his chemistry class, the final class of the day. As he entered the room, he looked over at the tall, blonde girl who called out a welcome. “Hi,” seventeen-year old Vanessa Bender greeted her boyfriend’s brother. Although a year behind Frank in her studies, the girl was passionate about science and had been placed in the college-prep chemistry class with the older students. “Hey, Van,” the dark-haired boy answered with a grin. “Frank! Just wait until you see this!” Vanessa gushed enthusiastically, as she slipped a folded piece of paper out of her notebook. Frank peered over at the paper, noting that it was discolored with age and rather fragile. “It says it’s a secret formula for invisible ink,” Vanessa declared happily. “I found it in my bag the other day. Look, the ingredients are common enough . . . well most of them are, anyway.” The girl giggled as she added: “We could mix it up and threaten Joe with it or something.” “Sure, why not,” Frank responded with a casual shrug. “It couldn’t hurt.” He reached out for the page to better read the list of ingredients. “But what’s this?” he asked aloud, pointing to an item about half-way down the slip of paper. Vanessa peered over his shoulder, squinting as she followed Frank’s finger to a word that was swallowed in half by a tear in the paper. “I don’t know,” she stated, “but I’m sure it’s not that important.” Before Frank could respond, the bell sounded and he hastened into his own seat. “After class,” he muttered quickly to Vanessa, who nodded once before opening her chemistry book to the appropriate page. The class passed swiftly, and as the final bell of the day echoed throughout the halls, Frank stood up from his seat and joined Vanessa at her lab table. “See,” the girl began, “we have everything we need right here. We could make up the invisible ink now and show it to Callie and Joe as soon as we’ve finished.” Vanessa’s warm gray eyes brightened at the thought of her boyfriend and best friend. “It shouldn’t take but a minute or two.” Frank nodded his approval, and soon the two were scurrying around the chemistry lab for the requisite ingredients. Once most of the ingredients had been found and brought back to the lab table, they quickly set about mixing the potion. Vanessa had just finished swirling a milky-white substance around in the beaker and had just stepped over to the counter to pour it into a tube, when she unexpectedly lost her balance, pouring the liquid all over Frank. Straightening back up, Vanessa began to apologize. “Oh, Frank!” She exclaimed, “I’m ever so-” The girl’s voice broke off with a startled gasp as she finally looked over at Frank. The dark-haired boy was rapidly disappearing right before her very eyes! *** Tall, blond Joe Hardy quickly scanned the students clustered at various tables throughout the library. Spying his elder brother’s girlfriend, he wound his way back to join her. “Hi,” He said brightly to brown-eyed, blonde Callie Shaw, who smiled back up at him. Taking a seat across from her, he asked, “Where are the others?” The girl gave an exquisite shrug of the shoulders and half-shook her head. “I don’t know. They should have been here by now.” The two had planned to meet Frank and Vanessa in the library to discuss one of Callie’s proposed research topics on the paranormal. After Callie’s last foray into the world of the unknown resulted in a good deal of unpleasant experiences for all of them, the others insisted that they have a say whenever the girl was gripped by a new obsession. As it was, Frank had strictly forbidden her to ever wish for anything anywhere within a hundred-mile radius of a magic lamp. Just then, they saw Joe’s girlfriend, Vanessa Bender, enter the library. Joe stood up and waved to the girl, and the two at the table watched as she drew near. Something about the way the girl moved alerted Joe. He wasn’t sure what exactly, but he had a sudden hunch that something was wrong. Vanessa greeted them with a strained smile as she carefully pulled out a chair next to Callie. Then, placing her books in the center of the table, she hurried around to the seat by Joe’s side and dropped into it. Callie and Joe watched her, mystified. Callie looked over at the blond boy as if in question. Joe, equally puzzled, quickly shook his head. He had no explanation for Vanessa’s odd behavior. Joe glanced back at the door, expecting at anytime to see his brother. “So….where’s Frank?” Joe at length asked his blonde girlfriend. Vanessa flashed the other two a nervous smile. Okay, the girl thought, you can do this. Joe can’t really get that upset about it, she consoled herself silently as Callie and Joe awaited her answer. Yes, she answered herself a second later. He very well could.
