Joe waited silently for a minute before he asked again. Still Frank didn’t respond. “Frank? Are you okay?” Joe asked in alarm. He relaxed as he felt Frank gently squeeze his hand. “Maybe he doesn’t know how to tell us what he wants us to look at,” suggested Callie. Frank beamed at his girlfriend although she couldn’t see it. He quickly signaled his agreement. Joe smiled. “Alright. So, Frank wants us to look at something, something he would point to if we could see him. “Yes,” squeezed Frank. The teens glanced about them in contemplation. Callie’s eyes fell on the piece of paper in front of her. “So let’s start with the formula,” she decided. Joe suddenly laughed. “Calm down, big brother! I can read you loud and clear.” Turning to the girls he stated: “He wants us to look at the formula.” Placing his index finger by the first ingredient, Joe told his brother: “I’ll just move my finger down this list, squeeze when I point to what you want to show us.” The girls watched as Joe slowly moved his finger down the page. When he got to the word where the tear in the paper was, Vanessa gave a little gasp at the same moment that Frank signaled his brother to stop. “I remember now!” The brown-eyed girl exclaimed. “Frank and I wondered what that ingredient was. We couldn’t tell, so decided to go on without it.” “You mean that you didn’t follow the formula exactly?” Callie asked in excitement, suddenly comprehending what might have gone wrong. “Well, all but that. We couldn’t tell what it was, so decided to skip it.” Frank too had determined that the missing ingredient had to be the key to his current predicament. Although elated at his recent success, Frank chafed at the limitations to the code the brothers had created. He desperately wanted to tell Joe his line of reasoning. As it was, he could only stand by and hope one of the other three would reason along similar lines, signaling his assent whenever possible. “So, you’re thinking that by omitting this ingredient, you altered the invisible ink potion enough to make it an invisible person potion,” the younger boy stated slowly. Callie and Frank nodded eagerly, before Frank suddenly remembered no one could see him and squeezed his brother’s hand instead. “So,” Vanessa said thoughtfully, “We need to determine what that ingredient is supposed to be.” She fell silent for a moment before shaking her head. “But how will that help us to make Frank visible again?” She, Callie and Joe exchanged bleak looks. Frank let go of his brother’s hand and returned to his seat. He placed his hand over one of Callie’s to let her know he was there. “He’s back over here now,” she said softly. Joe dutifully swiveled to face his invisible brother. “So what do we do now?” Callie asked. “Well, I don’t know about you,” Vanessa stated, “But it’s getting late and I had better be heading home.” Home! Joe jumped at the word as if struck by lightening. He cast an anxious glance at the empty seat across from him. He hadn’t even thought of the difficulties this would present at home. Callie shot him a compassionate glance. “I guess it might get a bit tricky for you when you get home.” “Yeah,” Joe responded miserably. “Auntie G is visiting, and she wanted to get a family portrait done.” “Tonight?” Vanessa asked in dismay. “Tonight,” confirmed Joe. “She and Mom are leaving tomorrow morning for a retreat at a resort spa and by the time they return Dad is expected to testify in Colorado.” The blue-eyed boy glanced at Frank’s seat and grimaced. “Auntie said the appointment at the studio is at six o’clock.” Vanessa glanced at her watch. “It’s almost a quarter to five, now,” she murmured.
