Frank and Joe stood in the deserted high-school parking lot. The wrecker was just pulling out onto the street. The younger brother had assured the driver of the tow truck that someone would come and pick him up; there was no reason to explain to the man that there were actually two teens there when he could only see one. Once the truck’s taillights vanished from sight, Joe turned to his brother. “I guess we walk.” Frank signaled his agreement. “But we can’t get home too early. We have, oh-” he glanced at his watch and frowned, “three to four hours to kill at least, if we want to sneak in without explanations.” He looked at his brother, or at least he hoped he did, and shrugged his shoulders. “Where to? Any preferences?” Frank did not signal, just kept his hand on his brother’s back. “How ‘bout the park?” Joe suggested after awhile. His brother quickly signaled his assent. Together, they walked through the silent streets to the moonlit park. *** Vanessa Bender studied the worn piece of paper intently, desperately searching for some clue as to the identity of the missing ingredient. She had already devoted most of the evening to this task, but without success. Dispirited, the girl placed the paper on her desk and leaned back into her chair. “It wouldn’t do you any good if you found out what that ingredient was, anyway,” a voice spoke suddenly behind her. “So there’s no real point in even looking.” The girl jumped out of her seat and whirled to face this unknown intruder into her room. She relaxed a bit to recognize the former genie, Ali, sitting on the edge of her bed. “How’d you get in here?” she asked, still unnerved. Ali nodded to the piece of paper on the desk. “That.” Vanessa looked down at the paper and then back up at Ali, her face a mask of confusion. “What does that,” she pointed to the formula, “have to do with you being in my room? Uninvited, I might add.” Ali tilted his head at her and regarded her thoughtfully. “You don’t know?” he questioned at last. “No, I don’t know,” the blonde girl snapped. “If I did, I wouldn’t have asked you.” “Sit down,” Ali suggested. “It’s a bit complicated.” Vanessa resumed her seat at her desk, her chair swiveled to face the dark-eyed boy. The former genie leaned forward and began his explanation. *** Frank and Joe were perched on the monkey bars in the children’s playground section of the park. At least Joe assumed his brother was sitting beside him; it was rather difficult to be certain given the circumstances. The playground, of course, was deserted; the full moon silvering the area with its subdued light. The night was cold; it was late November, but neither brother wanted to hazard returning home just yet. “This just stinks.” Joe stated dejectedly. He felt his brother’s feather-light touch against his back. The blond boy was relieved to know that he had been correct in his assumption. “First you becoming invisible,” Joe looked at where he believed Frank’s face to be, “and then the van.” He sighed. Despite the fact that he had approved of the idea and it had worked, the damage done to the van bothered him. Now Frank rubbed his brother’s back soothingly; a gesture from childhood that needed no words to convey the older boy’s sympathy. Out of a lifetime habit, Joe looked over his shoulder to smile at his brother. Suddenly he gave a little gasp as a gleam of delight appeared in his eyes. “Frank!” he cried out. “I can almost just see you!” Frank blinked in astonishment and looked down at his body. He too gave a little gasp as he too, could almost just see himself. Joe leaned closer to his brother and peered into the older boy’s eyes. “I can.” He whispered excitedly. “I can almost see you!” Frank grabbed his brother’s hand and squeezed tight. Suddenly Joe’s cell phone chimed. The younger boy glanced down at the screen and saw that it was his girlfriend. He grinned at Frank, “Maybe this is more good news!”
