CHAPTER 17

"I bet my mother is going to ring my neck by now," Adam said as they were making their way back to Christine's house. It was very late and Adam had to admit that he was irresponsible about keeping track of time. But time was a hard thing for him to judge anymore.

"But it is not your fault that her battery is low. I would say that Nathan is going to be the same. I get so sick of his mouth sometimes," Christine muttered. "I will call her from my house to let her know that you are on the way."

"I would appreciate that. I try not to worry them, but I just goof up more these days. If Jason is home, he will be all over me," Adam added as he turned onto Cabin Road, the road that led to Christine's road.

"I know that Jason hates me and rightfully so. I caused a lot of trouble between you too, but I know that he cares about you. I wish someone cared about me in that way," Christine said sadly. "I am also sorry about Alyssa. I hope that you two can make up. You really do care about her."

Adam smiled at the thought of Alyssa. "Yeah, I do. No other girl on earth has made me feel the way she makes me feel. I am sure that after everything is explained that things will be fine." He did not want Christine to know that Alyssa knew about everything.

"I am happy for you and if she doesn't take you back, then it will be her loss for sure. You are special Adam," Christine said, looking out the window. "I promise that I will make things right."

Adam never said anything, but the two now friends rode in silence. A silence of understanding and knowing those things was going to be straightened out.

Coming around the corner, Adam saw a familiar sight. His brother was standing by the boys' van with the hood up. He pulled over to see what was going on and was updated on the night's events. Adam also had Christine level with Jacob and Chuck about her part in the caper.

"So what are we going to do?" Christine whined. Tears were forming in her eyes. "I can't believe Nathan would endanger us like this."

"I don't think Nathan knows that he has pushed it too far to be honest," Jason answered. He did not like Christine, but he was not into seeing anyone losing his or her life. The four stood there for a moment in silence, thinking of their next move.

"You said that these people have killed before, right?" Adam finally asked.

"Yes," both Christine and Jason said at the same time.

"I overheard Windell on the phone one night talking about it. He thought that I was asleep. They are good at what they do because murder is never even suspected by the authorities," Christine reported to the group. "Some of them are former military people even, but I don't know any names. I just heard him mention that in the conversation."

Again, the group stood in silence until Jason spoke up. "Well the first thing we need to do is call Dad."

He looked over at Adam for a response, but Adam was looking down the road.

"What are you thinking about?" Jason asked, eyeing his brother's behavior.

"I have an idea," Adam said, biting his lip.

"Oh boy, here we go!" Chuck spouted as he rolled his eyes.

"If these people are killers, then they need to be stopped before anyone else is killed. We can..." Adam started in with his plan, but Jason cut him off.

"Oh no! You are not going to that house. No way, it is just too dangerous," Jason said, crossing his arms. Christine nodded in agreement with Jason.

"Well I hate to tell you this, but the cell phone is dead in this area. We would have to go up on the ridge to get a hold of your dad," Chuck said, putting the cell phone back into Jason's hand. "We are going to have to come up with our own plan until the sheriff gets here."

"Jason, we have to do this. We need to get these people put away. They will just chase us down anyway. I would rather have the upper hand instead of not knowing where they are and what they are up to," Adam commented. But Jason was not giving in.

"I am not going to let you go into a snake den like that. That is the final word," Jason said with a stern voice.

"I thought we were supposed to be a team? If that is so, how do you have the final word in this?" Adam fired back. He got the sense that his brother did not trust his abilities as a partner.

"Because I am the oldest and I am not going to take any chances with you," Jason came back at him.

"What would make you think that I would let you go in there? They are looking for Christine and me, not you. I am sure that they are watching the house and will know the difference. Then it will all blow up," Adam said, leaning up against the car. "I have to go in. We need to stop these killers."

"You will not be able to stop them if you are a victim!" Jason retorted. Adam stood straight up and walked up to Jason.

He stood face to face with his older brother. "Remember when Randall died. Tarah and her goons killed him and we brought them to justice. We owed that to Randall and his family. Don't you think that all of the people they have killed deserve the same justice? I owe it to them."

Jason just frowned.

"And remember when you said that I was not a quitter, that is what made me Adam Kramer. Well now you are asking me to be a quitter," Adam said, putting his finger into his older brother's chest. "You used to trust my abilities. Now I am not so sure."

Jason sighed and turned from his brother.

"Now you can either stand here and wait for the sheriff or help me nail these guys once and for all. You know that they are going to see the sheriff coming, they won't suspect us," Adam stated. He was determined that they were going to pull this off.

Jason stood there for a minute. He was in deep thought, but Adam was too impetuous.

"Fine, I am going in," Adam said as he spun around.

"No you are not," Jason said as Adam felt a strong hand grip his shoulder. "Not without a plan."

Adam smiled and gave his brother a pat on the shoulder. Jason was not crazy about the way things were turning out, but Adam had a point. They had to face it head on or they would be possibly stalked.

"I think that the best thing we can do is get in there and let Nathan know what is going on. Chuck and I will ride in the very back. I would take a guess that they have maybe only two or three people doing this job. It is really a small job when you think about it. They will not think of someone coming up from behind them out here. We will have to take them out one by one. Adam, you remember the signals right?" Jason asked.

"You bet I do," Adam said.

"If things go wrong, get out of there," Jason said with a stern voice. "Also, everyone will need to stay calm and keep their wit. No panicking."

After reviewing the plan again, Adam opened the door for Christine and Chuck went through the driver door and into the hatchback area.

"Good Lord it is small back here!" Chuck exclaimed as he went over the backseat to the far back.

Jason stopped in front of Adam. "You be careful. Mom and Dad would kill me if something happened to you," he said as he patted Adam on the back.

"I love you too big brother," Adam whispered as Jason went in to start his climb to the back part of the car.

Adam got into the car and began the trip to Christine's house. No one was on the road and everything was silent as Adam pulled the Trans Am into the driveway. Both teenagers got out of the car and walked into the house. Christine immediately ran back to Nathan's bedroom. Before he could even mutter a word, she told him what was going on. He sat in his bed, looking up at Adam to make sure that it was not a dream. Adam assured him that Christine was not exaggerating a word. Unexpectedly, Nathan ran for the closet and pulled out a small handgun. He placed it in his back pocket of his jeans and threw on a shirt to cover it up. It made Adam uncomfortable that Nathan had a gun, but he did not want to start an argument. He knew that Nathan would not part with the weapon.

"Just don't shoot first and only shoot if you have to. We don't want to instigate things. They are experienced killers," Adam cautioned. Nathan at first glared at the younger Kramer, but then nodded in agreement.

"I am really sorry about this Christine. I just wanted to make a better life for us," Nathan said as he started to walk near the window. But Adam pulled him back.

"Don't go near any windows," Adam whispered to him.

"We will talk about that later Nathan. Right now we have more important things to worry about," Christine said as she said down beside the couch.

At that moment the front door busted open like a cannon had went off and two men dressed in black from head to toe came in brandishing guns. Christine's heart about jumped out of her chest as the men told the young people to stand up with their hands in full view.

"We have orders that you are expendable. It seems that you have been causing a little trouble and now we are here to exterminate," the one man mouthed off.

"Look, I am the one responsible here so just deal with me," Nathan said as he stepped forward, but the other man pushed him back.

"Too late. You wanted to be a hot shot. Well now you have to take the consequences of being out of your league little boy," the other man chided.

'It looks like there is going to be a couple of murders and a suicide. Don't you just hate that," the one man said, stepping closer to the three. "I am sorry young man, but it seems that you were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. You know too much so I will try to make it not as painful."

"I don't know anything. But you can leave and we would never say a word about any of this," Adam spoke up, stalling for time.

"I am afraid that I am paid too well to walk away now," the man jeered back. "So let's see who gets it first?"

" I think that the innocent boy should go first, protecting his girlfriend. That would be an honorable death. We can at least do that," the other man spouted off.

"That sounds good. Just hold still and this will be as painless as possible," the first man in black said as he leveled his gun right at Adam's head.
