CHAPTER 17

The gun went off, but Adam did not feel any pain. All he heard was Christine's screams and a scuffle in front of him. Jason had taken the two by surprise and knocked them both to the floor. Adam knew that they had to keep them down and get the guns.

"Stay here!" Adam yelled to Christine as Nathan sprang into action to help Jason. Adam was able to grab the one gun, but Nathan was still struggling with the other man for the second gun. Jason had successfully knocked the other man out cold when he tackled them. He apparently hit his head on the corner of the coffee table, breaking it into two pieces.

"We need something to tie them up with," Jason called out. Christine sprang up and went into the back part of the house. After a minute, she came out with three sets of handcuffs. She handed them to Jason, who looked at her quizzically.

"Don't ask, okay. But they are real and they do work so cuff him," She said with a firm voice. Jason did just that. Adam and Nathan were able to hold the other man down so Jason could cuff him as well. Then, before anyone could say anything, Nathan slammed the man's head into the hardwood floor. The man was out instantly.

"Why did you do that!" Jason yelled out. "We might have been able to see if there were anymore!"

"He just tried to kill us, that is why!" Nathan argued back. "He wouldn't have told us anything."

"Is it over? Are we safe now?" Christine asked timidly.

"I don't know. Chuck is watching the house. If he sees someone coming he will give us the signal. So you will need to be quiet," Jason stated to the group. "Let's just hope that is all of them. The sheriff should be here soon."

"I don't know about you, but I am not waiting around here for someone to come in and kill me again," Nathan spouted off. "I am getting out of here!"

"Nathan, NO!" Adam yelled, but Nathan was already barging out the door. He heard the screen door slam and a gunshot pierced the night's silence.

"NATHAN!" Christine cried as she ran for the door, but Adam stopped her. Jason crept over to the door and peered out. Nathan was lying on the ground and reaching back to his back. Then he pulled out his handgun and fired in the direction of the shot.

"Nathan, get back in here!" Jason called out. "Crawl back over here!"

"You are not my boss Jason," Nathan called back, waiting for return fire. "Come on you scaredy cat! Come and get us now! We are even now!" Nathan yelled out to the darkness.

At first there was silence, an uneasy silence. And then it all let loose. Gunshots showered the house, busting glass everywhere and littering the floor with shards of plaster and wood.

The three teenagers crawled to the back door.

"We have to get out of here! If they hit that propane tank on the side of the house or one of the cars, we are going to blow up with it!" Jason called back. Looking out the back door, he could tell that the wood line was only about 20 feet from them. He heard a familiar sound, the sound of a pigeon. It was Chuck and he was already across from them.

"We have to go and get up on the ridge. Once you get out of this house, you run and keep low!" Adam called out.

"How do we know that they are not up there waiting on us?" Christine asked. She was holding up pretty good, but fear was about to over take her.

"We just have to take that chance. The gunfire is coming from the front so let's hope we are right. It is our only chance. They have machine guns. We have no choice," Adam replied.

"What about Nathan? We just can't leave him," Christine asked again.

"You just worry about yourself and your baby. We will take care of Nathan," Adam answered. He was pretty mad at Nathan for starting the whole thing, but they did have to get to him. They got ready to make their mad dash for the woods.

"Adam, get Christine up there. I am going to sneak to the side and get Nathan," Jason said, staying low to the kitchen floor. Adam was about to protest when Jason spoke up again. "I trust you, now you have to trust me."

Adam put his arm on his brother's shoulder. "Be careful brother." Jason just nodded and ran to the side of the square shaped house. He motioned for Adam and Christine to go. Adam did just what his brother ordered. The couple dashed across the small opening to be met with Chuck. Adam handed Christine over to Chuck and told him to get her up the hill. Adam was going to wait on his brother to make sure that he was not in trouble.

Meanwhile, Jason had spotted Nathan. He called out to him to crawl over to the side of the house. Nathan did just as Jason asked and made his way carefully over to the backside of the house.

"I will hold them off," Nathan called out. "Just get my sister to safety."

"But you only have four more bullets!" Jason reminded him. Nathan ran back into the house and came out with the two guns that the men were using.

"I am fine, now go!" Nathan called out. "I am not leaving here until the cops get here. Let them think that this is where we are. I owe it to Christine and the baby. Just keep them safe. My dad taught me about shooting. I will be fine. The cops should be here soon."

Jason knew that Nathan was not going to budge, so he ran to join the others. The silence made him nervous. He was hoping that the shooter was not getting into a better position, or worse, coming in for the kill. The older Kramer ran and darted through the trees and brush until he ran right into something that jumped out in front of him.

Both bodies fell to the ground with a thud. Not wanting to give the stranger the upper hand, Jason sprang on top of it and pinned the shadow to the ground.

"It is me Jason!" Adam whispered. Jason let up on his grip.

"You are supposed to be up there!" Jason responded, helping his younger brother up.

"I was not going to leave you. Chuck and Christine should be up there by now. Where is Nathan?"

"He wanted to stay and hold the guy back. But I have a feeling that this silence is not good. We need to get away from the house."

Adam nodded in agreement and started through the brush quietly. It was not long before Adam and Jason were reunited with Chuck and Christine at the top of the ridge.

"We have to get away from the house. Let's keep moving," Jason said, but Christine would not budge from her spot.

"Where is Nathan?" she asked tearfully.

"He stayed down there to hold them off so you could get away safely," Jason answered.

"You left my brother down there!" Christine fired back at Jason. Her face had the look of pure terror and disbelief.

Jason walked up to her and looked her straight in the eye. "Look, he would not come and I am not going to stand down there and argue with him and risk all of our lives. Now we are going to keep moving and wait until help comes. We are outnumbered."

"So is Nathan," Christine remarked again.

"Nathan is old enough to take care of himself. Your baby is not. He wanted me to get you to safety and that is what I am going to do," Jason argued back. Christine eyed him and then remained silent. Chuck motioned for the group to follow him slowly through the thick brush. The teenagers quietly followed the ridge that almost surrounded the house. The night sky hid many secrets, and all of them were silent. Deathly silent, Adam thought. He had to admit the silence scared him.

Trudging quietly, but quickly the group made it to where they could see Nathan. His blacker than black figure was now in position behind the shed to the side of the house with his weapon read to fire. Jason made a face when he thought about how much jeopardy that Nathan had put them in by just using the gun. The brothers would not hesitate to use force if they had to, but this was not one of those times. The use of the gun made things worse and intensified the already bad situation.

"Please, can we stop for just a minute. I need to get my breath!" Christine whispered. Jason's look of dismay could be seen in the little bit of moonlight that lit up his face. Noticing the reaction to her request, Christine commented, "Well you don't have to carry another human being here. I might not be too far along, but I am pregnant!"

Jason almost forgot. Christine was not showing very much and she was holding up so well.

"Sorry about that Christine," Jason apologized. Christine nodded to acknowledge his comment and looked towards where her brother was situated. But her face turned from relieved to horror.

"NATHAN! WATCH OUT! HE IS BESIDE THE SHED!" she shouted at the top of his lungs. Her voiced echoed down the ridge and through the hollow. Gunshots pierced the night silence and the blacker than black shadow that was stationed behind the shed, dropped to the ground motionless.

"NATHAN!" Christine cried out and lunged in the direction of her fallen brother. But she was held back by Chuck and Adam. Going into hysterics, Christine fell apart. Adam grabbed her and held her close in his arms. Jason looked down at the site and then over to his brother. His heart ached for Christine because he knew that feeling. The feeling of losing a brother. But Jason was lucky. Adam came back to life. Nathan did not stand a chance and was probably shot dead right before their very eyes. Swallowing his emotions, Jason looked down and saw that Nathan was not the only person to hear Christine's cry. Their assailant did too and he was making his way up the slope right to them. Instinct kicked in as Jason herded the group on.

Moving as fast as they could, the group pressed on through the briars and thick brush. But the gunman was gaining on them. Before Jason had time to even turn his head to see the gunman's position; the gunman opened fire once again. It was like a scene from a war story. Christine was the first to fall. Chuck stopped in his tracks and fell off to the side of the trail, rolling down the slope a little. Jason looked over at his brother. Adam was dragging the fallen Christine, who was not in a state of shock and pure terror. She was screaming the fear out of her body, but the fear never left.

"I HAVE BEEN SHOT! OH LORD! I HAVE BEEN SHOT! PLEASE DON'T KILL US!" she shrieked over and over as Adam tried to get her to stand up. Shots fired again.

This time Adam fell with Christine falling on top of him. Wincing in pain, Adam doubled over as he lay on the ground. Jason ran to his younger brother's side.

"Get... Christine. Help... Christine," He grunted between his short breaths. Jason pushed his brother's hands away and felt for the wound. All that he felt was a sticky, yet wet substance. Jason knew he had to do something when the moonlight reflected dark patches on his hands. His brother, his friend and a pregnant girl had been shot with the gunman coming right up on them. Looking around for an escape, Jason's eyes spotted what he had been looking for in the darkness. He immediately crawled over and shielded his younger brother. Christine just laid there in silent terror. Right before them was the gunman. Once again, another gun was leveled at the teenagers. But this time, they were on their own with no one for back up and no one to rescue them.
