Adam knew the road well. Keystone Furnace
Road was famous for rental houses and mobile homes. So it did not
surprise him to know that Christine's house was a rental. It was not a
fancy house like she used to live in before her mother died, but it was a
nice cozy older home. There was not one car in the drive, but Adam still
drove up the small driveway in hopes that Christine would be there. He
did not have to wait long before Christine bounced out of the house and
down the steps. She was dressed in a pajama set that featured a baby blue
crop top and a small pair of shorts to match. Her hair was up in a
ponytail and the sight of her reminded him of the times she used to sneak
out of her house at night to meet him on the beach when they were kids.
They would build dribble castles in the moonlight.
"I knew that you would come to me," Christine pranced over to him, about to plant one on him again. But this time Adam was ready. He quickly held him hands out and caught and held her back. "What is going on?" She questioned him. She was totally bewildered by his reaction. "Christine, I came here to talk to you as a friend. I would never want to hurt your feelings and I think that I have to make something clear. I will always care for you, but not in the way that you want me to care about you. I love Alyssa. I don't care if she is in a wheelchair. She is very special to me," Adam said, looking a stunned Christine in the eyes. "You are a beautiful girl and you have really grown up, but I am not the one for you. Also it looks like we are going to have to skip the movie tomorrow night. I want things to cool off for awhile because I don't want to mislead you." "I think you like her out of guilt," Christine said, crossing her arms. "I bet if I was in that accident, things would be different." "Don't you dare say that! You don't know what happened!" "Yes I do. You went over the side of the church camp road. All three of you were very lucky and you almost died in it. But I think you feel guilt because you were driving the car. It makes me wonder if it is love or pity," Christine snorted at her former boyfriend. "I really do care about you. I always have. I hated it when we had to move and I thought I would never see you again. No one else has measured up to you." "We were twelve Christine!" "I still loved you." Seeing that this conversation was not going anywhere, he got back to his main concern. "Look. One of the last things I thought about before going over the side of that mountain was of my family and of Alyssa. I was so scared that something would happen to Alyssa and it did. But I do not pity her for it. She is still the same person inside. She is still the beautiful brunette that walked into Miss Meade's classroom. She makes me feel so alive. Yes, we do share a memory, a bad one. But I was in love with her before the accident," Adam said, getting serious with his friend. Tears began to stir in Christine's eyes and Adam felt horrible, but he had to tell the truth. "You really do love her, don't you?" Christine said, wiping a tear from her eye. Adam just simply nodded. "So what does that mean for me? You want me to stay away after today?" Christine asked with a hurt tone. "No, I would like to have you for a friend. You know what they say about old friends. They are as good as old moonshine," Adam said with a smile. 'How would you know? You don't drink, or do you?" Christine said with a chuckle. A sparkle formed in her eyes. "No, I don't drink and I couldn't if I wanted to. My seizure medicine would not mix with it. But back in Ohio, my cousin and I did get a hold of some spiked punch. I vaguely remember Jason and Stephanie finding us. That is an experience I would never want to relive!" Adam said, recalling the time that Moth Man first chased them. Christine just laughed. "So do you think that we could just enjoy each other's friendship?" Adam asked. "Sure, but don't expect me to give you a second chance," Christine chuckled back. "I would invite you in, but the house is still a maze of boxes. Can I at least show you one thing?" Adam at first hesitated. "I promised Jason that I would get home. Mom is working over tonight and it is a school night." "It will only take a minute. I will also bring you back some lemonade that I was making before you came. Just hold on!" she said as she ran to the house and disappeared through the front door. Adam never had a chance to even refuse, but that was Christine. About five minutes later, Christine made her way out of the house with a glass, a cordless phone and a piece of paper. "Okay Nathan, I will be here. Just step on it, supper's getting cold!" She said as she hung the phone up. Nathan was Christine's stepbrother. He was about two years or so older than she was, Adam could not remember his age right off hand. Even though they were not blood related, they were still very close. Maybe just as close as Jason and Adam. "Sorry, the phone slowed me down." Adam did not recall hearing a phone ring, but easily shrugged it off and took the glass of lemonade. Christine smiled as she opened up the letter in her hand and held it up for Adam to see. "Remember this?" It was a picture of a Trans Am that Adam had drawn a long time ago. As a matter of fact, he gave it to his brother and it one day turned up missing. Adam figured that Jason threw it away when he got made at him, but now he knew what had happened to it. "I am sorry, but I snitched it out of Jason's room on the last day that I knew that I would see you. I wanted something to remember you by and you always wanted a Trans Am like the Bandit." Adam grinned. It was true. A black Trans Am with the firebird symbol was his dream car and he finally had his dream come true, except his was a different color. He could not believe that she had kept it all this time. He took another sip of the lemonade. "You make great lemonade. It is a lot sweeter than my mother's," Adam said, licking his lips. "Why thank you Adam," Christine said as she ranted on about how they had moved in the night to LA. Adam tried to keep track of what she was saying, but things started to mull together. Soon he felt like the world was swimming. He quickly downed the lemonade since he felt a wave of heat come over him. Breaking out into a sweat, he leaned up against the van. Trying to keep track of Christine rattling off, he would nod and grin. But soon it was apparent that something was wrong. "I must be having a seizure," Adam mumbled and sat on the ground. Christine immediately went to his side. "I need to call Jason." "Let's wait and see if you shake it off. If anything, I will drive you home and have Nathan bring me back here," Christine said, in a rather cold manner. "No, Chris... please call... my brother. I want... Jason," Adam stuttered, but Christine did not seem to do as he asked. "I don't know your number. Don't worry, I will take care of you," Christine said, looking towards the road. It seemed to Adam, who could only see blurs that Christine was waiting on something. "Please... call... Jason. He will know... what ...to do," Adam stuttered again. But things were starting to swim even more. He could not gather his thoughts. He did not know what he was doing, but he felt something on his lips. He pried his heavy eyes open to see Christine kissing him. He tried to fight her off, but his arms would not move. His legs would not move and then his brain started to betray him. Adam tried to hang on, but soon he could no longer fight the darkness. Everything went black and the younger Kramer boy fell into a peaceful sleep.
Meanwhile, Jason was finishing up his e-mails when he noticed it was eleven. It had been four hours since Jason had last saw Adam leave with the van to head to Christine's house. Beginning to worry, Jason called the cell phone in the van, but it rang unanswered. He then glanced out the back window, hoping to see the familiar sight of the circular headlights of the brothers' van. However, all he saw was darkness. He wished that he had gotten Christine's phone number or even her address. But he never thought about it. Jason went and decided to take a warm shower, thinking that he was just being over-protective again. But midnight came and past. Jason decided to call up Chuck and make sure he did not go over there. "Do you know what time it is?" Chuck said, half-alive. "Is Adam there?" Chuck, knowing the answer immediately sat up, and replied, "No, why is something wrong?" Jason told him briefly about what had happened. "Do you know where she lives at?" "Sorry Jason, I have no idea. Let me think of who might have an idea and I will call you back in 5." Jason then checked in with Craig. He was going to check in with Alyssa, but he did not think that Clara would allow Adam out at her house past midnight. Jason decided he would just drive out past Alyssa's house if he did not hear anything soon. Many thoughts ran through Jason's head. Did Adam have another accident and was laying over the side of a ravine somewhere? Did his little brother have another seizure while he was driving? Did he breakdown some where? Jason felt helpless once again. Chuck called him back, but unfortunately he did not have any new information. Jason called the sheriff's station, but that was of no help. By the time Chuck called back to see if Adam was safe, it was one in the morning. Both boys knew something was definitely wrong. Jason wanted to go out and search every road, but Adam had the cell phone with him. All Jason could do was sit and wait since it was the only person at home. Chuck was getting ready to come over to help Jason. He knew that it was not like Adam to not call if he was going to be late. At about 1:30am the phone rang. Jason jumped on the phone. "Adam!" he almost yelled. 'No, but I know where your no good brother is. I just caught him with my little sister out here by the state nature preserve by the shelter house in your van. I think he might even be drunk! All I know is that you had better come and get him before I change my mind about killing him!" an angry voice boomed over the phone and then there was dead silence.
