Jason did not even wait on Chuck to get
there, but luckily met him at the end of the driveway. Chuck jumped out
of his car and into the Trans Am. Jason quickly updated him on the
situation. Chuck was speechless.
"This does not feel right Jason. Something is just not right," Chuck said shaking his head. But Jason was visibly upset and did not say anything for the rest of the trip. When he reached the top of the hill, Jason spotted Ol' Blue parked next to an old Toyota. Jason drove up behind the van, not seeing anyone. Both boys got out of the car and heard nothing but silence. Then a scream pierced the night on the other side of the shelter house. Chuck and Jason ran towards the scream. Jason was the first to top the small hill. In the moonlight, he could see a big burly figure kicking another figure that was already on the ground. Jason knew that the bigger figure was not his brother and immediately came to Adam's aid. Jason ran up to the figure and pushed him off balance, knocking the predator to the ground. "Leave my brother alone!" Jason screamed in anger looking down at the figure. But the figure easily rebounded and was in an attack stance. Ready to take the figure on to spare his brother, Jason prepared for the confrontation. "Nathan, I would not do that if I was you," Chuck said, catching up to his friend. "NATHAN! STOP IT!" Christine cried out from behind. She quickly ran and tried to cradle Adam in her arms. Jason was ready to explode. He walked over to her and pushed her back from Adam. "You get away from my brother," Jason snorted at her. Nathan was about to spring in defense of his stepsister, but Chuck stood in the way. It was then that Jason noticed that Adam was not all there. He had an unusual stare and drool was coming from his mouth. Jason tilted his younger brother's face into the moonlight and noticed that blood was coming from Adam's nose. The stare scared him. Recalling Dr. Coykendall's orders of protecting the head, Jason was afraid that Adam had another seizure or more trauma. He looked up and saw Christine, sniffling like a little girl. Then he glanced over at Nathan, who stood on the other side of Chuck. Without warning, Jason lost his temper and sprang out at Nathan. Chuck was not expecting an attack from behind, but was able to keep Jason at bay. "You had better not have hurt him. He has head trauma you stupid idiot," Jason said with pure hate in his voice. "He was messing with my sister," Nathan bellowed back. "You sister is seventeen and can make her own decisions. You had no right hurting my brother!" "Well, nothing had better happen with my sister." "My brother would not have your sister. I am sure that this is part of some stupid plan that she has worked up in her head. He came out to tell her that even." "There is a lot you don't know. Adam loves me," Christine yelled as she circled around to her stepbrother. "He loves Alyssa!" Chuck looked down at Adam and noticed that his eyes were rolling back into his head. "Jason, you need to stop arguing and we need to get Adam to a doctor." Caught up in his anger, Jason forgot about his brother lying behind him on the cold ground. He turned around and picked Adam up. Not wasting anymore time, he placed his younger brother in the Trans Am and left Chuck the keys to the van. "Let's get over to St. Mary's," Jason called out as he disappeared into the sports car and roared away. On the way, he would glance over at his brother. He could not tell if he was having a seizure or if something else was wrong. Whatever was wrong, Jason knew that it was not going to be good. Within minutes, they were at the doors of the emergency room and Adam was whisked back behind the double doors. Jason took his place in the waiting room and was soon joined by Chuck. Jason was not saying too much. His head was full of thoughts. Thoughts of what may have happened and what were going to happen. "Jason, what are you thinking?" Chuck finally asked. The silence was killing him. "I don't know." "I am telling you, something is just not right. Adam would be caught dead in the back of the van in that condition. I know you know that." Jason just shrugged his shoulders, remembering what his brother had told him earlier. It seemed like his brother had this whole other part of him that even he did not know. Like Adam had a secret side to his personality. But he knew Adam's belief's because they had that in common. Chuck was right in the sense that Adam was not the type to be in the back of a van with anyone in that manner. But Christine had this hold on Adam that no one could describe. This doubt ate away at Jason. He hated it that he even doubted his little brother in the first place. These thoughts mulled around in Jason's head for an hour. Only the appearance of the ER doctor brought him out of the deep thought. "Are you here with an Adam Kramer?" the ER doctor asked. "Yes, I am his brother," Jason replied. "Where are your parents? Are they on their way?" "They are both out of town so it is just me," Jason commented. He did not want to call his mother until he knew what was wrong. Knowing his mother would go berserk and drive like a mad woman to get there, he wanted to wait until he had the facts. The doctor grimaced at first, but then shrugged his shoulders. "Well, I am happy to say that there does not seem to be any more trauma to his past injuries and it appears that he did not have a seizure. Do you know where you brother was tonight?" "He went to talk to an old friend. I was with him around 7 or 8 and he was fine then," Jason recalled. "Why do you ask? He is not drunk or anything like that, is he? He is not a drinker or a drug user if that is your next question." "I was going to ask you about that and it makes this even more interesting," the ER doctor said, opening up his chart. "What is going on? Is Adam going to be all right?" Chuck asked with a concerned tone. "I think he will be fine. It seems that we found traces of a drug in your brother's system. It is a drug very similar to the date rape drugs that are surfacing everywhere. We really do not see much of this drug around in these parts so we do not have much experience with it. We are contacting UCLA's medical hospital and sending out the results to them to help us isolate the exact drug that is in his system. We have to keep him here overnight or just until we hear back from UCLA. I am concerned about the drug's effects and the fact that your brother takes seizure medicine," the ER doctor elaborated. "But you think he will be fine, right?" Jason asked, still taking the news in. "We believe that it was a small dose and he has not shown any life threatening complications." "Can we see him now?" Jason asked. He wanted to see for himself. "Yes, he is in the second stall on the left. Do you have any other questions?" After assuring that he would get back with them as soon as he heard anything, the ER doctor went back in the ER. Jason quickly made his way back to his brother. Chuck promised to call Laura and notify her of Adam's trip to the hospital. It was not the first time that he was in the emergency room with Adam, but at least this time Adam's life was not in danger. He pulled back the curtain of the second stall. Taken back at the sight of his sibling, he gasped. Adam was now showing the signs of what Nathan had done to him. His right cheekbone was beginning to show a nasty bruise and it appeared that his bottom lip was swollen. Jason walked over to his side and lifted the covers. Adam still had his clothes on so Jason lifted his shirt. Deep bruises were already forming on his chest from where Nathan had kicked him. Seeing his brother covered in bruises and knowing that Adam was not able to defend himself, Jason vowed that Nathan was going to pay. As soon as he could speak with his father, he was going to see to it that Nathan would be charged with assault. Adam began to stir, wincing as he moved. "Take it easy, little buddy," Jason said, putting his hand on Adam's chest. He wanted Adam to know that he was there. Adam was barely able to open his eyes, but lifted his hand up to meet Jason's. Slurring his words and stuttering still, Adam asked, "Did I have another seizure?" "No, not this time. You were drugged with something," Jason replied. It took a little while for Adam to process his brother's answer. "Drugged? Then why am I sore?" "Adam, it is a long story and you are not in the condition to hear it. Just take it easy until we make sure that everything is going to be fine," Jason reassured his brother. Adam was not happy with the answer, but he was also just too exhausted to even think. He still wondered what was going on. All he remembered was going to Christine's house and talking with her. He could not piece together what had happened it was driving him crazy. "Was I in an accident?" Adam asked again. Jason sighed, but replied with a sharp no. Adam started to think again. He recalled looking at a picture that he drew a long time ago. He remembered that he talked to Christine and settled things between them. But that would not have left him bruised up, drugged and in an emergency room with his brother hovering over him. "How did I get here?" Adam asked. "I brought you here." "I don't get it." "Adam, I told you. I will explain later. You are not in the condition to be doing this. I will just have to explain it all over again later." Adam was quiet again, trying to recollect his thoughts. He reached into his shirt pocket and pulled out the small piece of paper that had Christine's address on it. Yep, sure enough it was there so he did not imagine that. Noticing the piece of paper, Jason took the paper and put it into his pocket. "Adam, I told you to rest!" "I just don't get it. I go and talk to Christine, have a nice drink of lemonade and boom; I am in an emergency room. Not to mention, that I have obviously got my rear end kicked all over by someone or something." Jason was not paying much attention until he heard the lemonade part. "Did you say that you drank some lemonade? Did Christine give it to you?" "Yeah, it was better than mom's, but don't tell her that," Adam smirked. Then he made a painful face. Jason's face lit up just as the doctor made a round to check on his patient. "Doctor, it was in the lemonade. Whatever it was I bet it was in the lemonade! Where does Christine live?" Jason remarked. "It is on that piece of paper I had," Adam said weakly. "What is this about lemonade? I am totally lost." "Doctor, I need to talk to the sheriff of Pine County. My father is friends with him," Jason said with determination. He had an idea of what happened now and that witch was not going to get away with almost getting his brother killed. "Would someone please tell me what is going on! Why am I here?" Adam asked again, his voice still weak. The doctor looked at Adam and replied, "You were drugged with a small dose of a sedative. It mixed with your regular medicine and became even stronger. You are very lucky that it did not do more than that. This type of concoction could have caused you to have problems swallowing or even have put you into cardiac arrest."
