Jason did not know how to react. Christine
was standing right by him, rubbing her stomach and smiling like no one
could bring her down. He looked to the floor to gain his senses.
"Yes, my dear brother-in-law, you are going to be an uncle," Christine chided again. "Now I have proof and your family will have to accept me." That was more than Jason could take. "You will never be a part of my family," Jason muttered as he threw his books down. Never in his life had he been this mad. His worst fear was coming true. Feeling like he was going to lose control, he turned again to leave. But Adam was standing in his way. He stopped for a minute to look at his younger brother. Anger filled his heart once again. "Jason, calm down. She is lying," Adam said in a calm voice. He could tell that Jason was furious. But he was not prepared to feel the wrath of that anger. Before Adam could even move or say anything, Jason pushed him up against the set of lockers. The sound of Adam hitting the locker was thunderous and echoed down the hallway. It was loud enough to catch the attention of Mrs. Fain, who was trying to get through the crowd. Adam's head hit the lockers with full force, but it was his heart that felt the blow. He just tried to get back up to face his brother. He could not understand why Jason was reacting the way he was. "Jason, what is wrong? You know the truth!" Adam said, but Jason just grabbed him with lightning speed and slammed him again against the lockers. Feeling his feet leave the floor, all he could do was let Jason get it out of his system. He was not going to fight with his brother this way, not with people looking or ever again. "Adam, sometimes I wonder about you. You are so stupid sometimes and this time your stupidity has really done it," Jason sneered, still shaking his younger brother. Tears started to fill Adam's eyes. He had told Jason the truth. He knew that he did not do anything with Christine. "Your memory is not the same and I had this awful feeling that something did happen. Now you have messed up your life more than it is already messed up!" "But Jason, I didn't-," Adam started to whimper, but Jason cut him off. "Adam, I just can't take it any more. I can't stand being on this roller coaster anymore," Jason snorted. "You might think that you didn't do anything, but it is evident that you did. Now YOU are going to live with it without me." "You don't trust me anymore!" Adam screamed. He felt like everything that ever mattered in his life was shattered into a million pieces. He knew beyond a shadow of a doubt Christine was bluffing. "How do you know that she is even pregnant!" Christine chimed in then. She simply stuck her stomach out and said, "Well I have the doctor's papers to prove it and I guess time will tell." "I trusted you," Jason said and let go of his brother. Turning to walk away, Mrs. Fain tried to get him to calm down, but Jason just simply walked out of the school. Kara ran after him, but he simply shrugged her off. After regaining his senses, Adam ran after his brother. He had to talk some sense into his head. Just as Jason was about to get into the van, Adam put his hand on his older brother's shoulder. Before he could even say anything, Jason lost his temper. Not thinking about his actions at all, he hit his brother with a very powerful roundhouse that sent Adam into the air and landing in the open parking space next to the van. Jason then got into the van and squealed off, leaving Adam trying to focus and take in everything that had happened. He never expected Jason to turn on him. Jason had always been there for him, but not this time. Kara rushed to Adam's side. "Adam, are you all right?" Adam just nodded. He was so upset he could not speak. "Adam, Jason didn't mean those things. I know he didn't," Kara pleaded on her boyfriend's behalf. "The accident was rough on him too." "Rough on him?" Then Adam chuckled. "He is the one who wanted me to live." "What is that supposed to mean?" Adam just looked at Kara. His thoughts were so confused. "I don't know Kara. I just don't know about anything anymore." With that, Christine had made her way to the door and was looking straight out at Adam. Being the last thing he wanted to see, Adam got up and ran off towards the back part of the school. Kara tried to get him to stop, but he just kept going. Adam kept going until he reached his car. The boys had drove separate since Jason had a date with Kara to study for a physics test at the library. Driving aimlessly and recklessly at times, Adam made his way back to the cliff that he often went to when he was troubled. There he thought of his life. What had been and what could have been. He also thought about how he was going to prove his innocence that he was not the father of Christine's baby. Jason, meanwhile, just drove around aimlessly too. He was too busy yelling at himself to really pay attention to anything. He could not believe that his brother let Christine dupe him like that. Every time he thought of that, he banged on the dash or the steering wheel. Throwing such a fit, he did not even notice that the gas level was slowly making its way towards empty. As he turned on to his road, the van sputtered to a halt. Barely able to get it to the shoulder area, Jason had wished that he at least had paid more attention to the gas level. Frustrated even more, he began to walk to the Kramer home. He had the cell phone on him and for the first time, he glanced at it. His mother had been trying to call him and he never even heard it ring. He called his mother, who was not happy with the situation at hand. The school had called her at work to report that not one, but both of her sons were truant. Mrs. Fain also told her about the incident. Laura was irate with her sons, especially Jason. The minute that Jason hit the door, he was told to sit down like a child. "First of all, I am very angry with you. Mrs. Fain told me what you did. How could you do that to your own brother!" Laura said, pointing her finger at him. It was not often that Jason felt the anger of his mother. Usually, that honor was left to Adam. "I was worried sick about both of you. Do you know what it is like to have to get that phone call at work to say that your sons had a fight and that they don't know where you are? Then to top it off, you beat up on your brother! What on earth were you thinking!" Jason did not know what to say. Deep down, he knew his mother was right. He had over-reacted and did something that could jeopardize his relationship one of the most important people in his life, his brother. Tears started to stream down his face and he began to shake uncontrollably. "I am sorry mom, I just could not take it anymore," Jason muttered before he completely broke down. Laura's anger melted to compassion for her oldest son. She reached over and held him as he unloaded months of emotions. After getting his composure, he finally spoke again. "Mom, why can't things just go back to the way they used to be. Why are things just so complicated?" "Jason, that is life. I don't have the answers, but you have to have faith that God knows what He is doing and gives us the strength and guidance to make it through these times. I remember a time when you were praying to just have your brother live. And he did," Laura said softly, stroking her son's hair. "But mom, why does he have to be so stupid sometimes?" Jason asked, still gathering his thoughts. "I seem to think that someone else does some stupid things too like slamming his younger brother up against a wall?" Laura mentioned. "I wasn't thinking and I might have lost my brother because of it." "Very true, but I don't think you have lost Adam," Laura reassured him. "He will be here soon. I know he will." Jason got up, but Laura had him sit back down. "I was going to go and find him." "He would be like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Adam will be here. I have faith in him." "Mom?" "Yes, son." "Do you think that Adam is the father?" Without even a hesitation, Laura answered his question, "Jason, things have just fallen into place too smoothly in Christine's favor. I smell a rat and while I think that Christine could be pregnant, I think that if she is, she came to Emerald Beach that way. Things are just moving too fast. Plus most of all, I trust Adam. Adam said he did not do anything and I believe him." Jason felt like an idiot. He should have been more supportive of his brother, but he let him down and let Christine drive the first nail into the coffin otherwise known as their relationship. How could he doubt his own flesh and blood? His mother was right and it gave him the boost that he needed to take Christine on. But would his brother forgive him? More importantly, would his brother ever come home?
Meanwhile, Adam was busy trying to make amends with Alyssa. He drove out to her house not too long after she arrived herself. Alyssa was very upset and did not know how to deal with the news. She knew deep down that Adam did not have feelings for Christine. But she also knew that he did have a period of time that he was drugged and alone with Christine. It was possible that something happened and she knew that she could not live with that. Whether it was wrong or not, she could not get that vision out of her head nor could she deal with Adam being a father. "Alyssa, I swear I did not do anything with her. She is lying!" Adam pleaded for the umpteenth time, but Alyssa was just too upset. Christine had taken her toll. Alyssa turned to Adam and simply said, "Adam, right now I need some time to get things together in my head. I am dealing with the accident, living life and just getting by. I know that you do not have feelings for her, but I don't know if you are the father of that baby. She drugged you and you put yourself into that situation." Adam pleaded again with the love of his life, but Alyssa just tearfully replied, "I just need time Adam." Then she really broke his heart. Alyssa handed him back his class ring and letterman jacket. "I am going to prove my innocence to you, you will see," Adam said, refusing to take the stuff. "I will give you your time, but I am also going to give you my word that I will prove that I am not the father of that baby." Alyssa just tried to hold back the tears as Adam got into his car and raced down the road. She said a prayer for his safety and then called his mother to let her know what had happened and that he was there. Jason and Laura did not take the news well, but understood Alyssa's feelings. They just hoped that Adam's next stop would be home. Adam, though, could not believe what was happening. He had lost his brother and now his girlfriend, the love of his life. The only other person he felt that he could trust right now was his mother. Driving towards home, he wondered how he was going to explain things and most of all, how was he going to live without Alyssa and Jason. To Adam, his world had came crashing down around him and he did not understand why. He was innocent and alone.
