When Jason returned to school, he walked with his girlfriend to the
physics classroom. He noticed that a lot of the other students were
pointing at him and then whispering in the classroom. It gave Jason an
uneasy feeling, but he had a major test to take and he was trying to
concentrate on that. After Jason completed the test, Samantha Clarkson
threw a note onto his desk. Samantha sat next to Jason and usually kept
to herself. Jason discreetly opened the note. "So haven't you heard the
news? Adam went nuts in the cafeteria and kicked the crap out of Eric
Peterson. They say he broke his nose. It took two people to get him off
of him. What is his problem? Did that accident really whack him out of
his mind? Well, at least we are safe since he got kicked out of school."
Jason was mortified as he glanced around the room to find the author of the note. He whispered to Samantha about it, but she did not know where it had came from either. This could not be true. Adam would not do something like that or would he? He felt like he did not know his own brother anymore. He knew Adam was hiding something and whatever it was it was tearing them apart, not to mention Adam. He tried to think back over the past few days, but the only thing that he could think of was the fact that Bill was in the house and Adam was having problems with the accident. He tried to think about a specific event, but nothing came to mind. That is except for the day that they were cleaning out their closets and Adam grabbed the notebook back from him. Jason was going to ask him about that, but it had totally slipped his mind. His brother had never grabbed anything from him since they were kids. When he got home he had to somehow find that notebook without Adam catching him. Then he felt a ping of guilt. Was he really plotting to "investigate" his own younger brother? He could not believe that he even thought of breaking his brother's right to privacy, but it was evident that something was wrong and Adam was not talking. Even though it would seem right to believe that it was because of the accident, but Jason had a feeling that the accident was not the source of the problem. One way or another, he was going to find out and if that meant reading his brother's old journals, then he would read every one of them. The ringing of the bell woke him out of his thoughts. Kara walked over to him. He let her read the note. She was just as shocked. "I am going to go and meet with Chuck and Craig to find out what is going on. They both have study hall next period. I will just say that I am tutoring them again," Jason said, wanting to get to study hall. "Go ahead, I will go onto my next class. Just call me when you get the chance tonight," Kara said, kissing him on the cheek. Jason promised to call and proceeded onto the cafeteria for study hall. As he went through the halls, the whispering continued. This made Jason even more nervous. He did not like the idea of his brother being deemed as a psychopathic mad man in their small town. Once in the study hall, he found Craig and Chuck sitting at the usual table. They quickly relayed what had happened to Jason and what they had heard that had happened afterward. "I bet Dad was in a good mood when he picked him up," Jason whispered. He knew his dad would be furious with his little brother. "Some other man picked him up. I saw them get into your father's car from the English class," Chuck said in a low voice. "But Eric deserved it. They say Adam broke his nose." "I am sure Eric did deserve it. I had better get home. Adam and Uncle Bill do not get along at all," Jason said, realizing who did pick Adam up. Plus he wanted to talk to his brother about everything. Adam was very strong, but he normally saved it for their cases. He thanked Chuck and Craig and asked permission to go to the office. He asked Mrs. Blake if he could go home and check in on his brother. His last class was math and there was going to be a substitute for the class. After agreeing to get his assignment and Adam's assignments for the next three days, she agreed to let him sign himself out. He just hoped he could get home in time before anything could happen. He knew that Adam hated Bill and it probably wasn't the best of situations. One thing for sure was that he was going to read that journal whether Adam liked it or not.
Adam sat as far over in the station wagon as he could form his uncle. Not a word was spoken until they reached the fork in the road that led to the road that the Kramer house was located on. It was a very desolate area so Bill pulled the car over in a gravel cove. The forest trees towered all around and this made Adam very suspicious. "Get out of the car," Bill finally said after turning the ignition off and opening the door. Adam obeyed and leaned up against the side of the station wagon to face his uncle. "I know you hate my guts and trust me, the feeling is mutual. I don't like being here with you no more than you do," He said, glaring at his nephew. "Your point," Adam said, crossing his arms. "My point is that I know what you know and you had better keep your mouth shut! If you even peep a word, I promise you this, you will not have a home. You will be begging to be in that prison with me. Then I will arrange for you to die," Bill said, getting into Adam's face with his evil tone. Adam just stood there stone-faced with his arms crossed. "The way I see it. If I lose my freedom, you lose your life," Bill said again. "I just have one question," Adam asked, maintaining his space. "What!" Bill yelled angrily. "Why did you do that? I had no idea what you did. Why Maria? Why didn't you just go out and get a whore or find a girlfriend? She was your daughter!" Adam said back, getting back into his uncle's face. "A father has to teach his children certain things you know. Well, as a man I need to help teach young girls how to properly please their husbands. Don't you want your future wife to know how to please you?" Bill fired back. "I did nothing wrong. All three of those sluts wanted it not to mention the rest." "I am only seventeen. I am not worried about things like that. She was not even a teenager, she definitely did not need to know about that," Adam came back. "She was your daughter." "To tell me you have not became a man yet? No wonder you don't understand. You are just a little whiny little boy," Bill said back. "It is too bad mothers don't teach their sons about these things." "I am more of a man now than you will ever hope to be and I am sure that when I do get married, I will be very happy," Adam said with an even tone. He was pushing the thought of his mother teaching him anything like that out of his mind. Bill was just plain crazy. "Well, you know nothing of the pleasures that a woman has to provide to a man. It is up to us men to teach them," Bill laughed. Then he peered into Adam's eyes. "I hear you have a girlfriend. I bet I can teach her well. I have never taught a paraplegic. That might be interesting." Adam knew that Bill was trying to get under his skin, but he could not help, but to be angry at the thought of his uncle laying a hand on Alyssa. "That got you. I will tell you this. You squeal on me and I will make sure that she gets taught a proper lesson one way or another," Bill said with a sneer. Adam lunged at Bill, who just laughed and grabbed him by the arms. "Haven't you got into enough trouble today?" But Adam still fought with him. Bill was just too strong though. After Adam pushed him to the ground, Bill easily flipped him over and slapped him across the face and punched him in the stomach. "Don't mess with me little boy." Adam was clutching his stomach and could hardly move. He felt the warmth of the blood coming from his lip. "Now as I said, keep your mouth shut and we will get along fine. I will soon be out of your hair and be off to where ever after I am found not guilty!" Bill said getting back in the car. Adam struggled to get back into the car. Soon they were home and Bill got out of the car and went into the house. Adam was still sore and went over to use his rearview mirror to wipe the blood from his mouth. He decided that he had better get the Trans Am on the road that night. He was still wiping the blood away from his mouth when he saw his father and James pull up the driveway. He could tell his father was displeased with him the minute his face came into view. James went on into the house as Mr. Kramer faced his son. The father and son discussed what happened to start the fight and what Mrs. Blake had said about the incident. "Adam, I am so glad that your mother is not here right now. I will have to tell her you know," Mr. Kramer said with a stern voice. Adam nodded. "I expect that you will become a very studious young man these next three days. I know that Eric has caused you problems in the past and you have had a rough time since the accident. But you can't do things like this after you become an investigator." Adam nodded again. His father did have a point. "I am sorry Dad. I just have a lot of things on my mind and then he just had to start with me." "Well, all I have to say is that for the next three days you will be here," Mr. Kramer said. "Understand?" "Yes, sir," Adam said. He was not happy with that decision since that left him with Bill, but it went better than he thought. "I guess you had better get some ice on that lip there slugger," Mr. Kramer said with a smile. "I have to go in and review the statements. We will go over them completely tonight before dinner." Adam did want to see those statements and smiled at that thought. After seeing his father disappear into the house, he finished up the work on his car. He was about to start it when he saw Jason coming down the driveway. He decided to wait until Jason got up there to see if six months of hard work had paid off. Jason got out of the van and faced his brother. "So I heard that you are a psychopathic killer now?" Both boys traded stories before quietly leaning up against the car. "So what did Dad say?" Jason asked. "I am not to leave the grounds for three days," Adam replied. "I bet you brought me my schoolwork to keep me occupied as well." "Mrs. Blake said that I could leave early if I did. It is in the van," Jason said pointing towards the van. "I thought that Eric never had a chance to lay a hand on you." "One must have slipped through," Adam said, touching his lip. It was pretty swollen. "You had better get ice on that. They said that you beat up Eric really good. I bet he will leave you alone for awhile," Jason said, looking straight at Adam. "What caused you to snap like that?" "I just got mad," Adam answered. "I really don't want to talk about it anymore." "Okay," Jason said realizing that it was pointless to argue the matter anymore. "You are just in time though for the big event," Adam said a she patted the hood of the Trans Am. "You mean for the resurrection of the dead. Would not miss it for anything?" Jason said with a smile. He knew that Adam had worked tirelessly on the car. Adam slipped into the driver's seat and turned over the ignition. The engine roared to life. Both boys yelled out in excitement. "Want to take it for a spin? I can go up and down the driveway," Adam said, peering through the window at his older brother. Jason was about ready to jump into the car, but their father called for them to come into the house. Adam shut the car off and both boys went into the house. They sat down in the living room where James had a lot of papers spread out all over the coffee table. Bill was there beside Carl. They had been looking over the statements. James let Adam and Jason each have a copy of the statements to read. Adam was disgusted as he read the accounts of the alleged rapes of the two girls whose names were only named as Stephanie and Michelle. The accounts were very detailed and the events took place on tow different days at the church campgrounds. What got Adam the most was that one of the girls even mentioned that Bill had stated to her that he was teaching her the ways of a woman. She was only sixteen, a year younger than himself. The other girl was fifteen and was able to describe certain marks on Bill's body. Her last sentence was "he said he was going to make an honest woman of me since my father would not do it". That was the same thing he told his own daughter that night and earlier that day to Adam himself. It was evident to Adam that his uncle was going to hang himself in court. Jason just laid the papers down and said nothing. Adam had to smile a little knowing that his uncle had really done it this time. "Those are pretty consistent statements, James," Jason said, looking over at the lawyer. "Yes they are, but we have dug up the dirt so to say. The girls are best friends and share everything. They have known each other since pre-school. However, Michelle has a history of problems. She has lived with the same foster family for the past eleven years of her life. During those years, she has been known to drink, runaway from home and participate in sexual activity," James said holding his notebook. "So she has a record. She also has reported malice distrust for grown men according to her psychological reports. Even better, her father had abused her as a child so she is experienced in this area." "How did you find out all that?" Adam asked. He could not believe the victims had become the perpetrators. "Everything is open when we are in a battle for charges of abuse. This is serious. The findings are confidential to court members and legal assistants. The girls will remain nameless and the public will not be allowed in the courtroom. Bill is a different story since he is not a minor," James answered. "What about the other girl?" Jason asked. "Perfect home with no reported problems. However, these two girls are best friends and are as close as you and Adam. Michelle had made advances to your uncle, but he shunned her for obvious reasons. She was very mad and made up the story along with the other girl," James said with a matter of fact tone. "Didn't they go to the hospital?" Adam asked. He knew his uncle was guilty and he could not stand to see those young girls victimized, even if they had a shady past. His uncle shot him a glance at that statement. "Yes, two days later," James responded. "I don't know if anything was found, but highly unlikely. It is their word versus Bill's word." "So that is not enough to convict?" Jason asked with a slight grin. "No, the girls will probably massacred on the stand, right Carl?" Bill said with a big smile. Carl smiled back. "Justice will be served," James said. Adam thought that he was not comfortable with the possibility with of interrogating minors, it was not his job to defend Bill. "So what are you going to do once you are a free man again," Carl said, sipping a cup of coffee. "I am moving from Airdale and picking up roots somewhere else. I do love working with youth, especially within the church. I like having the ability to help guide and teach youth," Bill said as he sat up. His glance was leveled right towards Adam, who squirmed in his seat. At that Adam had to get air, so he excused himself and went out to the front deck. He did not go alone though. Bill casually made his way to where Adam was at on the deck while the rest of the company discussed the case. "See! I told you that I would be a free man. That James is going to tear those girls apart!" Bill said as he took a sip of his coffee. "That was good that you kept your mouth shut. The wisest thing you have done yet." "I have never told anyone about what happened so I have no idea why you would doubt me," Adam sneered back. "Well, your secret will enable me to continue on with my crusade. Since you have proven to be a great confidant, I will promise you that I will leave your blessed girlfriend alone in my crusade," Bill said as he slapped Adam on the back playfully. "I will leave her for you to tame." Jason looked out about that time and saw his uncle playfully give Adam a jab on the back. Jason thought that maybe that meant that Adam had finally decided to support their uncle after hearing about what James had said. He was uneasy about a few things, but he figured it was up to the jury to decide. Unfortunately Jason was very wrong. It was then that Adam realized he had a decision to make that would effect the rest of his life. He calmly went upstairs and called Chuck. After some convincing, he talked him into meeting him at the old State Park on Sawmill road. He packed some clothes into his book bag and laid his schoolbooks on the floor. He would have no need for them now. Adam quietly slipped out the door and quietly pushed his car down the driveway far enough to not be heard. The only thing that he left on the desk in his bedroom was a note for Jason and his set of keys to Ol' Blue. |
