"Jason, you had better get better and be all right. I will see you soon
big brother. I love you buddy. I have to go to sleep. I must go to sleep.
I don't feel any pain Jason."
Those words rocked Jason out of his hospital bed in the recovery unit. His eyes were wide open with fear and sweat was pouring down his face. The nurse stepped back once she saw his crazed look. Jason started pulling out all of the IV's that held him down to the bed. "I have to save my brother! I have to save him!" he cried as the nurses tried to hold him down. "Requesting assistance in recovery," the loudspeaker announced. Jason heard it, but nothing was stopping him from saving his brother. He felt this cold sensation come over him, even though he was sweating. He then saw his mother running towards him with terror in her face. "Mom, Adam is dying. He is in trouble. Help me, we have to save him! I hear him Mom, I heard him," he screamed as he jumped back up again out of the nurses' grips. "I feel cold Mom, we have to save him." But Laura was pushed aside by the orderlies that came to assist the nurses in strapping Jason down. He did hear his mother cry out over the confusion. "Jason, sweetie, it was just a dream! You just had surgery to remove your appendix and repair your lung. You have three broken ribs. You have to settle down before you hurt yourself even more!" For a moment, Jason stopped moving, but then the chilling voice of his brother flooded his thoughts again. "Jason, everything is going to be all right. I don't feel any pain at all and I can think so clearly. No more seizures. It is like I am just here in the darkness, yet I am surrounded by warmth. I am sorry Jason; I just can't fight anymore. My body is so cold, but my heart is so warm." Then there was a long pause. While Jason strained to hear more, the nurses were strapping him down in restraints. They were about to start hooking him up to the IV's again and the doctor was ordering a strong sedative. "Adam, Adam where are you?" Jason whispered. His mother was looking on, staring in disbelief. "Good-bye Jason. I will always be with you until we meet again." The voice chilled Jason to the core. "Adam, Adam! No Adam! Where are you? Why is it so cold!" Jason screamed as he threw into a rage again. But this time, he could not move his arms or legs since they were tied down to the bed. "NOOOOOOO!" He screamed straight from the heart. At this time, the doctor administered the sedative and Jason began to fade off into Neverland as his mother called it when he was younger. Feeling a strange emptiness inside, Jason cried himself to sleep. Laura stepped up to Jason and gently kissed him on the forehead. "Everything is going to be okay honey," His mother said, patting him on the head lovingly. "Nothing will never be right. Adam is dead," were the last words that Jason muttered. Laura froze in total silence. She knew her sons were close, but she was sure that this was just a bad dream. At least she hoped that it was. Laura went out to the waiting room and cried like a little girl in her mother's strong arms. Carl tried to climb over the side of the bridge, but several officers dragged him back from the edge. "That is my son! You have to do something! He has seizures and has a traumatic brain injury," he cried. But the officers kept him beside them. Paul and Junior both tried to race to the end of the bridge, but they only made it a few feet. But Jim could not stand it. When he heard Carl cry out for his son, Jim knew he had to do something. He climbed up to the side of the bridge and started to make his way down the cord. One officer grabbed his hand, but he yelled back. 'I am going to try to save the boy. Let me go. I am not a killer." The officer, realizing that he could get to Adam before any of the approaching river patrols, let Jim slide down the cord to the river below. Flashlights lit up the area that surrounded Jim. He looked feverishly for any sign of anything. One of the lights swooped through an area downstream, about 20 feet from where he was hanging on the cord. "Over there!" he heard someone shout from the bridge and the flashlight caught a glimpse of a body, bobbing up and down in the current. Jim immediately let go of the rope and ignored the cold water. He swam over to the figure and held it above water. After getting his arms around the body, he quickly swam towards one of the approaching river patrol boats. The men on the boat kept sight of them and pulled both Adam and Jim out of the river. Adam lay lifeless as they put blankets around Jim. The rescue crew started their lifesaving procedures, but Adam seemed lifeless. But Adam was in a limbo stage. He heard everything going on around him. He heard his father's voice on the radio, trying to find out about his youngest son's condition. The peacefulness though called him back to the darkness. "I just can't fight anymore. I feel so cold, but my heart is warm. Good-by Jason. I will always be with you until we meet again." he muttered. One of the rescuers saw Adam's lips moving, but he still did not have a pulse. "Oh no you don't," the man gringed and he hit Adam square in the stomach with all of the force that he could. Then Adam heard a deafening yell that pierced the quiet. "NOOOOOOOOOO!" Before Adam knew what was going on, he was throwing up water while the rescue team held him up. He was confused. One minute he did not feel any pain and now he was flooded with needles stabbing him on every inch of his body. He shivered and trembled beyond control as the team threw blankets onto him and removed his wet clothes. He glanced over to see Jim, looking at him with great concern. Jim smiled as if to welcome him back to life. "I told your mother that I would protect you, now you have to do the rest young man," Jim said before Adam was lifted off of the boat and into an awaiting squad. Exhausted from his ordeal, Adam slipped into a welcome sleep, not caring where he woke up. "Jason! Jason honey, wake up. I have something to tell you," a voice said through the fog. Jason was trying to make sense of things. His thoughts were coming together like a flood. He opened his eyes to see the tearful face of his mother. "Jason, do you hear me? I have to tell you something and it just can't wait," Laura said, looking at her oldest son with concern. Jason was still gathering his thoughts until he just remembered the voice that haunted him. He immediately started crying uncontrollably. Laura comforted her son. "Jason, what on earth is wrong with you?" After crying for a few minutes more, Jason finally said, "I know mom, my brother is gone." "What! Jason, listen to me," Laura said, grabbing Jason's chin and making him look up at her. "Adam is here in the hospital on the next floor. Your father is with him right now. It is all over baby." She said, stroking his face to calm him down. She did not want him to fly into a fit again. Jason looked at her in disbelief. He then thought back to the voice and put his hands to his heart. He tried to feel for his brother like he did before, but he could no longer feel Adam's presence. Laura looked at him strangely. "What is going on? What are you doing?" she asked. Jason looked up at her, his eyes wide and alert. "Take me to my brother," he said. "I don't know if I can Jason, you are just..." but Jason cut off his mother. "Mom, I need to see him. I have to tell him something and I am not waiting a second longer," Jason said with determination. Laura went for a nurse to talk to her about his wish. Soon two orderlies came into the room and started doing things to the bed. Laura came back in and grabbed the IV tree. "Where are we going like this?" Jason asked, expecting a wheelchair. "To Adam. You can't get out of that bed with your stitches and wrap so they are going to move you to his room," Laura replied warmly. Jason was just beside himself, wanting to make sure that Adam was truly all right. They had to go up to the top floor of the five-story hospital to the pediatrics section. They had placed Adam in that section since he was still seventeen and the rest of the floors were full with people battling influenza. By moving Jason, that would open up another room and put the family together. Soon Jason saw his father at the foot of a bed. He could not see his brother, but his father rushed forward to greet him and his wife. "How is he doing?" Laura asked, still holding the IV tree. "He is holding his own. They are still trying to warm him up and we are hoping that he will not get sick or an infection from the river water. They said that sometimes the toxins from the river can caused deadly infections when swallowed in great volumes," Carl said quietly. "He still has not really woke up. He just seems to come and go." Laura smiled quietly and hugged her husband. She was just happy to have her sons back. "How are you doing Jason?" Carl asked as he reached out and hugged his oldest son. "Okay I guess," Jason answered. He did not feel any pain, but he knew that he had some stitches that would probably hurt later after the painkillers wore off. The orderlies then wheeled the bed in next to his younger brother's bed. Blankets surrounded Adam and IV's ran out of his left side. Jason assumed they were hooked to his left arm. His right hand was the only part of his body except for his face that Jason could see. They lined up his bed next to Adam to where he could touch his right hand. Jason grabbed his younger brother's hand and quickly dropped it. "He is cold!" Jason exclaimed, looking over at his father and mother. "I know son, he is still warming up. They had to bring him back on the river and the water lowered his body temperature. The doctors are amazed that he is even alive. They have been using this one machine to warm him up," Jason's father said, sensing his son's shock. "But he is going to be just fine barring we do not have any infections." Jason reached over and held his hand once again. "Can I talk to him alone for a minute? I have something I have to clear up something with him," Jason asked his parents. Taken by surprise, the couple looked at their oldest son for a minute and then excused themselves to the cafeteria for some coffee. Jason lowered his bed rail so he could swing his legs around to face his younger brother, who was mouthing something at the time. "Adam, I have something to say to you and I hope you can hear me. I am sorry about what you heard me say in the woods. I was not thinking right. I might have thought that maybe I would be scared to have you as a partner under pressure, but I was wrong. I was totally wrong. You are the best partner I could ever have or ever hope to have. I would have told you sooner, but I just could not find the words. I know you almost died on me again. Please forgive me for what I said, I did not mean to hurt you," Jason said softly. Tears started to fill his eyes. He was so taken by his emotions that he did not even notice Stephanie standing in front of the bed. "Jason," she said softly, but it still caused Jason to jump. He quickly put his blanket around him hoping that his gown had covered him appropriately. She had to smile at her cousin's reaction. "I never saw anything and even if I did, I have seen you before any ways. We are cousins! Grandma used to give us all baths together for Heaven's sake. Besides Jacob always shoots me the moon to try to make me blush." Jason's face was red as he smiled at his cousin's attempt to cheer him up. He looked over at her to see tears in her eyes as well. The two cousins had an instant understanding. "I hope he hears me. I really do mean it. Even with his health problems, I still trust him with my life. He saved my life by making that deal with Paul. Now all I can do is hold his hand. I should have apologized sooner," Jason said, holding his head down. "Jason, he forgave you a long time ago," Stephanie said, walking over and stroking Adams medium length hair. 'I sure hope you are right," Jason said as he held his brother's hand tight to his cheek. His tears streamed down onto Adam's still cold fingers. 'I never want him to think that I doubt his abilities ever again." Stephanie looked down at Adam and whispered into his ears. "Quit being stubborn you old goat and make up with the fool before I start bawling." Jason had to chuckle at his cousin's choice of words. It was then though he felt something. He felt his brother's fingers move as if to wipe the tears away. Jason held Adam's hand with both of his with all of his might. "You are going to be just fine little brother. I am not going to let you go now partner. I still have a Christmas present to collect from you land I can't exactly return my gift to you." "Actually Jason, I think you just gave him the best gift of all," Stephanie said, glancing over at a bewildered Jason. "You gave him your full trust back." |
