CHAPTER 16

Jason was furious as he drove the brother's van towards the church grounds. He could not believe that after he trusted Adam to tell him about the case that his own brother would go behind his back. Visions of the night of the accident flashed in his head. He then felt guilty for feeling so mad. If it was Kara, he figured that he would have done the same thing. Jason was just hoping that he could catch them before they really got themselves into trouble. He had just made it to the turn off to the road that led to Maple Hollow Road when he spotted a young man walking towards him on the road. The boys seemed to be stumbling around so Jason slowed the van up to see what was going on. As he grew closer to the figure, he noticed that it was Jacob. His clothes were very disheveled and he was out of breath. Jason immediately stopped the van. Jacob opened the van door and jumped into the passenger seat.

"You have to get help. I can't be part of this anymore," Jacob said in between gasps. "He has gone completely crazy."

"What is going on?" Jason asked, trying to understand Jacob.

"He is trying to kill Alyssa. He needs money. I overheard his conversation with Cyrus so I ran to get help," Jacob said, still gasping for breath. "Clara would not listen to me and she would not let me see Alyssa."

"I know you were involved with the accident. Why should I trust you? You have injured my brother for life, not to mention Alyssa," Jason quipped back. He knew that Jacob was not a bad person, but he wanted to see what he would say. There was still a chance that it could be a set up and that they already had Adam, Chuck and Craig. 'I ought to break your neck right now."

"I don't blame you, but I swear I thought it was part of the prophecy. I thought he was the Messiah until I saw Alyssa's limp body in that wreck, not to mention the others," Jacob said as he started to cry. "I have felt so bad. I know that you went through my cabin. I let you go because I knew that you deserved to know the truth."

"I remember that. I also remember that you also lied to me when I came to find my brother that night. Adam almost bled to death and you left him to die!" Jason replied in an angry tone. "I don't even know why I am even listening to you."

"Jason, I am prepared to pay for my doings. I just need your help to save Alyssa. You have to believe me," Jacob pleaded. " I need to save her."

"Since when did you start to care about her well-being. I read that you looked into the fellow eyes of a brother and felt the pain. You have no idea the pain that I feel that my brother is going to have to live with his limitations the rest of his life, not to mention Alyssa," Jason said, still very angry.

"Please Jason, I would love to discuss this with you later, but we need to get help!" Jacob said, trying to keep his composure.

"What is it to you if she dies? He is just finishing what you didn't when you left my baby brother, his best friend and Alyssa at the bottom of that mountain to die!" Jason said as he got up into Jacob's face.

"Because she is my sister and you have to help me save her for God's sake!" Jacob yelled back. "I will confess or do whatever it takes, but please help me save MY baby sister!"

At first, Jason looked at Jacob with a stunned expression. It was then the van's cell phone rang.

"Yeah, " Jason said as he answered the phone. It was his father. He quickly relayed what Jacob had said to his father. "You need to get help. We are on Sour Run Road."

"I sure will, the both of you stay there and I will be there immediately. I don't want you going alone. Have you found Adam?" Mr. Kramer said to his eldest son.

"No, I have to go and get him. Just get help and get up there as soon as you can," Jason said as he put the van into drive and gunned the accelerator.

"Jason, he is a dangerous man and he will stop at nothing at this point," Mr. Kramer replied, but his warning fell on deaf ears. Jason had already hung the phone up and was heading to the camp for his brother.

Meanwhile, Craig pulled his truck up to the outer rim of the camp. The darkness and thick pine trees hid the Ford truck well. He had to use four-wheel drive to go up the old road that led to the back of the camp, but they had made it. Chuck gave Adam one of his crutches so he could help steady himself. Chuck was to wait at the truck for the getaway, while Craig and Adam got Alyssa. Craig had to help Adam walk quite a bit because of his awkwardness, but the crutch and Adam's determination helped them reach the cabin that Craig had said that they were fixing up for Alyssa.

They crept very quietly in the shadows to the side of the cabin. Sure enough, Alyssa was in the cabin with Clara. Adam had to keep his emotions because Alyssa was in a bed reading with her wheelchair beside the bed. Then there was a knock at the door and the boys saw Clara go to answer the door. They heard a voice say '"Sure I will be right there." Then they saw Clara come into sight.

"Alyssa, I have to take your wheelchair to your uncle. He is going to have it fitted for cushions. He has to make some measurements," Clara said as she got the wheelchair and headed towards the door. "You will be okay?"

"Yes, go on ahead," Alyssa replied, still reading her book. That was the break Adam was waiting for. He turned to Craig and told him to stand watch while he went in to talk to Alyssa. Then he would signal Craig to come in and carry her out to the truck. Adam proceeded to go onto the cabin. He almost fell into Alyssa as he quickly made his way to her room.

"Adam! What are you doing here? Are you okay?" Alyssa said. She was very startled, but happy to see Adam.

"You have to trust me. You need to come with me," Adam said to his beloved girlfriend.

"Why? Have you lost your mind?" Alyssa said, looking at Adam with a very confused look.

"Your uncle is trying to kill you. He rigged the Cherokee to wreck that night," Adam said with a rushed voice. "I can explain later. I need you to trust me. You are in danger here."

"My uncle would not do that. What would he have to gain from that?" Alyssa said in a very distressed voice. She was becoming very upset.

"Yeah, why would I try to kill my beloved niece, Adam" A voice said behind Adam. Adam knew that voices anywhere. Chills went down his spine because it was the voice of Ashita Rawlins. He turned to face Ashita. Cyrus had Craig in a hold behind him. "Sorry Adam, they ambushed me," Craig said grimacing in pain from the hold that Cyrus had on him.

"Take him and tie him up. We will drown him in the river," Ashita said to Cyrus who immediately took Craig out of the cabin.

"You just had to stick your nose in again. Didn't the accident get through that thick skull of yours?" Ashita said as he crept close to Adam, who was now standing in front of Alyssa. He was acting as a human shield.

"Uncle, what is going on? I don't understand," Alyssa cried.

"You don't need to my child. I am the Messiah and I will fulfill this prophecy no matter what," Ashita said as he raised the staff in his arm and brought it down onto Adam's head. "Maybe this will sink the message into your brain."

Adam was not able to move fast enough to deflect or avoid the blow of the hard stick. He tried to keep his senses as he felt himself fall to the floor, but darkness soon blurred his vision and thought. He could hear Alyssa screaming in terror. "It will be painless," he heard Ashita respond. He heard the striking of a match and Ashita's footstep's go into the other room. He felt the heat of the flames on his face, even from the other room. It woke him up. He tried to get up and get to Alyssa, but he was having a hard time getting up.

Alyssa was screaming, "Get up Adam! Save yourself! Adam!" She then rolled herself off of the bed and crawled to Adam's side. Adam had just regained his senses when Ashita appeared in the doorway of the room. "Don't you ever die?" he said, noticing Adam coming too. He came over and grabbed Adam by the shoulders and banged his head repeatedly on the floor. Alyssa tried to fight him off, but he just slapped her away.

The last memory that Adam could recall before the darkness overcome him was that of flames in the doorway of the room, Alyssa's agonizing screams for help and the cold cruel laughter of Ashita Rawlins.
