Craig was being hauled to another area of
the camp when he heard Alyssa's screams and an another unusual sound. He
spun Cyrus around to see the horrible sight of the cabin igniting into
flames. He knew that he had to get away from Cyrus to help Adam and
Alyssa. He gained his footing and gained strength from within himself.
Cyrus was too busy laughing that he did not realize that Craig had got
into position to flip him over his back. Cyrus's body landed with a thud
on the hard ground. Craig was going to finish him off when he heard the
voices of the other followers that had come to see what was going on.
They were rushing to get into the house and trying to start a water
brigade to help put the fire out, but the fire raged out of control.
Craig started to run as fast as he could to help his friends. He heard a
voice behind him, grunt and say with a cold laugh, "You can't save them,
that house is doused with lighter fluid. They are already dead, just like
you will be when I get my hands on you." I t was Cyrus, who was still
struggling to get up. That didn't stop Craig. He was prepared to go in
that house to get Adam, even if it cost him his life. He was to protect
Adam and that was exactly what he was going to do. The other church
people were trying to get near the house, but the intense heat of the
flames held them back. One follower noticed Craig and grabbed him. "Stay
here, we are trying to get in there. You will get yourself killed."
But Craig fought him, but the man had two other boys hold him too. They were trying to calm him down when they heard another roar behind them coming from down the road. Craig recognized the van the minute it came in to view. He saw Jason and Jacob jump out of the van. Jacob ran to join the other followers running the water brigade. Jason spotted Craig and ran directly to him. "Where is Adam?" Jason yelled at Craig as he stopped him. "Where is he!" "They are both in the house. I tried to get to them, but the big brut over there held me back," Jason said, turning towards Cyrus. But Cyrus was already running for the woods. "I will try to stop him." "No, not alone. We need to help Adam. We need to get them out of there," Jason said, even though he really wanted to get Cyrus and break his neck himself. But he knew that it was more important to deal with the fire. "Jason, it has been too long," Craig said, painfully to his best friend. 'They could not be alive." "No! I am going to save them," Jason said, his voice cracking. "I will die trying." With that statement, Jason took off running towards the fire. Craig could not catch him so he shouted out to the followers to stop him. He could hear sirens echoing through the valley. At least help was on its way. As Jason approached the fire, Jacob stopped him. "I am not going to let you kill yourself. We were too late, no one has seen or heard them. Ashita must have set fire to all of the exits." "Get out of my way or I will drag you with me. My brother is in there!" Jason said with fury. He fought Jacob with every step and breath that he had in him. "My sister was in there. It is bad enough that I have to live with their deaths on my shoulder, but I will not allow you to loose you life as well. It would be too devastating to your parents." Jacob pleaded. "We are trying to gain an entrance right now." But Jason continued to fight Jacob. It was almost like his adrenaline was kicking in and he was dragging both boys towards the fire. The heat was burning his face, but that did not stop him. He felt other hands start to grab him, but he still tried to push forward. Adam was in there somewhere and he was going to find him. Suddenly though, a force picked Jason up and flung him in the air backwards. The force knocked Jacob and two of the followers that were holding Jason back as well. Jason tried to regain his senses, but the blast had knocked the breathe out of him. He then glanced in horror back at what was left of the cabin. The roof had totally collapsed and pieces of the house were blown away from the original structure. The other people were trying to put out those separate fires to keep it from spreading to the other structures and the forest. He felt hands grab him around his shoulders. It was his best friend Craig. He had tears in his eyes. Jason knew then that all chances of saving his brother were gone. His brother had burned to death and seeing the fire in front of his face was like looking at a coffin. He had tried to remain strong, but he could not hold his emotions anymore. He began to tremble and broke down in his friend's arms.
All this time though, Alyssa was fighting for their lives. She kept smacking Adam trying to wake him up. She even tried to drag Adam behind her, but she was just not strong enough to pull his weight. Feeling helpless, she cradled Adam in her arms and held him. She quietly rocked him while saying the prayer of Psalms; "The Lord is my Shepherd". Alyssa felt the heat of the flames as she said the prayer, but she had made up her mind that she would not be afraid. Around her the fire raged, all of the doors and windows were blocked with the walls of fire. The more scared she became, the harder she hugged Adam to her chest. "Adam, I am so sorry that I got you into this mess. I knew he was crazy, but I never thought he would hurt anyone," She said in his ears. "I thought he loved me. Now I face the same fate of my parents." Alyssa looked around her again for a shimmer of hope, but the same shearing heat and bright flames danced around her. Feeling that the end was near, she leaned over and kissed Adam on his soft lips. "I am so sorry. I wanted you to know that I love you. I LOVE YOU ADAM KRAMER!" she shouted, tears streaming down her face. She kept repeating the same phrase as she kept rocking him. Alyssa wanted the last thing for Adam to hear before they both died was the voice of true love. She was holding him so hard that she did not even notice him start to stir. Adam heard Alyssa's voice and felt the warmth of her arms holding him. He was desperately trying to get himself together. Then he was able to open his eyes. Around him the fire raged, but he was not afraid. He slowly started to move around and sat up. Alyssa was speechless, but grateful. "Adam! Go! Save yourself!" she screamed at him to be heard about the flames. "Leave me, just remember that I love you, Adam Kramer!" "I love you too Alyssa," Adam said as he leaned over and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek. "I am not leaving without you, even if I have to die with you." He did not know how he was going to do it, but he gathered his thoughts and strength. He reached over and grabbed a hold of Alyssa and held her in his arms. Adam did not know where his sudden strength was coming from, but he was determined to get Alyssa out of that house. Ashita was not going to win this one. He held her tight to his chest and took a deep breath. He remembered seeing firewalkers at the local festival in town walk across hot coals. They had said it was a mental thing, so Adam concentrated too a deep breath and walked through the doorway of flames that led to the living room area. He glanced around and there was fire all around him. Trying to decide which way to go, he studied his chances at every angle. It was then that he noticed a possible chance by going out the backdoor through the kitchen. He crossed through some flames to the kitchen. Alyssa spotted a bucket of water and pointed Adam to it. "Pour it on us so maybe we can get through the flames." The backdoor was nothing but a wall of fire so Adam sat her down and poured the bucket over both of them. He tried to get more water from the faucet, but the metal knobs were too hot. He reached down and cradled Alyssa in his arms. "Are you ready?" He said looking down at her. She nodded and held him tight in her arms. Adam then walked straight into the hot flames and through the backdoor. But instead of feeling the coolness of the night air that he longed for, he felt himself getting picked up and being tossed through the air like a rag doll. A deafening sound was heard behind him and the force of hitting the ground caused his to loose his grip on Alyssa. He struggled to clear his head, but this time his body ached and just would not move. Adam could not think or feel anything around him. He just was barely to whisper the words; "I love you Alyssa. I love you Jason, Mom and Dad. I am sorry I failed you all." He did not know if anyone heard him, or if anyone was still around. Adam was relieved though to know that those would be his last words. He only hoped that someone had heard them. |
