It was very dark and still when Chuck began
to open his eyes. He was almost afraid to open his eyes the rest of the
way fearing what he would see. Instead of white clouds or flames of fire,
he saw the roof of the Cherokee resting on the tops of the seats and
pinning him to the backseat. His door had broken off during the accident.
He strained to remember what exactly happened and how long it had been,
but the only thing he could remember was the feeling of the car rolling
down the side of the mountain so many times that he lost count. He tried
to move, but encountered shards of glass from where every window had
busted open. He was about to call out for Adam and Alyssa when he heard a
car approach and stop at the top of the ravine. Chuck thought about
yelling, but refrained until he saw who the strangers were first. Jason
and Adam had taught him to be cautious in situations like this. He
decided to close his eyes and wait to see the strangers.
Two shadows appeared by the vehicle. They peered in at Chuck, who remained motionless and then went to the front of the vehicle. "Well, that is taken care of," one voice said. "He will be very happy to hear of this news." "I just don't understand why we could not get out of this bind some other way," another voice replied sadly. "This was the only way, so shut up! Let's go, our job is finished," the first voice said. " Are you sure that---," the second person stammered. "The two in the front are dead, I don't know about the one in the back. It doesn't really matter you know. It is the girl that we were after, the others just got in the way," the first voice replied without remorse. "It will just make it more believable." At that, Chuck heard two footsteps begin to walk back to the road. He gulped air into his lungs after holding his breath when the two strangers were checking out the car. Then he heard a set of footsteps return to the passenger side of the vehicle. "I am so sorry Alyssa, may you be in peace," the voice whispered before turning to go back up the step decline. Chuck waited until the car pulled away before he began to make his way out of the smashed sorts utility. He could tell that he was covered in blood and every part of his body ached, but he had to see if he could help Adam and Alyssa. After a lot of maneuvering, Chuck crawled out of the backseat and to Alyssa's seat. He reached out and felt for a pulse, fearing that the men were right. However, he felt a slight pulse. She was still in her seatbelt even though the Cherokee was on its top. The roof met the seat tops and she was leaning slightly out of the broken window. He tried to see Adam, but all he saw was Adam's hand sticking out from where the steering wheel was now. He crawled to the other side, but all he could see was Adam's shirt between the door and the roof of the vehicle. "Adam! Can you hear me?" he said, hoping to hear Adam's voice. However, all he heard was the still of the night and the wind whistling through the pines in the distance. Chuck tried to stand up, but a sharp pain shot up his side and he fell back to the ground in front of the wreckage. "Adam, don't do this to me!" Chuck got to the other side where Alyssa was still unconscious. He reached across her to feel Adam's hand. All he could feel was Adam's fingers and they were feeling cool. "Adam, if you hear me, move your fingers!" Chuck said as he grasped his fingers. But he felt no movement. At this point, Chuck was trying to regain his senses. He felt so helpless not knowing if Adam was even alive. He turned his attention to Alyssa again. She still had a faint pulse. Chuck knew that he needed to get help, but every time he tried to stand up, he fell back to the ground in agony. Chuck made it about 25 feet before he had to lay down and rest. He looked up at the clear sky and saw the moon. It must be after midnight. Then he looked up towards the road. It was a long way to the top, but he had to make it. Chuck tried to fight off the darkness, but it soon overcame him.
Meanwhile Jason had returned home from his date with Kara. He was looking forward to sitting down by his computer and checking his e-mails. He was waiting to hear from his friend in Greece and send Kara his usual nightly message. It was a little after midnight and Jason decided he would wait up for Adam to see how everything had gone at the party. He had to smile at the thought of his little brother having a girlfriend. He hoped that Adam realized how happy he was for him. Not paying attention to the time, Jason sent out his e-mails and slowly drifted off to sleep in his father's executive chair by the computer. He slept peacefully until he heard the sound of something ringing. He was half-awake when he realized it was the phone. Jason jumped up out of the chair and ran into the living room to answer the phone. It was Mrs. Cooper, Chuck's mother. "Please tell me that Chuck stayed over at your house," she said in a frantic voice. Sometimes Chuck stayed over at the Kramer's house, but he always let his parents know if he did. "Calm down, I am sure he did," Jason said, trying to read the clock on the VCR. "I will go and check." Jason made his way to the spare bedroom, but Chuck was not there. He headed down the hallway to his brother's bedroom, but no one was there. Jason looked at the time again, this time his eyes were able to focus. It was 3 in the morning. "Adam and Chuck are not here," Jason told Mrs. Cooper. "I am sure they just ran into a little car trouble or lost track of time. Adam is usually not this late." "Please have him call the minute that you see him," she replied, not seeming as sure as Jason. "I will," Jason answered. " I am going to go and check to see if they had car trouble along the road." Jason got the keys to the van and started down the roads that led to Alyssa's home. His brother was pretty good about keeping his curfew, but probably felt that it didn't matter as much since their parents were out of town for the weekend. The closer Jason got to the old church camp, the angrier he became figuring his brother had lost track of time. He was going to let Adam have it pretty good when he found him. Jason spotted the two guards and rolled his window down. The two figures that approached the van were Cyrus and Jacob. "Have you seen my brother and his friend Chuck?" Jason asked the guards. "They left with Alyssa around eight or nine tonight. Her uncle bought her a car and they went for a ride," Cyrus said. "We figured they were still out running around." "So they have not returned yet?" Jason said. "No, but they are young adults and it is not a school night. They are probably out partying somewhere," Cyrus replied without a worry. Jason didn't like to hear the lack of concern by a man that was supposed to protect Alyssa. Then he looked over at Jacob. Jacob would not look him in the eye or even speak a word. "Well, I will look around for them. If you see Adam or Chuck tell them to call me on the van's phone," Jason asked. He did not want to waste time in case Adam needed his help. "I sure will, have a good night," Cyrus replied walking back to the shack. Jason turned the van around and began to head down the road. He looked in his rearview mirror and noticed that Jacob still was watching his pull away. Jacob's head was down. This gave Jason an uneasy feeling, but he thought that maybe he was just worrying a little too much. The more he drove though, the more his anger turned to worry.
Chuck began to wake up again. He was trying to think of a way to get help when he remembered that Adam had a cellular phone. But would it work at the bottom of the ravine. He had to try so he crawled back to the twisted hunk of metal. He reached in past Alyssa and tried to feel for the phone. Chuck finally found the phone up next to Adam. When he pulled the phone out of the car, it was covered with blood. This horrified Chuck and made him more determined to get help. He dialed 911, but all he got was static. He tried his phone number and the Kramer's home phone, but the signal was just not strong enough. Then he decided he would try the van's phone. It was nothing but static too. He figured he would keep trying all of the numbers, hoping for a miracle. Jason was just rounding the bend when the van's phone rang. Jason immediately picked the phone up and said, "Adam!" Instead of a voice, he heard the sound of someone breathing fast. "Adam, is that you? Where are you?" Jason almost shouted into the phone. "Jason," a voice said in a weak voice. "Chuck? What is going on? Where are you?" Jason said as, he parked the van so he could concentrate on the phone call. "Jason, you have to help. We wrecked," Chuck replied, still with a weak voice. "Where are you at?" Jason said, trying not to panic. "We wrecked on Alyssa's road. We went over the side," Chuck said. "Please get help." "Is everyone alright?" Jason asked, allowing the van to move slightly forward. He was looking for signs of an accident. "Just get help," Chuck said before he blacked out again. Jason could not hear anything after that over the phone. He desperately searched the sides of the road for anything that might help him find them. He began down a steep slope when he saw skid marks swerving all over the road. Stopping the van, Jason grabbed a flashlight. He glanced through the pines on one side of the road, and then concentrated on the steep ravine on the other side. He walked along the side of the road and was about to turn back to the van when he spotted tire tracks leading off of the road. Pointing the light down into the ravine he spotted the reflection of something white. It was a license plate. Jason started to run down the steep decline until a vehicle was in full vision. After running back to the van to call 911, he grabbed the brothers' first aid kit and some blankets. When he reached the bottom, he found Chuck first. He was barely conscious and still grasping the cellular phone. "Chuck, are you all right?' Jason asked, putting the blanket around him. He listened for a response, but all he heard was Chuck beginning to whisper something. Jason leaned over to hear him better. "Stay here", Chuck pleaded as he whispered to Jason. He didn't want him to find Adam in the condition that he was in. He knew that Jason would be devastated if something had happened to Adam. "I will be back, I am going to check on the others," Jason reassured him. But all he heard was Chuck pleading with him to stay away from the car. Ignoring Chuck, Jason made his way over to where Alyssa was still seatbelted in the car. He felt for her pulse and was relieved to feel a slight heartbeat. "Alyssa is still alive," he said to Chuck. "Where is Adam was he with you?" Chuck just started to cry. "Is he in there somewhere?" Jason said, grabbing Chuck and looking him straight in the face. Chuck nodded his head. Jason ran back over to the wreckage. He peered into the seat area near Alyssa and spotted a set of fingers. He reached out to grab the fingers and they were cold. Jason felt his heart begin to pound and stared in horror at the sight. The roof had collapsed around his brother to the point that he could not even see his brother to see if he was conscious. He pleaded for Adam to move his fingers or make some kind of movement, but the fingers did not move. At this point, Jason put a blanket over Alyssa. He shouted his brother's name again, but there was no response. He went over and fell to his knees beside Chuck. Chuck was still barely able to focus and had tears streaming down his face. He looked up at Jason, who looked like he had seen a ghost. "He was driving," Chuck stammered. "Is he dead Jason? Please tell me he is fine. Is he? They said he was dead." "They?" Jason asked, but Chuck had already blacked out again. Jason wanted to understand what Chuck was saying, but he was having a hard time staying focused too. All he knew was that his baby brother was in that twisted metal and he could not help him. He heard the approaching sirens coming up the road. He knew that they would see the van and stop. He would use the flashlight to let them know where they were at in the ravine. Jason went over and held his brother's fingers. He could not believe that after all that they had been through that it would end this way. |
