It seemed like an eternity to Jason, but
the paramedics finally arrived at the scene. Jason helped the paramedics
down to the wreckage. He went over and sat down next to Chuck, who was
still crying. Jason just felt very numb. Everything was happening so fast
for him. One paramedic was helping Chuck, while the rest of the three
paramedics were over at the wreckage. He heard one of the medic's call
for the Jaws of Life, a machine used to help extricate trapped
individuals from motor vehicles. He offered to help, but the medics told
him to stay over by Chuck. It was just all a big nightmare to him and any
minute he was going to wake up. However, Chuck's quiet sobbing brought
him back to reality. More paramedics arrived and the fire department came
with the Jaws of Life. He noticed that the medics had Alyssa free from
the wreckage and had placed her on a backboard. Jason could not help but
feel anger towards her at this time. If it were not for her, his brother
would not be stuck in that metal contraption. He tried to fight these
feelings knowing that he was just angry and worried, but he could not
think straight knowing that his brother could be lying in that wreckage
dead.
"Jason! I came with Dad," he heard a voice call out behind him. He turned around and saw the familiar face of Craig. " I thought I could help. Where is Adam?" " He- he is-", Jason stammered, but he just could not say the words. For the first time, the lump in his throat felt bigger and he felt his eyes begin to water. He just hung his head down trying to regain his senses. "He is still in there," Chuck said, still visibly upset. The paramedic had placed him on a backboard and placed a splint on his leg. He could not turn his head because of the neck collar. "He was driving. Everything happened so fast. He tried to get it back, but he couldn't and we rolled over the side." "You mean there was something wrong with the car?" Craig asked. "What did it do?" "The steering went out and then the car stopped running and it just went everywhere. I knew we were in trouble when Adam told us to hang on," Chuck said, almost whispering. The pain was starting to take its toll again. "Jason, he tried his best, but it just wouldn't stop." "Chuck you said something about other people. What did you mean? " Jason asked, helping the medic to hold a bandage onto Chuck's forehead. " I don't know who they were, but ..." Chuck said, but he lost consciousness again. "We will be taking him to the trauma unit as soon as the lady is ready to move," the medic said to Jason and Craig. "What about my brother?" Jason asked. He knew the medic had walked over to the other group. He was almost afraid to hear the response. "They are getting ready to cut him out of the vehicle. He will probably be flown to the trauma unit if he is not already dead," the medic replied. "We have not had any response from him yet." Jason still could not believe what had happened. The medics quickly started to take Alyssa up the hill to the ambulance. Then they came over and picked up Chuck. He was still unconscious as they started up the hill. It was then that Jason thought about Chuck's parents and then his own. " I better at least call Chuck's parents," Jason said, but Craig held him back. "I have already called them. They are going to be waiting at St. Mary's Trauma unit. When I heard the call come over my Dad's radio as being one of the Kramer boys, I had to come and help. I knew that they were coming out here to that party. I also told Dad to send one of his volunteers up to the church grounds to get Alyssa's relatives, ' Craig said. "I would have called your parents, but I don't know where they are." "They are in San Diego. I have the number at home, but I remember the hotel. They are staying at the Waterside Inn," Jason said, staring at the medics trying to extricate his brother. "I guess they need to know so they can get up here." "Jason, Adam is going to be just fine. My father is over there with the Jaws. He will do everything he can," Craig said, looking Jason straight in the eyes. "I will go and have the dispatcher contact your parents. It is about 5 in the morning so I think we can catch them now so they can start on their way up here." As Craig made his way to the top of the ravine, Jason could hear the sound of the machine cutting through the metal. All he could do was pray that Adam was still alive. If he were it would be a miracle from the looks of the Cherokee. He felt his eyes start to water again. "Got it!" he heard Craig's father call out. All of a sudden, the medics gathered around the vehicle. Jason got up and ran over to the wreckage. He was trying to stay out of the way, but he wanted to know if his brother was alive. He was looking frantically around trying to catch a glimpse of anything when he spotted his brother's arm. The medics were removing him from the car and placing him carefully on a backboard. "Very slight pulse, pressure is dropping. We need to get going to save him. He is very unstable," One medic said, as two of the medics were preparing Adam to be moved up to the waiting ambulance. " We have the Life Flight on the way. It will land in the field below the mountain. Anyone here have ID or see any medical bracelets?" One medic called, not knowing who Jason was at the time. "He is my brother," Jason called out. " Can you ride with us? He is in very bad shape and any medical information you can add will help. We may need blood," the medic stated, still securing Adam. "Yes, how bad is it?" Jason asked, trying to catch a glimpse of his brother. " We know that he has some head trauma, but we do not know how much. The other patient had possible spinal trauma while your friend who was over there seemed to come out of it in better shape. Your brother's vitals are very unstable so we will be rushing him to the hospital. We normally don't allow anyone to ride in the helicopter, but we might need someone to make some major decisions so we would rather have you with us since your parents are unavailable. The more information we can fill out on the way, the better informed the hospital will be when we arrive there," the medic explained. "Plus your friend's Dad asked if you could stay with your brother. So you can thank him." "Thank you, I really appreciate that. I want to be there if something happens," Jason replied. "Can I go over by him for now?" "Very quickly, we are getting ready to go," the medic said, pointing to where Adam was on the backboard. Jason walked over to his brother. He was horrified at the sight at first. Dried blood was around his mouth and around his right ear. His body was lifeless and a tube had been placed down his throat to help him breathe. Jason grabbed his hand and whispered into his brother's ear. " I am here. You better hang in there," Jason stammered, trying to keep his senses. He knew that he should remain positive about his brother and he knew that head trauma victims could sometimes hear people around them. "I am going to stay right by you and you had better do the same. You can't break up our team. Everything is going to be fine, no matter what happens." At that point the paramedics came and started to carry Adam up to the road to the awaiting ambulance. Jason hurried ahead to get his wallet from the van and give Craig his keys. Craig had agreed to drive the van to the hospital for Jason so he could ride in the helicopter. He reached in to put the keys in the ignition when he saw the car phone's light blinking. He looked at the caller ID and noticed that it was a San Diego phone number. The phone call that he was not waiting on. Reluctantly he dialed the number to quickly let his parents know what was going on. They had not yet made it to the top of the hill with Adam so he had a minute. His mother answered the phone, sounding nearly frantic. "What is going on? Where's Adam?" she cried. It was hard for Jason to hear his mother sound that frantic. She was normally level headed and was used to receiving calls of this nature. "They are Life Flightiness him. I will be with him. Craig is going to drive the van for me to the hospital. Are you leaving? Jason said, trying not to worry her. " We are going to be on our way. Your father is taking care of the room expenses," Mrs. Kramer responded. "Is everyone else alright? Are you doing okay? Were you hurt?" "I wasn't in the car. Chuck is going to be fine, but I don't know about Alyssa. I have to go, they are going to be leaving anytime now," Jason said, noticing the paramedics clearing the top of the ravine. "Jason, please tell him that we love him and we will be there soon, " Mrs. Kramer cried again. "Please tell him that we love him." "I am going Mom. I promise I will. Just get up here," Jason replied. At that Jason hung the phone up, and ran over to the ambulance. He was about to get into the front seat when he heard a long beep and a huge commotion in the back of the ambulance. He jumped out of the front and ran around to the back. It was then that he heard the chilling words that went through him like a bolt of lightning. "We've lost him! Begin CPR!" along with the mixed medical words that made no sense to Jason. All that made sense was that his little brother was dying and all he could do was stand by and watch. He ran to be with his brother, but Craig grabbed him before he could get into the truck. Jason fought Craig's grip, but soon other hands were holding him back away from the squad. All he could manage to do was scream over and over at the top of his lungs," "Adam! Don't leave me! I need you! Don't let yourself die like this!" |
